I had a problem where I over stretched the steidocliedo mastoid muscle and ripped the ligament that connected it to the collar bone. This makes my shoulders uneven. And I have had neck issues on the back top right side of my neck for a while (but it has gotten worse since I bumped my head on my dorm room ceiling last semester when hanging photographs, it also pops since the bump) there is a tightness across the back of my neck, standing up completely straight sometimes helps. My ribs also pop like described before, its a popping between my ribs and the sternum, its been happening for a while now.

I have the same problem with my sternum "popping" when I move my arms and shoulders backwards... but mine was the result of improper weightlifting. I was trying to lift a large amount of weight while maxing out on bench one day and when I went to bounce the bar off of my chest it basically smashed my sternum and it hurt for about two weeks... now I have to constantly crack my sternum back into place. I'm still checking the internet for solutions to this problem and if I find any I will pass on the knowledge...

I've had this same problem.

Fortunately for me my doctor diagnosed it. Apparently what is happened is I had a small accident that pulled the rib from the sternum connecting cartilage tissue. As it grows back into the cartilage the nerves extend dendrites back into the cartilage. This is an incredibly painful process. When you pop your chest what you are doing is pulling the rib back out and killing the dendrites. This gives immediate relief but also has the side effect of halting and resetting the healing process.

Basically what I had to do was stop popping my chest and just let the nerve endings grow back. It took a very long time and because the popping gave such a huge immediate relief it was very hard to stop. I eventually got the willpower to stop doing it though and now my chest is back to normal. Every now and then I'll experience a really huge sneeze or something from allergies and I'll get an occasional pop but after all the mental prep stuff I went through to stop doing it in the first place I can now just let it heal and let things go back to normal.

I have this same exact problem. Mine is caused by the way I sleep. I've always slepped on my side in a slightly tucked position. I don't know why but for about the past six months I noticed that when I wake up. I have myself nearly balled up and my arms tucked into my chest, as if I were trying to keep warm. I have no pain until I start to get up out of bed and then bam the pain hits. My doctor said the best treatment for me is to be mindful of my posture throughout the day. Shoulders back, chest out, head up, and no slouching. It has helped alot. I'm almost back to normal, well normal for me anyway. :-)

I lift weights and my chest pops all the time. Not really discomfort though, but slight until I pop it. My personal trainer says its nitrogen escaping, and my chiropractor says its air, so same diff. I sleep curled up on my side, but am going to try to sleep more on my back, since my shoulders are together when I sleep. But maybe do some pushups or pullbacks(opposite of pushups). Bigger muscles solve pain problems. Trust me. TRUST ME!

I think the same thing may have happened to me, I was doing muscle ups (pull up over into a dip :P) and started pushing to be able to do it, all of a sudden I heard the highest pitch crack sound I've ever heard my body make and it immediately hurt. Ever since it's been hard to do everyday things, like... laugh or breathe deeply. I'm not an expert but I've taken anatomy classes, and the sternum (or ribs I guess) dislocating then popping back into place  seems to make sense to me, so I might goto the chiropractor and just RICE it up. (Rest Ice Compression Elevation) Though I'm not sure about the compression so much. Hope everybody feels better!!! :D

i've had this for years....more or less, i'm 30 now...boxing, martial arts, weight training, i've never expierienced any type of "pain" before...and to some avail no pain at all actually, just a pressure build up, a quick yawn stretch usually corrects any mis-alignment, (if thats what it is) and then back at it...My observations about the condition leads me to 1. Fully Agree with Jacob, and 2. This is def caused by incorrect posture, (i'm terrible for hunching while i use the computer, as i'm supposed to wear glasses but dont.) In another aspect i do have upper back and neck issues, curvature etc...i never attributed the chest popping to that though, its always been right after hunching it needs a poppin. So yea guys, try to work on your posture a lil and see if that helps...i may look into getting a back brace. The gentleman that described his sternum painful to the touch :o go to the doc man!!!!!

your right, you are. I would definitley go to the doc and have it looked at, it could be spinal related and, if so you want to get that diagnosed and treated asap. I've never had pain to any degree, just an overwhelming sensation 'feeling' that i need to "pop" my chest. So i do..and, I'm good. Any pain of anysort, definitley have it looked at by a physician.

Check out Tietze's Syndrome/costochondritis.  Not at all common, but it exists!
