I am a 54 year old female, smoker, who has been told to have my tonsils out as soon as possible. I have had strep and/or tonsillitis three times in the past three months. One of those times I was hospitalized for 4 days. That was the fourth time in my life I have been in the hospital for my tonsils being infected. My mother refused to have them out when I was a child because of a fear of me having surgery. What should I expect post-op? How long should I expect to be off work? Will the pain last more than a week or two? What are the risks of the surgery? Do you think it is necessary at my age? Thank you in advance.

Well tonsillectomy is most common procedure today. So I don’t think that you have much to worry about. And for sure you won’t have these problems after the procedure. You are in pain for three month and I know that this is not pleasant at all.
After the procedure you will stay for one day in hospital I think. If everything is done good you won’t stay longer. After that, you should be on a soft diet. I think you will eat soups for some time, although doctors suggest that you get back to your regular diet as soon as possible. But I don’t think this is possible in first week at least. And the pain should stop at the second week.
