Hi, all of my life I have been physically active. I try to work out at least three times a week. That is why I was very surprised when two weeks ago I started to feel intense back pain. I decided to see my physician. He referred me to an orthopedist who ordered a MRI scan to determine the cause of my back pain. The doctor spoted a spinal lesion. I don't remember that I have hurt my spine so this discovery was a surprise. I have to undergo some additional tests so that the doctor could make a final diagnosis. He says that he cannot say anything before these tests are done. Can you tell me what could have caused this spinal lesion? I am under a great stress because of this situation. Maybe I would be calmer if I know what my options are.

Hi, I am afraid that a spinal lesion that the doctor spotted on MRI scan cannot be a good sign. There are many conditions that can be manifested through spinal lesions. Because you said that the only symptom you experienced is back pain I can understand why the doctor ordered additional tests. Based on your symptom your spinal lesion could be caused by conditions that vary from cancer over tuberculosis to rheumatoid arthritis. And even though you don't remember that you hurt your spine, the possibility of some kind of trauma cannot be eliminated. You can see that there is a wide range of possible causes for spine lesion. I hope that this will help you to understand why your doctor didn’t want to discuss further steps before he makes a conclusive diagnosis. However, even though the conditions I have mentioned are serious, you should not think of the worst. Stay strong and think positive. I hope that everything will turn up all right in the end.
