I'm 26 now and when I was about 14 or 15 when I got braces off, I noticed this weird shocking shooting pain only in my left side of mouth, they thought it was wisdom teeth and it wasn't and then they took out my bottom retainer and that wasn't it either, the pain would come and go through out the years, and this past year its gotten really bad to the point I couldn't talk, I would have to put some over the counter tooth pain liquid stuff on my teeth/gums. But now I think its cause I hold my tight when I sleep, and so I'm getting mouth guard from my Dentist, I hope that will work. My jaw just started to sound like its cracking.

I had these sudden and momentary shooting pains several years ago. I was told by my doctor that they were probably caused by a nerve problem, and not to worry. I researched and found out some information on trigeminal neuralgia, which seemed to fit my symptoms somewhat. I started going to a chiropractor, and they eventually did go away. However, they returned with a vengeance this week. The only thing I can think of is that the onset of them for me came when I had little babies. My back always kills me when I have babies this age - carrying them, nursing, my posture is horrible! Anyway, hope this helps someone!

I'm glad I read these because I have very similar shooting pains. Mine start at my left temple and shoot back towards the back of my head, they come in spurts. They last for about 2 seconds but, to me, it can be very painful. I'm recovering from a sinus and ear infection so, based on what I read, that's most likely what is causing mine.

oh my goodness, i just saw a retinal specialist for this very thing. i have been having sharp shooting pain behind my left eye to the left temple. this has been going on for 2 weeks. with a full eye examination, the doctor seemed to think it was just sinus pressure(i have had no sinus symptoms at all). stress could be the culprit as well. basically the dr. had no other info or advice. he told me to take sinus medicine and my pain should stop....releived to hear i was ok, but still cant figure out why i am having this pain...

Well, I don't know if this will help anyone, but I just googled my symptoms and found they are synonymous with TMJ. TMJ is the TemporoMandibular Joint, by which your jaw is attached to your head. My pain has been shooting, stabbing pain, going up from my right lower jaw to behind my ear, in the sinus-type area. Pressure hasn't seemed to work, and acetaminophen wasn't working, either. I got Maximum Strength Orajel, since I thought it was a toothache, and I could feel the pain in my upper and lower right teeth. It did help a little, however temporarily, or at least to distract me from the pain. I have been chewing mostly on the right side of my mouth for over a couple of years, due to extensive decay in my back lower left molar, and no dental insurance to fix it. Heat does seem to help, and the website that I found recommended heat. It also says "Checking for dental problems and readjusting your bite can help. Stubborn cases of TMJ dysfunction may require further consultation with an oral surgeon or dentist. Your dentist can fit you with a splint to open your bite and decrease bruxism (grinding your teeth while sleeping)." Some of the symptoms listed were popping of the jaw, which I have had for years. Here's the website I found:
Anyway, hope it helps somebody...

As far as TMJ goes that is a very different problem than the shooting pain in the head with the tingling. I broke my jaw in two places & therefore had tmj, when all my work on my jaw was done I was still in alot of pain. My Chiropractor did cranial work inside my mouth on the roof of my mouth & did amazing things for me. It relieved back, neck & jaw pain. If your pain is jaw related you may need a mouth peice to stop grinding but I would look for a Chiropractor that does cranial adjustments.

I just started getting the shooting pain above my left temple today. It feels like stabbing for a second or two. I found it so weird that 2 people on here mentioned Vitamin Water. For the last 2 weeks I've been drinking them and also Propel waters. Also I took an Ambien sleeping pill last night, but this is nothing out of the ordinary for me.

:'( I am having these infrequent sharp pains in my right lob. Inside my head. Not a headache or migraine. It is at level 1, but it's scaring me. It shoots through my head feeling like it is close to my right nostril. This is the second day of the pain. But, if it's not a stroke, heart-attack, or brain anoriism what do you do? It would just run up a million dollar health bill at the emergency room. My husband is here, and I told him about it so at least he knows what to say if I faint or soemthing; god forbid. Take care everybody. P.S. I am healthy.

My shooting pain is usually the result of moving my neck to the side very quickly. Other than that I do not experience the pain and it quickly subsides after about 5 seconds. Afterward I have a sore spot for a minute or so and then it goes away altogether.
