Two months now...really bad stomach cramps...chills...crazy gas...body aches. I thought it was because I started eating more fiber in my diet , so I have started taking stomach enzymes, that sorta help. Just when I think I am feeling better...mild stomach and gas...but not completely gone..I get hit with the fluy sick feeling and unbelievable cramps. Heartburn today..first time for that!! What the heck!!!
Had celiac tests,stool,blood ..etc etc.

I'm an American living in Brazil and I have been suffering from this same stomach flu for 2 months now. Started feeling symptoms around Dec 1, 2010, and still today no relief. My husband had it for 2 days then it went away. Still my daughter shows no signs. I have been running to the bathroom upwards of 20 to 30 times per day, with very bad diarrhea, cramps, blood in the stools from the internal hemorrhoids I developed became of the constant bathroom runs & general upset stomach or nausea. Tests came back normal, only that I have a higher amount of white blood cells, which my Dr said I most fighting an infection. Ive lost around 5 pounds. I'm on my second round of antibiotics which I finish tomorrow and still no relief from the constant bathroom runs. This flu has been going around our area, and I know many people who have this, and lost weight, one friend has had it one for month so far. I met an Australian who had this flu in Australia for 6 months before finally recovering.

Well after reading these posts I don't feel so alone. I wish someone could come up with an answer. In mid December both my husband and I got the stomach flu. We rarely get sick but figured it was probably our turn. A week or so later my 17 year old daughter got the stomach flu. Then right after Christmas she got the stomach flu again. Again, kind of strange since she's rarely sick either.

Both our grandsons (18 months and 2 years) live with us. We put them in daycare the beginning of January and they both got the flu virus. Not uncommon after starting daycare. I got it too and was down for almost a week. One of the grandsons was taken to the ER for IV fluids.

I haven't had a normal BM since the last bout of sickness. I just assumed it was my body taking it's time getting better. So now this week I've had severe stomach pain and abdominal pain that has turned into diarrhea. I'm so tired of being sick and taking care of sick people I'm actually starting to think I'm getting depressed. And the last thing I want to do is take antidepressant meds if I don't need them.

As mentioned earlier I have been suffering with similar symptoms to those mentioned above by others and have only just finally received an answer.... I finally found a doctor who tested me for a parasite called Blastocystis Hominis (which is tested through stool samples taken over a three day period) and received back positive results for having it.
This parasite is a nasty one and has mixed reviews on whether or not it can even be treated- with metronidazole (an anti-biotic) being the first option.
There is a lot of information about this bug on the internet, try typing in Blastocystis Hominis and ask your doctor to be tested for it.... It is interesting to note that in most cases this bug is confused with IBS and that some IBS treatments assist in relieving the symptoms but do not remove the bug itself.
Good luck everyone!!!

Since posting a while back, my family has recovered. It took a good two months for everyone to completely return to normal. I hear it's coming back around though.

This just brings to mind what virus specialists have been talking about for the past few years with the onset of H1N1, Avian, SARS and other acute viral infections. I'm not an expert, but I remember some health professionals warning that these bugs (bacteria and viruses) that exist have the ability to not only mutate, but to become resistant to antibiotics as well. I think we're beginning to see what these folks were referring to as 'superbugs'. What used to be a stomach or gastro-flu a few years ago would last a few days. Now people are getting these bugs for weeks on end, or in recurring cycles. Its as if the virus has found a way to defeat our immune system and our antibodies. So, we catch the same bug over and over again. On February 28, I went to an emergency clinic at a local hospital because I wasn't feeling well. Since that night I have had bouts with diarrhea that have come and gone. I have had blood tests and Xrays done and everything seems normal, except for the runs. Many people in my area have also had bouts of diarrhea that have been going on since mid winter. It seems to have been going around. That's my best guess anyways.

Could be post viral gastroparesis... When the muscles of the stomach don't work as well due to damage to the muscles or nerves of the stomach. Recovery time ranges from months to years. Its got me feeling pretty bummed out. My recommendation us that you not read too many internet horror stories.

Update:

I was diagnosed with "normal" colitis. Which is what I thought it was from the beginning. I had to get a colposcopy, which was not very fun, but they took a bio-psy. I cured it with the SCD. Specific Carbohydrate Diet, 24 hour yogurt, and watching my sugar intake. If you have colitis I would recommend researching the Specific Carbohydrate Diet. Its intense but relived my symptoms in like days.

How has this affected your eyes? Do they feel like they're burning? Has any one been experiencing dizziness and a pressure under their ribs, in their forehead and behind their eyes? I have been to the doctors, emergency rooms twice, urgent care and have had all the same tests mentioned in previous posts. I start to feel better and then it hits me out of nowhere again. I have been struggling with this for nearly three months. One of the weird symptoms is joint pain that comes and goes throughout my body. It started with my elbows, then my left leg, now my ribs. When I sit down, I feel a constant pressure beneath my left rib. It's very frustrating, to say the least. I feel like I'm afraid to make any plans because I don't know when it's going to suddenly flair up again.

I have had these symptoms since Thanksgiving. Very tired with nausea, bloating, gas. Vomiting and diarrhea for first couple of days. Now I have all the rest, including the sternal knot. I also have extreme fatigue and so I'm starting to think that it's lyme-related. Going to an ID specialist on Friday for tests. Will let you all know what I learn. Lina

I got sick with this virus last Friday (it is now the following Thursday) and still I am not fully recovered. The first 48 hours were pure hell, nothing but vomiting and writhing in agony in between, no diarrhea though, so I guess I am thankful for that, vomiting pretty much subsided after those first 2 days, but still whenever I eat just a bite too much I am forced to breath heavily through my nose to stop the rising tide of barfing (if you are trying to hold food down and feel a barf coming on, you can breath very heavily through your nose back and forth to counteract the vomitting, just be careful you don't hyperventilate yourself. But now on day 7 my nausea is pretty much gone (thank god!!) but still whenever I eat I have to take one small bite then wait 5-10 minutes before my stomach stops bubbling and grumbling and the food finally settles, so needless to say it takes me about an hour to finish a 200 calorie can of soup, so I feel very weak and undernourished and have lost about 5-10lbs so far. It really sucks too because when I finally finish that long ass bowl of soup and attempt to lay down for a bit, I end up waking up within an hour like clockwork with intense hunger pangs since there is no more food in my stomach and my body is in obvious need of food and nutrients, it's very horrible to feel intense biting hungar pangs only to eat a couple bites and have an upset, rumbly and gaseous stomach, then have to repeat the process every 5 minutes to get at least a bit of food in me, and then only to get violently hungry again in an hour, I guess it is a good sign that I am at least getting hungry and my body is accepting some food at least (that is more than I would have been able to say 2 days ago), but it is almost getting to the point where I feel like I will have to live like this forever, will it ever stop?!

Also, one of the only home remedies that seemed to help me along when I had intense nausea, was to turn the shower on really warm and then lay down in the tub and let the hot water massage my abdomin, highly recommend this for anyone going through this same hell, also just laying down in a warm bath seems to get my mind off of my symptoms, hope this helps!

Hey everyone:) Was just wondering if the doctors prescribed any nausea meds for you guys. It helps tremendously because it keeps you from throwing up. I can't help you with the diarrhea though.
Also, I noticed that most of you were getting tested for a virus and all your tests came out normal. Have you ever tested for parasites? Or gotten a different opinion from a different Dr.? Oh and make sure you aren't a hypochondriac either. I kinda am which is why I'm on this thread at the moment. (Hehe)
I'm sorry for what you all are going through. I pray that you will all be healed and move on with happy lives. God bless:)
