I strongly suggest that a halter monitor would not be the best course of action, if the pt is symptomatic then they need to be treated immediately, rather than wait for a referral for a 24 hr monitor.

There should be no compromise when it comes to seeking immediate treatment for a potentially life threatening condition as the pp described.

hi. sorry to hear of your recent injury, if the guy fell flat onto you, it is more than likely that you have just suffered bruising. However if he landed with an elbow for example into you then you (in other words a more focussed impact) then you have a higher risk of boney injury.

If you have noticed any bruising, or are struggling to take a deep breath, or are in significant pain, then I suggest that you see a doctor to get checked out.

on the bright side if it is just bruising then you should start to feel a noticeable improvement within the next couple of days.

Hope you feel better soon.

Hi I think I may have a bruised or cracked rib in my back but I'm not sure. I was lifting weights the other day and woke up the next day with slight muscle pain but not much however I then fell on my back in the snow, pretty hard, and now have extreme pain when I breathe deeply, lay down, or sit for very long. The pain is in my upper back but below my shoulder blades and when I breathe radiates up my back. Advice?

Two weeks ago I fell while sprinting the 55m dash at a track meet and ever since I have had pain in my upper right chest. I am fairly sure that I fractured/broke it, but I have doubt due to how I fell. I landed on my knees and hands, scraping them all a bit. My left knee was in the worst shape. I fell hard enough to take a decent sized chunk out of the toe of one of my spikes (sprinting shoes). A few mintes after I fell, I noticed that it hurt to inhale. I dismissed it as a pulled muscle. However, two weeks later, it is even more painful and there is a bump in one of my ribs right next to what feels like a gap/ravine. it is incredibly painful to touch that area, and it hurts to twist my torso, lie down, sit up, inhale, exhale, cough, sneeze, anything else that involves expanding or contracting my chest, and bearing weight with my right arm (i hurt what I think is my 3rd rib on my right side, in the front of my chest). Like I said, I am fairly sure i fractured my rib, but I don't see how since my chest never came into direct contact with something when I fell. Could my fall have caused it? Is it indeed broken?

Hi

As i'm sure you've realised from the other replies it can take quite a while for your symptoms to resolve, ultimately like any other fracture it will take around 6 weeks to heal, however it may be less or more depending on the severity of the break and your healing time.

I suggest you see your gp for a review if your pain hasnt eased off a little in the next week or so. Obviously if your symptoms worsen or you have problems breathing then seek help sooner.

As for returning to work - again discuss this with your doctor.

Hope this helps

Hi

2 days ago i was at my local recylcling center empty rubbish into the containers when i realised that i dropped my necklace in, i couldnt quite reach by stretching so like an id**t i am jolted myself forward against the metal. i went ribs (left side ribs) first into it and it instantly whinded me and found it difficult to talk for the first 5 mins after it happened. Ever since then i have been having problems bending, lifting, stretching and trying to sleep is horrendous ( as i cant get comfortable). Also when i am driving or sat still in a chair i get constant pain as well as applying pressure hurts too.

Any ideas???

Hi

I was riding a four wheeler when I accidentally hit a ditch. The handlebar hit my lower left chest. It feels like my lowest left rib was hit. I didn't hear a crack. It doesn't hurt to breathe, cough, laugh, or any other of the symptoms except that it has a sore pain when I apply presseure to it. Did something happen to it or is it just internally bruised? Thanks

Hi, I woke up about two to three days ago and I had bad pain all down my ribs, left side, I thought nothing of it but as the days have progressed it has gotten worse. I can not laugh, cough, yawn or breath deeply. The pain is the worst at bedtime as I find I can not lay down and breath as it causes me pain. It has also spred to my shoulder blade aswell. I have taken two Ibuprofen daily but find that they do me no good as to take away the pain. I don't know If I have cracked a rib as it is not sore to touch, but is when I press hard. It's not the same on my right side. I don't know how this as happened as I just simply woke up like it, but I am rather restless when I am sleeping. Thanks for your help.

Hi,
I am an id**t. I am a 45 year old male who went mountain biking @weeks ago. During the course of the trail, I hooked a vine with my handlebars which flipped me and my bike. I was going 10-15 MPH when this occurred. I landed on top of my bike and impaled my sternum on the handlebars (they were perpendicular to the ground). I lost my breath/struggled to breathe for a good 5 mins or so.

I experienced heavy pain in the mid chest area as I biked back out 5 miles, jolts through the handlebars felt like direct blows to the chest. It has been about two weeks and during that time I have continued to do limited exercise (run/bike, no upper body). I have trouble sleeping due to pain in my sternum area, so I take Ibuprofen. When I exercise, the discomfort is increased. When running, at times, my central chest becomes numb for a bit with some edge tingling.

I have experienced generalized pain, some numbness at times and a curious itchiness where the ribs attach to the sternum. Last night, upon lifting some heavy objects, the pain returned to my chest area, and breathing was a bit difficult (such as to talk in a loud voice).

Is this something I should seek medical attention for, or will it continue to heal on ts own?
