I recently found out my ex had given me an STD, as of last Tuesday I was given an antibiotic and am no longer worried about that. I know that sometimes where there is one disease there may be many so I scheduled an appointment for a vaginal exam, pap smear and all. My question is, my partner and I engaged in anal intercourse and if I have a vaginal exam (std testing and all) would the possible disease reflect in the results? IE if he gave me chlamydia as well, anally, would I require a rectal exam as well? PS the encounter happened in January 2011 if that helps with understanding the development of anything...

Some women have signs or symptoms of infection which include a frothy, yellow-green vaginal discharge with a strong odor. The infection also may cause discomfort during intercourse and urination, as well as irritation and itching of the female genital area. In rare cases, lower abdominal pain can occur. Symptoms usually appear in women within 5 to 28 days of exposure.

Family doctor here. I think I understand your question. It would be possible to miss a gonorrhea or chlamydial infection on a routine urine screen or vaginal swab. I realize this is an old post...so hopefully you've got everything straightened out by now. In this case, I would recommend asking your doctor to do an additional swab. If you are worried about more than one of these bacteria, you may need serial blood testing (for HIV, HBV/HCV, sometimes for HSV) and/or serial visual examinations if the concern is for current HSV infection or condyloma caused by certain HPV viruses. HPV can cause cervical cancer and condyloma, but I believe that certain strains carry different concerns, though I haven't read an update on this recently. I was an Army doctor for 20 years and never saw a case of syphilis (though I admit that soldiers probably do not carry the same risk as seamen...sorry I had to do that) but there is a blood test for syphilis as well. I agree that if you had the rectal bacterial infection that you could experience the symptoms discussed by the other contributor below.
