Well he is really young to be drinking. I think he has become allergic to alcohol, and If you ask me that is a good thing. I don't drink that offten, and when I do I just take one or two beers. But when I get drunk (that happens only once a year the most) I have a heavy hangover. That hangover is the reason why I don't drink. I read that it is not enough anymore to just sleep it of. They say that there is a lack of judgment and concentration involved next day.

I have exactly the same problem. I used to be able to drink more than anyone and get a 1 day hangover but now i can drink 2 glasses of wine and im i'll for 3 days. 1st day is like a normal hangover and the 2nd and 3rd day im either physically sick or just feel really weak and tired like i could pass out regardless of how much sleep, food and drink I have. this has only been happening to me for about 5 months now but its every time. There must be some explanation for it. I thought I may have become allergic to it but never heard of that. Has anyway found out whats wrong with them?
I used to be the life and soul of a party and would always be last one to leave but now i dread socialising where drink is involved because I either cant drink or do and feel so poorly for least 3 days.

I have had the same problem! I used to be able to enjoy wine etc. But suddenly last June I got very ill after only 3 drinks.. I too thought it was the food. I had a few drinks again and was violently ill.. Just this past new year I had a few sips of champagne at midnight and again was so sick! I spoke with my Dr. about it and she said she had one other patient with the same problem but did not know the source. I recently have been having issues with my Gallbladder.. had an ultrasound today to see what is wrong with it. I read on a site a few days ago that Alcohol can cause you go have a Gallbladder attack.. which is Vomiting, Diarrhea, Chills, Racing Heart, etc.. Anyway if you notice any pain in your upper right abdomen get it checked out..!

Well, I'd say my story too, but You all covered it!! lol. The only thing I've figured is that I've just realized that I'm lactose Intolerant. I have been for years now (I jsut found out a month ago, but can remember symptoms back up towards the ending of highschool 11 years ago.) That's the only think I can think of thats been going on, hand and hand over the years. Lactose intolerance is getting worse, to the point of me recognizing it; to hangovers getting unrecoverable for 2-3 days (I would call in sick too). Pepcid ac seems to help a little, something you might be able to try. I've been actually searching for an alcohol that's lactose intolerant friendly to see if that help me. BUT unfortunatly nobody goes and puts that on their label! So, I've been googling and found this. If anyone hears anything, please respond so I can get an email sent to me!
Thanks and good luck in the fight to have a beer!! lol

Well I don't really have a solution and I haven't talked to doctors either but I wanted to relate and I think there are some common factors between all of us. We are all mostly women? The main problem being the nausea-like symptoms? Did we all have a 'phase' in the past of being able to drink like normal or party a lot? Usually, my getting sick doesn't begin until the next day but it seems to be happening earlier and earlier after a night-of-drinking (sometimes, I will get sick right after finishing my first drink)
I began drinking at 15 and had normal responses to alcohol until about age 20 (binge-drinking on weekends) now at 23 my reaction to alcohol is similar to someone getting food poisoning. I am half Chinese but I do not get flushed or experience the Asian Flush like my cousins, also my sisters can both drink normally without nausea like me. A normal night out would be once every 2 or 3 months, I will drink with my girlfriends (4 drinks) and then at 7am the nausea will wake me. I spend the entire next day in fetal position, getting up to throw up, returning to laying and sweating until about 5pm or early evening.
Solutions?
The only thing that I noticed is after I tried to drink more often (rather than once every few months) the dramatic, poison reaction slowly deteriorated. I graduated a few months ago and the last month of college I drank at least twice/week. Before this month I had not drank for 6 months but I really wanted to go out near graduation. Although 50% of the time I would have the poison reaction -- near the end of the month I was able to drink more and throw up less the next day (only 2 or 3 times). Also, after drinking and then smoking half a joint at the end of the night, I didn't end up throwing the next day at all (YAY!) but this was after slowly introducing more alcohol into my diet.
On New Years, I had one very weak rum + diet coke and spent the rest of the night throwing up. Every fifteen minutes I will get sick, but after I smoked a joint it stopped. I know its illegal and most people prefer to avoid marijuana, but it is the ONLY thing that has given me any sort of relief from the nausea, throwing up, and headaches. Other than that, I suggest trying to drink casually a bit more often - I can usually get away with one margarita at a restaurant at first. Then increase the amounts, 2 beers at dinner... and hopefully the effects will not be so harsh.
I feel really badly for all of you. Although I know it's healthy not to drink but I enjoy a few with girlfriends at Happy Hour, I don't think anyone can understand our frustration until they are repeatedly hugging a toilet after just trying to enjoy a Saturday night. Hope to hear some of the responses you got from your visits with doctors, I really should book an appointment but these internet results don't give me a lot of hope that the topic has even been researched.

