I actually had some heartburn tonight and think it might be because I ate soup and 1/2 bagel for lunch and then salmon and mashed potato for dinner today. I think my stomach is not be used to that much food in one day. Just a guess. My stomach must be really small right now. Also, my GI tract still not functioning normally.

FYI- Nexium and Prilosec are over the counter, so no prescription required. Interesting no one pushed that on you. Both my doctors wanted me to use.

I have the apple cider vinegar (ACV), DGL, and Slippery Elm supplements., but haven't used them. I wanted them on hand just in case. I even got the raw honey to use with the ACV drink. Ha!

The only supplements I take are the digestive enzymes and probiotics. Let me know how the ACV lemonade works for you.

This entire experience has been surreal.

Dear Lov4k9s,
That's an interesting theory about the heartburn - I hadn't thought of that! What's DGL again? LOL!!! I'm so grateful to have you in my corner!

I think it's a really good sign that we are able to start to eat more normal food. To be honest, I'm am starting to think that this is just a really weird stomach flu, and we will eventually get over it.

My husband has now been feeling crappy for a solid week. He says he is just really exhausted all the time (no other prominent symptoms). He normally swims every day and has been unable to do any exercise at all. I can't imagine that this is a different thing that we have - maybe just a different version. My sister (lives in DC) however, is having our symptoms coming and going - less severe (she is going to work etc.) but with the nausea, diarrhea, light headed etc. (BTW: both have reported that it is much worse in the morning!!!) How could this be a coincidence?

I am curious to ask the Gastroenterologist if some people are more susceptible to getting, and not getting rid of stomach viruses - and why. I have to say that I have suffered my whole life from stomach bugs - I get every one that goes around and in the past two years, have had relapsing and prolonged bugs. This will be the worst one yet, however!!!! Assuming that is what this is.

Let me know how you are today, ok? Are you finding that the brain fog has lifted a bit? I am definitely more functional than last week. Except for the heartburn, anxiety, etc. which has not abated at all.

Yesterday was a rough day, but this morning seems better.

My remaining symptoms have dropped several levels in intensity compared to last week:

*No appetite, but when I force myself to eat I can eat smaller portions of my normal servings.

*Minimal to no suffering after eating. Although I did have slight heartburn last night.

*Minimal to no nausea.

*My GI tract is still out of whack. Infrequent BM's.

*I still don't feel "sleepy" when I go to bed or rested when I wake up. But I am able to fall asleep, just can't stay asleep

*I woke at 2am and slept on and off the remainder of the night.

When I read my list I can see that things have drastically improved, but because I still feel like c**p and out of sorts it is hard to appreciate the improvements. I want to feel like "me" again.

Sorry to hear about your husband. I'm curious to know if he has been supportive of you during this time.

I rarely get the stomach bug. In fact, I can't remember the last time I had it. I had food poisoning a couple of years ago, but that lasted 1 day and then I was back to normal the next day.

While the anxiety is now minimal to nonexistent, I've NEVER experienced the anxiety before with any illness. In the beginning it was generalized and intense. When you got the stomach bug in past, did your symptoms include anxiety?

The zombie brain fog has downgraded (thank goodness), but I still feel out of sorts and dull. I don't feel depressed or sad, but I do feel dull and lacking motivation & joy. You said it best yesterday that it feels like the stomach bug is draining the life out of you. I've never experienced this while being sick before. But then again, I've never been sick like this before. Did you experience this in the past or this go around with the stomach bug?

Oops, forgot to answer some of your questions:

*DGL - deglycyrrhizinated form of licorice. The DGL is a better form of the licorice root.

* I too find it strange that mornings are the worst for everyone, even for Wisconsin.

Dear Lov4k9's,
Just having some licorice tea now!!! lol!!

wow, that's interesting that you are not a stomach bug 'frequent flyer' - god, I wish I could say that!!! Even though I am sick with stomach bugs a lot - this thing is really weird.
I've never experienced anything like this, but I have gotten sick with one thing and then had a cascade effect of getting sick with something else. Once I got strep throat and then got shingles!

Nausea can make me anxious and I do get anxious when I am sick in general because I get scared and think I'll never get better. But, I tend to get anxious at the drop of a hat. That being said - I don't get anxious for no reason! This feature of waking up anxious is bizarre!! Plus, it's not just anxious - there is a "dread" component to it.
Last night I woke up several times and then very early, feeling anxious. I made myself stay in bed and when I finally got up, I wasn't as anxious.

Today has been much better for me so far - much less heart burn and acid reflux feeling. Although, I haven't tried to go out yet today. I am back to eating fruits and vegetables - cooked (cautiously). One thing I have discovered is that I do better if I don't eat too much at a sitting.

My husband has been pretty patient, but yeah, it must get old to hear about this every day. Also, I have to edit and monitor my complaints a bit because getting him engaged doesn't usually make things better.

