I've always used such online forums to check what could be wrong with me using the symptoms and I have benefitted a lot from that. I've never contributed my experiences and I've know decided to give back to the community so that people who are suffering can get some ideas based on my experience.
I've been having this sternum cracking issue for the past 3 months. One thing I noticed was that I had this whenever my shoulders/ head close in to the sternum part for a prolonged period of time. Having a slightly hunched back with relaxed shoulders which moves slightly to the front closing into the sternum area, when my chin is close to my sternum part (tilting the head front can result in this) were the times when I had this sternum pain. Cracking made it look like the pain is relieved. But actually trying to crack makes it worse. So do not crack when you have such a pain. Just follow the below steps :
1. Consciously have a proper posture (during sitting, standing, walking) with your shoulder not slumping forward.
2. Consciously hold your head high.
Once you do this, the pain should go away slowly or at least reduce significantly in 30 -45 minutes maximum. Doing the above things won't harm you in anyway because they are the right postures for the human body and they also show you as a confident person unless you overdo it.
If doing the above doesn't help, it's better to go and see a doctor. If the above things work for you, then it is definitely a posture issue because of which you have the sternum pain. So you should try to be conscious of this thing and maintain the right posture for a long time (months) to get a permanent fix. Hope your pain gets relieved!!

I'm going to bump this thread up. I have medical insurance fortunately and have been seeing a doctor about it for a definite diagnosis. I have bookmarked this thread and will post the solution, I will try to get an actual diagnosis of the problem, and hopefully solution, instead of simply treatments for the pain.
I started to be able to "pop" my sternum 3 years ago. At first it was only something I did because I could, kind of like your knuckles. After a few months, I could feel a "pressure", not pain or anything, but it was relieved by "popping" the sternum. After another couple months it progressed to mild discomfort relieved by the maneuver. Months later it was a dull ache that would not go away unless popped. Then it was dull and sharp. Its currently a pain that is generally centralized at the center of the sternum, maybe slightly greater at the higher end of it. It also aches to the left and more so to the right on my ribcage around 2-3 inches away horizontally form the sternum. At this point it will come and go. 2-5 days of this and then maybe 1-3 days without major pain, although there is always a tenderness to the central part of the sternum.
*###Test Results Etc###*
Mri revealed inflammation and edema to the manubrium of the sternum. Possible degeneration or a "degenerative pattern" was noted. The MRI interpretation also stated that "This was most likely a result of blunt trauma to the sternum, with frank infection being less likely." I am CERTAIN no trauma was sustained. I have been referenced to chest surgeon for evaluation and will post results and updates as I receive them.

I am going to offer some tips due to I am able to encourage a "pop" and relieve some pain usually within the hour that my sternum won't pop.. yes it IS painful and verrry annoying because most times it pops without a hassle. .
So tip #1 try to become as relaxed as possible. Lay at a position that is most easiest to breathe. For me I favored laying on my side hugging a pillow to keep my chest some what open. Or while laying on my side i stretch out and open my chest to the ceiling.
Tip #2 is *stop trying to pop it for a while..* instead I massaged the muscles around my sternum. Take a pain reliever like asprin for swelling if pain has gotten too severe.
Tip #3 *try various stretches (with rest between each rep, remembering to breathe as easily and smoothly as possible)* do not attempt stretches that cause your body too much strain, try to go into the stretch as easy as possible (for you). Sometimes i have to do it quick, but after 5 minutes or so if i can't get it to pop, I rest about 10- 15 minutes then... try to reach across my back to touch my shoulder, then i tried to reach underneath my shoulder blade. I am not nearly flexible enough to accomplish this task but ... this last trick worked for me as complex as this was.. I did get my sternum to pop it was just the stretch/ movement.. In the right position/angle.
So Tip #5 *have patience with your body*
I also had water before i stretched, i don't know if it helped, but i encourage you to drink water as well.
After i pop my sternum i like to keep my chest open to prevent the muscles from cramping up again so i try to lay on my back for a while.
This is all I have for now.. i pray that this helps you. Take care.

But now, 3 years on, my chest plates seem to crack and the often feel tight. Sometimes, the tightness becomes quiet intense and it feels like someone has karate chopped me right in the chest. After this, it goes into a dull ache and eventually goes away until the next time it occurs. I just don't understand whats going on.
Does anyone have any ideas?
Thanks in advance

I had the same issue with my chest popping for years - it was so bad, that when I found the cure, I took the time to write it up here: ***this post is edited by moderator *** *** posting of web addresses is not allowed*** Please read our Terms of Use
