I too cannot taste food and enjoy my food. It's almost as if I have had a mini stroke or something. Everything tastes like mush. This started for me about 2 weeks ago. My husband will taste what I am eating and tells me it tastes fine. My stress level has jumped during this time which makes me feel as if a mini stroke has taken place or something. I am trying to eliminate all things unnecessary in my daily routine to promote a less stressful environment for me, but still can't taste the way I once did. I miss enjoying my meals. Because I cannot taste my food, I don't care to eat much now. Just letting you guys know you are not alone. God bless you.

I was taking the same antibiotic, i.e. Bactrim-DS. Oral thrush is easily treated with antifungals such as as nystatin, miconazole or amphotericin B. However, I'm not aware there is a link between oral thrush and loss of taste. Have you treated the condition? Any results? I might try a course or antifungal just to see.

What kind of antibiotic did you take? I just finished Bactrim-DS for a sinus infection and I can't tast anything much lately especially sweet. They think I may have a oral thrush due to antibiotic. :?

Mom3kids, I suspect there might indeed be a link between Bactrim and our condition (loss of taste for sweet things only). Did your situation resolve, or are you still experiencing the same?

6 years ago I lost my sense of taste for sweet things while on the antibiotic minocycline. I was on no other medications at the time - and my sweet taste ability came back when I went off the medication. I asked my Dr. and pharmacist and no one had heard of that reaction.

My inability to taste sweet began without any change in meds save for a new BCP prescription... I did, however, recovered from a slight cold that included a slight feeling of an ear infection. It went away within a day so I thought I was fine. A week later, I was unable to taste anything sweet. I went through months of trying the process of elimination... stopping prescription, changing laundry detergent, changing toothpaste, etc. to no avail.

The doctors have been baffled. Acupuncture yielded no results. It's been 15 months with no relief, save for the fact that I dropped 20 pounds and now, over a year later, food doesn't taste absolutely disgusting as it did in the beginning. I think my brain is adapting to my "broken" taste buds.

I've given up on doctors because they don't seem to think this is a real problem. A brain MRI revealed nothing unusual, but clearly this would seem to be something neurological. Perhaps the tickling of an ear infection from that mini-cold somehow damaged nerves. I read a research paper I found somewhere on the web that the nerves of the sweet taste receptor run through the middle ear... maybe that cold virus zapped them.

It's disturbing that this is happening to others as well. Is there something in the water? (Oh yeah, I changed that too... the water I was drinking, that is.)

I am amazed at how many people have this same thing happening. I have lost all taste as of about a month ago. It is very helpful in that I only eat when I am extremely hungry but at the same time I miss being able to taste some of my favorite foods. It is not just sweets for me though it is all foods. Sweet tea is the only thing that I can remotely taste. My BP has been elevated and I have been having headaches and after reading here I am wondering if I have suffered a mini stroke.

Wow. My taste has been gone for almost 2 weeks now. I first noticed it in a restaurant when a crab and shrimp cake sandwich I ordered did not taste good enough to eat. I left it on the plate and the server took it off my bill. I told her there was not anything wrong with it - it just did not taste good. The next morning my husband bought me my favorite bagel to which I added cream cheese and raspberry jam, and I ended up throwing out the jar of jam because it was not sweet and I thought it had gone bad. I began to realize that nothing tasted good, I can not taste sweet at all and I have a salty (I don't think I can call it metallic) taste in my mouth all the time. It is very frustrating. I keep trying things hoping it is coming back, but it has not. I read someone's comment about the Lamisil, and subsequently found a posting site where lots of angry folks talked about taking Lamisil and losing there sense of taste. I also had been taking Lamisil for 6 weeks when my taste problem occurred. I relayed all of this to my primary care physician, and she ordered blood work for me and told me it might be the Lamisil (she won't take it for her toenail fungus!). She also gave me a Z pack because I had just caught a cold and she wanted to make sure my sinuses were clear. I will go back to see her Monday of next week and will learn if the blood tests showed anything. I heaved the bottle of Lamisil into the trash the day I read the postings about it. I feel like I should go to the crab/shrimp cake sandwich restaurant and pay them for the sandwich (not their fault!). Along with the taste problem I have also been having brief periods of vertigo or lightheadedness.

I just discovered that a fungus or fungal can cause taste loss or yeast infection. One medical term is call CANDIDA. We all carry the bad bacteria, but when our body is fighting something else this bad bacteria takes over the good bacteria, this causes a fungal infection in the blood. This fungal actually grows roots from our intestinal and grows to other parts of our body. There are over 100 symptoms and signs of CANDIDA. some are jock itch, athletes' foot, women yeast infections, gas or flatule. Rash, sinus infections, acne, fatigue, muscle pain, headaches, HEARTBURN...indigestion, post nasal drip, ear aches, memory loss, the list goes on, please google it and read about it. Your doctor can test you to see if this the reason for your problem. But they won't check unless you ask. :-)

Hi Everyone

I found this page after suffering these symptoms for a week and despaired that no-one seemed to have any answers.

