Everything I eat tastes the same...........very bland........sweet or salty all taste odd. I have not been sick, I do not have a cold but I do have a constant sore throat. I went to the doctor and he took a throat culture. The results should be back next week. I'll keep you posted.
Right now, pizza taste like stale wheat thins. No flavor at all. Hope we all feel better.......Good Luck!

Hi, I lost my taste the first time was after third month pranangcy, but three months after gave birth, they came back from bitterness, saltiness, sourness, spicy then sweetness. But, fifteen months later, all taste gone again till now is Nov. 2010, I still taste nothing. Not a flavour. I smell all kinds no problem, but non of the taste I can tell. It's like blocking all the taste behind a piece of glass that I see, but can't taste. No doubt that I went through all kinds of doctors, even allergist, also tong accuponture. Yeah! I want to know why and why and why. Honestly, this is no joke at all. Note!!!! I can't even taste the bitterness, so every kind of drink to me is just like water with smelling flvour. It's upsetting! But, I kind of use to it now, like no expectation, no tempting, no life........

Hello, i have the same problems as all of you. My loss of taste is do to not enough saliva in the mouth. Its due to when you sleep, you do not breathe through your nose and through your mouth. This needs to change. Do not eat anything sweet before bed ( that stimulates the taste buds to get ready for more) and then you let them down and they stay erect and open and you then fall asleep...breathing through your mouth and drying them up, thus killing them. Do you follow? My gramar is terrible. sorry. go get nose strips. "breathe rite" they will open your nose and help you breathe better. Constantly drink water, bottle after bottle. Stay away from salt for a week or two. and in two weeks you will be like new. I promise. If you need more help email me ***this post is edited by moderator *** *** private e-mails not allowed **

I've been researching this today, because I had dry champagne last night. I have a weird reaction to dry wines that I first discovered years ago. I had very dry wine and afterwards nothing tasted sweet everything tasted dry. I was worried at the time but after a week my sweet taste returned. The last time I wanted to start a diet I though this would be great but the driest wine I could find didn't do anything. This year I saw a very dry champagne and thought I'd try it and I forgot that I didn't want it to work until next week. So I was double checking to make sure that taste buds recover after a week.

The point is I've discovered a few things that might help the others here. First, having all your tastes effected is different that just having a few effected. If all five tastes are effected, then it probably has something to do with your saliva or mucus production because the buds themselves aren't exposed to the surface air and the saliva transports chemicals in your food to the taste buds.

For specific tastes, like my sweet issue, their are two groups of taste buds by how they connect with the brain. Salty and sour transmit using ion channels with apparently is well understood (but not by me, google it if you want to know) while sweet, bitter and savory communicate with the brain with G protein-couple receptors which I can't even begin to understand and is apparently a more commplicated issue. So if you just have a problem with a few tastes, it should be at the most three (if your protein-couple receptors are effected) or two (if the ion receptors are effected). But of course, it is possible to have only one taste effected as well.

I am surprised to hear that some people have had this problem for months. Maybe I should stay away from dry wine instead of using it as a diet aid.

Can anyone who reads this actually post ideas to fix this or is TIME the only cure????

For two weeks I have had a perfect sense of smell, but the taste of sweet is 100% gone. This came out of no where and I am in perfect health. I noticed the other day my tongue is very slightly swollen. When I sleep there is some discomfort from my teeth rubbing against my tongue. This was new and only has started in the last two weeks.

Additionally salty, sour, bitter, and unami are there but not as strong. If I have any liquor these tastes completley dissapear but come back the next day.

Things I have tried include Colgate Peroxyl, taking B-12 or Folic Acid, tongue scraper, multi-vitamins, and yogurt. Nothing is working to restore taste buds. Currently, I am trying gargling with a salt water mix three times a day. Hoping for somethign to work.

I am having the same problem. I'm not sick, I'm not congested. I thought that maybe the dry air in my house was the cause. I've scrubbed my tongue, I've rinsed and repeated. I woke up one morning ( 3 days ago) and couldn't taste the creamer in my coffee. All I taste is the bitterness. It's not fat free creamer. It's used with real sugar. I can taste a cookie, but the sweet is dull and the taste is bitter after wards. I still can't taste my coffee creamer, and it is making me really cranky. I plan on seeing the doctor on Tuesday. According to these posts, it wont do any good. It's a scary thought, not tasting sweet. I fear it will get worse.

I am the samer poster from 1/3/11 11:28 AM. I have been trying out the saltwater rinse for about one week.

My sweet taste is about 30% back after three weeks of nothing !!!!

I am not sure if it is just a function of time or the salt rinse is working. Either way, I'll continue doing the rinse until I'm at 100%.

It was a year this past Thanksgiving that I lost my taste for sweets. I still have my taste for bitter, sour and salt. I wasn't sick and never used any sweetners. It's been over a year and still no sweet taste. It has made all my food taste different and sometimes I feel I don't want to eat. My doctor said the good news is it's not fatal.....hmmmm

I lost complete taste for about 6 weeks and it gradually came back. That was about 18 - 24 months ago and currently it's gone again. Although, I have regained sour and salty weakly. There is a solution. It worked for me once and it is what will work again. That solution is prayer to Jesus. The first time my taste failed, I was about 60lbs over-weight. The experience taught me to eat in moderation. I lost the extra pounds and I've kept it off.

So put it in God's hands and he'll work it out. And, don't be mislead that you're not good enough to pray. God knew you weren't ever going to be perfect, but he had to give us the example.

This exact same thing happened to me too :-( my taste was fine yesterday and I could taste everything fine! But today I made myself pancakes but when I ate them there was nothing to taste! Al I could do with my tongue was feel the texture which made me want to gag... and this evening I had chocolate cake and my mom let me lick the icing mix bowl... it was the worst thing I ever tried because there was just a big hunk of gooey nothing... but when someone else tried it they said it tated just fine... I pride myself in my keen sense of taste... but now I'm worried it'll never come back. My smell is fine I feel great so there's no cold and nothing has happened to me recently and I don't do drugs or anything... please someone help...

This is also happening to me, i noticed i couldnt taste anything sweet last week. I then immediately tried to do some research on why this is happening and i stumbled onto this forum. Decided to wait a couple of days to see if it fixes itself... it did not. I went to the doctors two days later and he recommended me to rinse with salt water. Besides regular brushing and scraping my tongue i've rinse with salt water 3-4 times a day for almost a week now and i still cant taste anything sweet... I hope it comes back even though i don't usually eat alot of sweets, but its messing up the flavours of some foods i eat and its getting annoying.