For those of you still looking for an answer to this question. The same thing happened to me some time ago. I went to multiple doctors searching for an answer and did endless research on line looking for an answer. Turns out I have celiac disease and can not tolerate gluten. Beer definitely has a lot of gluten which was the culprit when I would drink. Additionally, many wines although gluten free, are aged in barrels that are lined with wheat paste, which would gluten gluten. Distilled alcohols/hard liquors should not contain gluten, as the gluten should be removed during the distillation process, but many celiacs in general just do not tolerate alcohol. I used to be able to drink plenty, and one day it just changed. I have attempted to drink gluten free alcoolic drinks since them, and I simply just can not tolerate them. It pretty much is a bummer, but life goes.

I am in the same situation, except my intolerance slowly built up. And instead of suffering a hangover, my body actually rejects the alcohol so it comes up after 20-30 minutes then am very unwell for the whole night, smell of alcohol or cigarettes triggers that off. which sucks. I've been to specialists and they say I have a similar condition in my liver to what alcoholics get (at the time I was 17 and only drank once a month). Even before o saw the specialist I hadn't drank for 6 months and the levels of enzymes in my liver were still way to high. The specialist was abit of a prick so I didn't go back to him. I am now 18 and drank for the first time in 10 months last night. All was going great until I fell ill and had to go home cause I was too sick. This is a really frustrating problem because I have no idea what I can do to find a remedie or something. I couldn't drink at my formal, my 18th, schoolies (threw up all night every night), and now I can't even socially drink. It makes me so angry because my life as an adult is just getting started and now I'm just worried I'll never be able to build up a tolerance. Please please help me!!

Yours is the first set of symptoms to more closely match what my husband has just experienced after two beers and the typical snacks offered at a social gathering. Within hours he was repetitively shaking from chills and for a first, said "I feel like I can't breathe." Fortunately, no headache or fever and by the next day, after a major elimination, he is improving but still feels strung out. In his case, he is on an array of pharmaceuticals as well as known to be protective for brain and heart supplements and as only a social beer drinker, we have guessed that the offered as bottled beer was old or stale. In any event, this and all of these reported events now sure seem like an allergic reaction or intolerance to the 'mix' of alcohol and dietary fats as a result of LIVER compromise that then results in observable symptoms of toxicity. With the array of environmental exposures we are all exposed to these days, we two will be doing a soon liver detox or cleansing to purge. For the best information on "excitotoxins" that, either immediately or over time, can adversely affect human brain [alcohol, glutamate, aspartame, MSG, HFCS, heavy metals in vaccines, fluoride in drinking water, others] I highly recommend that you look for the prestigious work of Russell L. Blaylock, M.D. who was a neurosurgeon for 26 years and as a result of all the metabolic damage he saw up close and personal, he quit his practice and is now a voracious and trustworthy researcher while getting to the bottom of "why." Another thing, there are supplement compilations specifically designed to counter the ill effects of alcohol consumption and for this, you can look for the optimally aging group known as the Life Extension Foundation. Among many similar entities by now, Dr. Blaylock is on their Advisory Board. Let's all stay safe, and BE well.