One thing I have been feeling so alarmed and anxious about is that it has seemed as if it wasn't changing day to day! What kind of illness, other than a chronic condition, doesn't change?? But,
like you just said, I think we've make terrific progress - just hard to see when you've been sick for so long. I feel much better than I did last Friday, in fact - but I still don't feel close to completely better. Maybe we need to adjust our expectations and thinking about this? If we feel better this week than last, maybe next week will be almost the end!!!

Are you able to do any work or go out/about? I'm an artist and I also do a variety of other odd jobs - don't know what I would have done if I had to show up at an office!!! The bad thing is, if I'm not doing any of my jobs, I don't make any money - so there's that!
Let's stay on the healing path my friend, ok??

This made me laugh, because it is so true for me too! Ha! "I have to edit and monitor my complaints a bit because getting him engaged doesn't usually make things better."

I was having a relatively mild morning and decided to try an be "normal' and have a cup of coffee with oatmeal and eat a 1/2 sandwich at lunch. Big mistake...huge anxiety surge! I'm not sure if it was triggered by the coffee or my body reacting to the sandwich or the combo. No more coffee for me till I'm fully recovered.

Did you try the ACV drink?

Unfortunately, I am only able to get myself out of the house if I have a doctor appointment for myself or vet appointment for one of my furry kiddos. I've had to quit tennis for now too. The brain drain is real and I don't want to leave the house because I can't even fake being normal.

I am an independent contractor and work from home. Unfortunately, I have not been able to work. I will sit at my desk for hours and not get anything accomplished. While the heavy head/zombie brain fog is not as intense as last week, I still cannot focus. My IQ seems to have dropped a few points too, ugh! Normally I'm is a multi-tasking, workaholic.

What about you? Do you desire getting out and about? Are you able to work on your projects at all?

Hi Lov4k9s!
LOL!!! YOU make me laugh!!! God, I'm glad you are out there!! (sorry you are sick, of course!)
My IQ has definitely been diminished!!!! And I can't deal with anything complicated. I decided to start on my taxes since I'm home sick - I'm fed up with being out of commission and HATE being sick. It's pretty comical actually - I'm getting really confused and having to add things up 3 or more times (each time I get a different number!)....Oy boy!

In my previous post, I was going to say more about husbands but this is an open forum - LOL!!!!!

I know what you mean about not being able to fake normal - I have been turning down social invitations as well and I'm beginning to think my friends think I'm nuts...

Ugh, this afternoon the heart burn came back after lunch - now in pain, and in spite of the licorice tea....Also, my temp might be up slightly again - ahhhhh!!!!
I have been making short forays into the world the past few days. I had a cat sitting job for 2.5 days and I had to go there 2x day. My mother screamed at me and told me not to do it but I had to do something to feel like a person again. Sometimes it does feel good to walk a few blocks and get some fresh air.

I started coffee in the mornings again a few days ago because I was having horrific headaches from caffeine withdrawl. Actually, I haven't found the coffee to make me worse - except maybe a bit shakier - that caffeine shake. I have to be vommiting to not have coffee, though - anything less than that and I'm drinking it. It does help my focus and mood. Do you think it is the oatmeal? Sometimes, I find that difficult - toast with a bit of cheese can sometimes be better for breakfast with an iffy stomach. Don't give up on the coffee, if you are suffering - I also water it down a bit with milk and water so it's not too strong. Did you get the anxiety surge after the sandwich or after breakfast? I can't believe how tricky this thing is!!!!!
Keep me posted at every turn,

Oh forgot...I haven't tried the ACV drink yet - my sister says it's like a hot lemonade....honestly, I almost didn't buy it - it's like Windex in My Big Fat Greek Wedding. Maybe I'll try tonight.

I tried coffee last week and had similar result, so I'm thinking the coffee may indeed be the culprit.

I'm wondering if the coffee is causing your heartburn. You mentioned that you just restarted the coffee a few days ago and that is about the time you started having heartburn. I hope that isn't the case, but wanted to point it out in case lessening your coffee intake helps your heartburn.

In an earlier post you discussed the anxious dread feeling when waking. I had that for at least two weeks and I haven't had that in a while, so I'm hoping this gives you hope that you will waken with no adrenaline surges soon.

In an attempt to be more positive, I'm trying to be more patient with the healing process. I had an expectation of being fully recovered by now and got upset when that didn't happen. I'm going to read some Buddha or something to help me cope with this.

How are you today?

Hi Lov4k9s!
Hey, how are you today?? Today was a bit better for me as far as the heart burn goes. I did have a bad night again last night. Weird dreams, kept waking up at odd hours etc. AHHHH!!!!!! Not looking forward to bed time tonight....I'll remain hopeful....

