Hey,

I'm on day 3 of recovery from a tonsillectomy. After reading all the horror stories online saying how painful the recovery is, I feel a little bit blessed as I wouldn't say I've felt really any pain.

They used electro surgery to remove the tonsils, I woke up and felt no pain. You can feel your throat has changed and you speak slower but there was no pain. In recovery, the nurse offered me pain meds which I declined as I wasn't in pain. I had a sleep, woke up, she offered me more and I still didn't need it. I was kind of freakin' out thinking how bad the pain would be once the anaesthesia wore off, but yeah ... still waiting for the pain.

I recommend you EAT straight after the surgery. They asked me to eat a sandwhich which I did with no problems. It takes a while to eat but it's not too sore. There's discomfort but not really pain.

I went home that day and had a full on meal. The reason they said to eat normally is so that you are constantly rubbing away at the scabs instead of the scab becoming so thick and then when it falls off, bleeds quite bad. So yeah day 1 until now (day 3) I have made a point of eating every meal and I think that's helped. It might take you a while but it's worth it.

The pain has been a constant 1 or 2 out of 10 (10 being the worst), and max of 3/10 when i try to eat. But I have learned, taking pain relief just before eating will reduce that. Swallowing is not sore but just more a bit uncomfortable ... just like a sore throat you get when you have a cold or flu. You also feel the bruising in the mouth. Last night I felt the throat starting to get a bit scratchy but managed still to get through the night with no pain killers. I recommend setting your alarm to wake up 2-3 times a night just to hydrate your mouth and see if anything is sore. I will wake up, drink heaps of water and chew some gum for about 20mins then go back to sleep.

The tongue feels a bit bigger today/bit swollen but not sore. And I have bad breath which I'm praying will go away once completely healed. But generally, it's been a breeze compared to the 'end of the world' stories I had read online before hand. Honestly, the worst pain I've ever felt in my life was having my upper ear pierced (I actually thought I would die!!) ... having tonsils removed compared to that ... this is a piece of cake. So we'll just wait and see how it goes when the scab comes off but I'm not imagining more than a 5/10 pain as so far it's been real good.

Try not to talk to much. You talk REAL slow, so just let it heal first. Good luck if you're having the procedure done, and don't believe all the horror stories you hear :)

Hi, How long did it take you to recover? I am on day four now and am feeling the same. Although I have only really eaten soft foods so far. Were the scabs painful when they came off and what day was that? Thanks.

@Kate and guest, How old are you ? I have herd age is a major factor for pain levels, the younger the less pain