I have just returned from my doctor and may have some answers that will help some of you.

My symptoms are caused by oral candida, basically - oral thrush. I have had vaginal thrush recently and used a thrush cream "down there". I mention this because a lot of the posters mention using Lamasil which is a similar type of cream and tinea is a fungal infection (like vaginal thrush). It's likely that the candida (which is a topical infection) as moved from your fingers to your mouth (Yes, I know, we don't want to go there about what it means for me and _my_ infection o.O !)

Mine flared up again because a very careless waitress made me a soy coffee with soy milk containing gluten. I am very allergic to gluten and for me, one of the symptoms is thrush, though this is the first time I've ever had it in the mouth.

I have done the candida diet in the past and frankly, it didn't work for me and it was impossible to follow. I was craving sugar more than I had ever done (I don't add sugar to anything) and I was exhausted all of the time. These symptoms did not improve (despite assurances they would go away) over the weeks and after 6 weeks I was still exhausted.

The doctor has prescribed an oral nilstat (generic name I think) solution for me to swill around in my mouth 4 times a day and he says that will cure the taste bud problem.

I remain skeptical, but will post a response in a week and let you know if it worked.

Regards

KF

The exact same thing is happening to me!!!! I lost my taste of everything. It started 2 years ago after I came home from the hospital after having a total hysterectomy. I been to a ENT physician couldn't Dx it. Had a brain scan done, no one could figure this out. Did anyone else experience this??? I have spent many nights on the web looking for answers and clues. COuld it be the general anesthesia I received???? I treated myself for candida, thinking that was it, but it wasn't. I have tried everything!!!!!!!! I can smell PERFECTLY!!!!!
Any suggestions or input????????
Thanks

I have just experienced what the above person described to the letter. I starting feel pretty rough (cold/flu like symptoms) on a Friday. I was in bed alll day feeling lousy on Saturday. I was up and about to a limited extent, but still feeling pretty bad until Tues. On Sunday I couldn't taste anything sweet. Today (Monday) the situation is the same. I can smell. My nose is not plugged up. I cannot taste M&M's, but I can tast salty, tangy. Ate a turkey sandwhich for lunch an all I could really tast was the mustard.

I'm making a Dr. appointment, but I am doubtful based on the above experiences that I will receive a solution to the problem.

I have exactly the same symptoms of not tasting sugar but I can taste spenda. I saw a neurologist yesterday and he said it could be a side effect of the Captopril I take to control high blood pressure. I have been taking Captopril for years with no side effect. I am thinking it could be damaged taste buds from drinking burning hot coffee or tea. I also have cervical stenosis and neck pain but the neurologist said that nerve in my neck or base of the brain would effect all tastes and smells and not single out sweets. I am going to change my captopril anyway.

My friend and i went to speak to my dr. who is an M.D....homeopathic physician/ regarding the total loss of taste! O.K. she stated: she has
a modality option that may or may not work...the good news was that one would know after just one treatment. The modality is called
"Microcurrent" it doesnt hurt and is price affordable. My Dr. name Is Shirley Hartman. I personally, have had micro treatments for an
array of problems.....stemming from Candida to Vertigo......it helped me everytime. Regarding taste....Dr. H. stated that sometimes the
taste buds are dormant and need to be awoken....She said sometimes they are irritated and the inflamation is causing the loss of taste. She
also said that once a Taste Bud dies.....its DEaD forever, they do not rejuvenate.....I was devastated with that knowledge. My Best friend cant
taste food, and she Italian need i say more! O.K. Dr. Hartman said that the microcurrent treatments could work on the nerve that causes
temp....loss....One must pray, and see if this is a modality that they think might work for them. Microcurrent can be found locally wherever
you live! Plus check into Accupuncture too
Carole, is scheduled in Oct. to have a micro treatment will post her findings
Bless You all
and keep on praying and trying....

8 months now and still have a very reduced sense of taste for sweetness, started in the winter of 2010. Coca cola has no taste, honey is just something in the mouth, banana reminds me of eating raw potatos (starchy), chocolate is just mush in the mouth. Just ate an entire 1 pound bag of M&M (peanuts covered in chocolate), no sweetness detected, but now heart is beating fast and I feel sick. A 3 week dose of steroids prescribed by a physician last April did not help (normal treatment supposedly). Am now scheduled for more tests at the local hospital soon.

Nystatin. I was just in the hospital for three weeks; one of the myriad of things I had was a terrible case of thrush. I used Nystatin along with a couple of other swish and swallow prophylactics (hey, that's what they called them). I couldn't STAND the way the nystatin tasted! It smelled like bananas and was yellow syrupy ick. But my tastebuds have been totally different. Everything tastes WAAAY too sweet to me. When my husband eats yogurt, I want to eat sour cream. Weird. Plus I was also on Bactrim (antibiotic) along with the Diflucan IV and Vancomycin IV. And Keflex. and some other antibiotics.