When my first reply was posted, it ended up under the wrong comment so when I started with "Yours is the first set of symptoms..." I was referring to the fellow who shared how he had drank and then suffered from the 'chills' among other symptoms.
Additionally, besides the vaccines mentioned in my first post, one needs to know that many drugs these days like statins [Lipitor, others], fluoroquinolones [Cipro, others] and anti-depressant/anti-psychotics [Prozac, Zyprexa, others] are made with fluoride which, along with fluoride in drinking water, can incite a double-whammy with accumulative toxicity not only to the brain and liver, but also the skeleton and teeth. So does this heavy metal have anything to do with the sudden intolerance of alcoholic beverages? I believe it does, especially if, during the adult aging process, the Liver has not been steadily protected [i.e. Milk Thistle, NAC, D3, others] and rather, is getting all the more challenged, since over time and based on repeated exposure, this combo will eventually overwhelm the Liver. Yet, when in a restaurant or other establishment, how many of us think to ask "Is your water for my table or alcoholic beverage fluoridated?" Then with all forms of alcohol, how many of them contain entirely safe levels and forms of the sulfites?
Shifting topic slightly for the bigger picture, I found the comments by another poster about the greater potential of 'acquired' gluten intolerance by more sensitive individuals [like canaries] as not only important, but so is it true that this exposure is related to how our food chain has been seriously tainted by too many less-than-natural applications. In the US, most of the adulterated wheat [other grains] is not in any way of the same caliber or genetic composition that our grandparents grew up on even two generations back. Since WWll, we can thank morally bankrupt companies like Monsanto for this as well as the array of other harms that have been imposed upon many populations around the world by their profit-driven agenda and the invention of bio-engineered plants, pesticides, and other chemicals. Even with the now prolific addition of HFCS [high fructose corn syrup] in all manner of foods, mercury is used in the process of creating this unnatural and cheaper to produce sweetener from GMO-altered corn.
Again, be due diligent cautious with any vaccines and drugs, read all labels to avoid 'excitogens' and eat only safe organic [even with this, FDA fails with proper oversight] as whole, raw, natural state, foods while staying away from those that are processed, including dairy and meats. Granted, it's difficult, so if actions outside of these recommendations are infrequent and done in moderation, you won't feel quite as deprived. And before long, if you keep getting back on task, the acquisition of healthier habits will evolve into preferred choices. Remember, your very life and longevity count on it.

I recently had a slightly different situation. I was instructed by my doctor to give up all alcohol for 8-10 days in preparation for a medical test. Prior to that, I have been an 8+ drink a night drinker, nearly every night, for probably 10 years now and was very alcohol tolerant such that I never was sick afterward, never stumbled or faltered in my speech, etc. So stopping drinking was no problem, as I am not alcoholic per se. I don't CRAVE alcohol, never have, and never exceeded .10 BAC and drank them slowly over a period of 8-10 hours. It was strictly a "habit" and expectation associated with my job and routine. During the process of abstaining I switched to one non-alcoholic beer a day, virgin martinis (water), and virgin margarita's or whatever, cranberry juice, etc. Cut out all whiskey and wine (also lost 5 pounds in the process). After the 10 days was up and I took the test, the very first alcoholic beer I had gave me the worst heartburn I have ever had! It felt like I had a tennis ball in my esophagus and someone had punched me there. It lasted for almost 24 hours. I now have a similar reaction to just about any alcohol. It's like a short total abstinence has ruined me for life.
Oddly, many of the symptoms mentioned by many of you, mirror those of alcoholics placed on the alcohol deterrent Disulfiram. Some of you may want to ensure that a spouse or family member has not conspired with your doctor to "guard your health" and slip some in your food. ;)

ha ha ha. Fatty liver from being out of shape. Just get back in shape and the liver will let you drink again is that the idea?

This helped me out a bunch. Check with your doctor (that's if you're on prescription meds), if you can take some Milk Thistle Extract, it seemed to help me a lot. Idk, look it up anyways. It repairs liver function and stuff down there.

Hi, I am 58 and have been unable to have a drink of alcohol for 25 years. I was allergic to wine before that but could tolerate other drinks. The reason my intolerance developed was because of Coeliac disease. If you have other symptoms such as those attributed to IBS (stomach upsets, tiredness, bowel problems, unexplained anxiety etc) and perhaps have an intolerance to lactose, then I would definitely suggest having a test for Coeliac disease. So many people with Coeliac disease are left undiagnosed for many years and this can lead to some very serious conditions like Bowel Cancer so it is worth having it checked out. An inability to tolerate alcohol is one of the symptoms of this condition and is certainly worth considering as a possible reason. I haven't seen anyone else mention it on this forum so I hope this information helps.
For those who mention the anxiety attacks, I would say that chronic allergies (to food or drink) can cause these . I lost two years of my life due to a chronic allergy to wine based products. All the doctors told me that I had no physical problem - I was just suffering panic attacks. I knew they were wrong but didn't know what could be the cause. It was only when I gave up drinking wine (for financial reasons) that the anxiety stopped. I was totally back to normal within a month. Since then I have twice been given food that contained a wine product (without my knowledge) and had terrible, life threatening reactions. So allergic reaction is also another possible reason for intolerance to alcohol.
