Thank u so much for ur post. I completely agree! About 15 years ago I injured my back (ruptured several disc) and about 5 yrs ago got hit with debilitating crippling ra and osteo/arthritis which I had no idea was so excruciating! In addition I suffer from severe scoliosis and carpal tunnels syndrome. I have been on pain management for over 15 yrs and the difference of what docs are able to prescribe now as apposed to back then is astounding! Before my injury and development of these severely painful conditions I now suffer from I wouldn't even take an aspirin. I have never drank or done illegal drugs. I have no history of drug abuse. I have always taken my meds as prescribed to the tee. Yet the doc I have now is only prescribing about a quarter of the medication I was getting 15yrs ago for a les savere pain condition because of the new stricter laws. I am also on disability and the state even mandates how many pills per month he can prescribe me! It is outrageous!! Back then I got relief and was completely functional on my meds. Now I suffer tremendous pain EVERYDAY because I'm on a dose that is too low because of this "war on people." My dose of OxyContin should have gone up because of tolerance and the fact that my pain is much worse now than it was then. 15yrs ago I was on 100mg of oxcycontin twice day and 90 lortab 10/325 for breakthrough. To day after my condition has worsened by leaps and bounds my doc is only able to prescribe 30mg oxcycontin er twice a day and 15mg of oxcicodone. I suffer SAVERE PAIN everyday can't even get out of bed most days use a wheelchair and my docs hands are tied. He's a great pain mangment doc who wants to give me the appropriate doses but cannot because of my state insurance (Medicaid) and the DEA has made it all but impossible for him to do so. I used to get 180 4xday breaktrough but as of July he said the state won't allow more than120 a month of my medicine no matter what. So, I suffer EVERYDAY with SAVERE pain! And I believe it's gonna get worse for us who legitimately need these effective pain meds. I would love to exchange email get more info from u. Also, what can we do about these unjust laws or so called war on drugs keeping us from getting the correct amounts and kinds (narcotic) medications that work so well with minimal side effects? Maybe we should start a partition to the Gov demanding they lay off our docs and let them do their jobs and give us the meds that work!?!

I'm sure life is lovely atop your soapbox, but you are criminally ignorant on this issue and unnecessarily nasty as well. Your clueless sanctimony may help you feel gloriously superior to people with chronic, progressive disabling diseases (so, congratulations?), but you have added nothing of value to this conversation.

I have to disagree with you, there is a possibility that this person quit cold turkey because you know what?! I did. It is possible...I went 6 years dependent on Percocet 10mg 12x - day....if I can do it you can too! you just have to find what works for your body. You need to be head strong....Withdrawal is no joke! It's horrible...but I did it cold turkey after attempting many many times, I was close to suicide cause I didn't think it was possible... and it is possible!

This was an interesting and informed post. I too, suffer from chronic, severe back pain. I especially aprreciated your last, full paragraph, asking since when do beaurocrats make decisions based on drug abusers and fools, instead of sound medical judgement. In America, this is the way our beaurocrats make all decisions. I hope you are doing as well as you can, and thank you for your post.

I'm allergic to Hydrocodone and use prescription pain relief less than 1 cycle per year. I don't know why Oxycodone is not recommended as a first line pain reliever, it works great for me with just a very small amount of dizziness as the only side effect. I have used Oxycodone as my first line of pain relief in combination with moderate doctor approved amounts of Tylenol and Ibuprofen. After a recent triple hernia repair, I took three 5mg tablets the first and second days, two the third day, 1 the fourth day and a couple of half tablets in combination with up to 8 Ibuprofen and 3 Tylenol per day (doctor approved) over the next week or so.

Ice been going to pain management for many years. They did good keeping me out of pain until last year. I live in Tennessee and last year Tennessee came in second in the most overdose from pain medicine. Now the dea has came in and told them to either cut back on the pain meds they were giving or they would shut them down. I now only get about 1/4 of what I used to. The result is I stay in pain 24/7. Also because I take Xanax I had to go see a Phycoligist because I'm considered high risk for overdose. I've been going for over 20 years. Had no problems. Always had the correct pill count when I went back but because of the ones who have abused them so bad I now have to stay in pain. It's not just my doctor either. It's all pain management doctors. My back is really bad. They have the MRI and X-rays to prove it but it doesn't matter. I'm not an additive type of person. I only took my meds when I had to. Yet I now stay in pain because of those who abused them so bad. It just doesn't seem right that I should have to pay for what they do. Mine is bad but I feel for those who are even worse off than me. Its really Sad !!

Everyone's pain tolerance is different.

Ouch! I pretty much agree with your assessment though.

You could not be more correct with your assessment of the 'cold-turkey' story. I am in the same boat as you and have run out a day or two early about 5 times in the last 10 or so years as a chronic pain sufferer. It is more horrible than anyone can really describe and I can't imagine anyone who is in pain already would voluntarily quit cold-turkey unless one is into self torture and misery. Chronic moderate to severe pain is awful to live with and it really limits what you can do in your life but in my opinion, withdrawal from high-dose opioids is much worse.

DEA pressure on weak doctors in the USA has caused more severe pain left untreated and more illegal drug sales thanthing else. These damn doctors forget about the oath to "not hurt anyone" and are so afraid of losing their cash machines that they LET PATIENTS SUFFER KNOWINGLY.

Its not the abuse. Its that no insurance company will pay it on contin cause some reason I just went to fill my script. Forty 80mill g . and my insurance was a no go.I asked the lady why.and she said because no insurance co.wil sheay be wrong but o heard from others also and .my other Dr said I have no idea why they scribe it because that reason .it was 800 bucks to fill. So if I filled it I'd have to sale them for high prices or why even do the effort .I mean really 800 well like 756 .who HSS that much for pills, Come on .so next time you buy one you know the persons not ripping you off just making it right .good luck I'd never sale mine I need them.and to big risk.