I was able to eat pretty normally today. I haven't tried the ACV yet...looked it up more thoroughly and discovered that it can errode tooth enamel - WTF? We can't have that, right???

Meditation might be a good strategy for staying present in the moment - I have done it with some success. It just takes practice and patience....not in abundant supply right now.

I'm wondering if wheat might be part of my heart burn. Since I've been sick, I've been eating a lot more bread and wheat products than I normally do. I was diagnosed with a wheat and egg white allergy many years ago so I try to be mindful of my diet. Also, I have been making scrambled eggs a lot in the past few weeks. Maybe it has nothing to do with it? Hard to say. This thing see-saws back and forth so very unpredictable.

I do think it is safe to say that we are on a healing trend now, right? Overall, when I look back at last weekend, I can't believe how much better I am doing. I was extremely nauseous, bad headache, couldn't eat, terrible anxiety. Wow!!!

Let me know how you are doing

That is fantastic news!! I have my fingers crossed that mine comes back negative too.

I'm still struggling with the sleep issues, lack of appetite and GI upset after eating. My GI tract seems to be completely out of whack with the constant gurgling and irregular bm's. At no time in the day do I feel good and it is affecting my quality of life.

Sorry to be such a bummer in the face of your good news. I just need to catch a break...either a good night's sleep or a normal day of eating. I'm really trying to maintain a positive attitude, but I haven't seen any improvement this past week. I may just try the ACV tonic and drink with a straw to avoid contact with the teeth.

Sounds like you are really on your way to normalcy and I am happy for you. Do you feel better....no longer feeling ill? How was your sleep last night? Please provide as many deets as you feel comfortable, reading your posts are a nice distraction for me.

Hi Lov4k9s! Good to hear from you! AWWW !!! Your posts are the bright spot of my days - so please stay in touch with me too!!!!
Since you ask....lol!!!!.....
Actually, I have pretty bad heart burn again this morning after breakfast. I do think it is the coffee! Can you tolerate tea, or does that upset your stomach also? I broke down and chewed a Tums...that helps a bit. I think it is fine to take the acid reducers on a short term basis, if it helps. I am so f*****g ready to be a normal person again, I could scream!!!!!

The doctor I saw at the urgent care place (they did the H Pylori test), just told me this morning that she thinks I have the stomach flu. She said that tons of people are coming in with it.
I bet that your H Pylori test will be negative also. I really think that once the GI track gets out of whack, it takes a long time to reset itself (at least for me!). I am still having issues as well - not 100% "well" by any stretch. BMs not normal yet either so don't despair - you are not alone.

Other lingering symptoms for me are the exhaustion during the day, and I've got the stomach gently bubbling up into my throat a bit like the contents are carbonated - WTF???

Are you able to lie down a few times during the day? Does that help?

Last night was a bit unsettled - not as bad as the night before. I have started taking a probiotic right before bed and that REALLY helps with sleep! Are you doing that? I have tried Melatonin 10mg and that can help a bit but I seem to have gotten used to it so it doesn't really work anymore.

What kind of foods are you able to tolerate? Are you on the BRAT diet? I can't stand that diet!!!
And I get really depressed when I can't eat fruits and veges. I am tying to control myself but it's hard.

The few things that have really improved for me are:
-no fever
-less anxiety upon waking
-less shaky
-no nausea
-less diarrhea
-more normal food - but not my usual fare!

Thanks so much for writing. I'm really low today and reading your posts gives me a quick pick me up.

I've been having heartburn too. It is not intense, but it is unsettling. Like....come on....really!? This now, too!? It could be that I've always had it, but other symptoms were more prevalent and I didn't notice until those subsided. Otherwise, this is a new development that may have been triggered by trying coffee again. Who knows.

I don't think this could still be stomach flu for me. Either I had stomach flu and it f'd up my GI tract and I'm just in healing mode or I have something else entirely. I want to believe the former, but why is it taking so long?

I do take breaks and lay down and try to distract myself with the internet or videos, but I cannot nap. Something happened when I got sick that really hampered my ability to sleep.

I've been taking probiotics from the beginning and it has not helped me sleep at all, unfortunately.

I was on the BRAT diet for two weeks, but off it now for two weeks. I try to eat low acid foods during the day and Salmon for dinner. Right now it seems like my stomach is not happy with any foods. I'm still not eating much.

Really sounds like you will be back to normal any day now. I hope the same for me soon. Even with all of the improvements, I still feel too sick to function. I have push myself to get through any task because I feel so terrible. I've been sick before and have been able to function just fine. This thing is a different beast because the discomfort is in the forefront and all encompassing. Sounds melodramatic, but it is true for me. I had that one great window of feeling almost normal for one afternoon, but I haven't had that since.

How is your ability to focus? Are you less overwhelmed now? Also, do you feel ready to get out in the world and socialize now that you are feeling better?
