I've had this for many years. It is a type of cranial neuralgia.. (nerve pain) There are several types of "cranial neurlagia" with the pain taking different paths depending on the nerve affected. The herpes simplex virus (cold sore) is one culprit.. it lies dormant in the nerve root until activated by a lowered immune system (having a cold or virus, stress, having your period ext.. ) Valtrex can help if herpes simplex is the cause.

It took me years and lots of money to figure this out. try this link for more info. http://yourtotalhealth.ivillage.com/cranial-neuralgias.html?pageNum=3

I hope this information helps someone

I had a suburachanoid hemmorage 4 years ago and all these shooting pains are called icepick headaches. Unfortunatly after a traumatic brain injury i felt as if it was coming back for me and i had extreme anxiety and i eventually got post traumatic stress disorder and the pains never go away and they feel just as it is named a ice pick stabbing all over, it comes and it goes and they last from seconds to minutes and in the blink of an eye they are gone and back again, no were not crazy and i have been on ativan, indomethocin, neurotin.... so on and so on. So if anyone has any doctor tell them they are just stessed out, boo on them. :?

Reading all your posts brought tears to my eyes because I have the sharp shooting brain pains as well from the top of my head to the middle of my brain and on the right side of my head, accompanied with the severe ear pain whenever I lie on the right side of my head for a prolonged period of time. Sometimes I feel the tingling sensation in the top of my head as well. It also drives me crazy, especially with worry about aneurysms or brain tumors. I am a nursing major at ARC and learing about those things and how there are usually no syptoms of aneurysms or pituitary tumors really scares me that you can feel perfectly fine and not know if your going to experience a life threatening rupture. Knowing i'm not alone and there are people out there that experience the same thing really eases my mind. I recommend that all of you just to be on the safe side have an MRI scan done just to rule out the possibility of an aneurysm or tumor, especially with the symptoms you have. Mine is scheduled for tomorrow. I will try to keep you all posted.
Thanks.

I am 17 Years old. I have the exact same shooting pain. It appears to start from the base of my skull ans shoot up over my right ear. The first time it happened i was playing blind mans bluff in the garden, i collapsed partly from the shock and partly from the pain. Ever since then they have been occurring. They usually happened every month or so on average, sometimes sooner, or sometimes longer. They have been manageable no other effects or anything like that, but the last one kinda scared me.
I was crossing the road with my bike, and this pain happened.. but worse than ever before. Right in the middle of the road i fell to my knees, as my right leg lost all sensation for the time i was in pain, my tongue also went a but numb. Luckily the car that was coming stopped in time and helped me across. But this made me think that i need to find out what it is.. This is the first time it has ever made me go numb or loose feeling. I hope someone managed to find out what it is and what we can do or not do about it.
Thanks for reading

Hello,
I'm 26 yrs old and female and have been experiencing sudden sharp shooting pains in my head. They seem to start slightly to the left at the top of my head and soot down to the bridge of my nose. They are shockingly painful at the time, but don't really hurt immediately afterwards. I've been getting the pains sporadically for about 1 month now. I have no idea what causes it and don't want to take any painkillers as the pain is sporadic. I'm not ill, have not have any colds recently, have never suffered with sinus issues or migraines. Do you think it could be an eye problem?
I'm ever so confused and am worried about going to the doctor for fear of wasting his time. Thanks for the posts!

I have had these sharp pains ( I call them Zingers) they last a second or two. I have had them on and off for years and nothing bad has ever happened as a result of them. I recently had a CT-Scan and it showed Sinus issues. I see oher comments regarding Sinus issues, I believe this has a direct result on it along with STRESS! I had journeled my "zingers" and almost always occurs during a stressful time. I have even woken up for them, but not often. I do believe that the posting from someone suggesting deep breathing is the way to go. My anziety will go from a 1 to a 9 after 3-4 zingers. I hate them....I am glad to see other have them as I have always felt alone with this issue. Thank you all for sharing.

These "primary stabbing pains" are also called ice pick headaches. First any organic cause should be ruled out, which includes but not limited to brain tumor, meningitis, aneurysm and brain abscess. Once you doctor has ruled these like diagnosis, then there could be other causes, i.e. diabetic neuropathy, sinus infection. Infections to the brain can start in the nasal cavities or ears. Another article I read talked about "Arthritis nerve pain in head". Other articles I read states the pains could be cause by obesity related to diet and sugar intake. One last thing I found and want to share is there may be the possibility that the blood flow to certain nerves may be affected.

I am newly having these pains and going for an MRI and a MRA to rule out the most serious problem that could lead up to permanent damage and/or death.

Hope you all will follow up with your doctors to ensure same.

I also have these shooting pains and agree that it is neuraliga from the cold sore virus. My grandmother had the exact same thing for most of her life. I only get it when the virus "acts" up and does not form a cold sore. Sometimes I have tiny blisters on the upper gum when it is acting up as well. It only lasts for a couple of days and seems to be helped by ibuprophen. The stabbing lasts only a day for me. It's nice - well not nice but comforting to see I'm not the only one in the world that has this.

I get a stabbing pain above my right ear at random times as well. I have been getting it since I was 15 and now I am 26. I have no other symptoms except occasional ringing in my ears. I am finally going to a neurologist this week.
I also went to an acupuncturist who showed me the meridian for the gall bladder that runs right through the exact area and she said it would come more often in the spring and has to do with frustration about not moving forward and also unexpressed anger about something. This could be as simple as that but I am going to get a thorough examination because it has bee getting more frequent. it happens every day multiple times now as before it would be once a week or month. I am stressed and my neck is really tight so it gives me hope that it is not a tumor but just tension. but i will see.

Hi...I saw these posts...because I was trying to figure out what could possibly be causing the shooting stabbing pain that I keep getting behind my right eye and it travels back and down behind my ear...today it keeps coming and going...seems like when i'm on the computer it flares up to where I just have to stop what I'm doing until it passes...

What a terrible sharp pain!! if anyone knows what it is I'd love to know!
