I had a total thyroidectomy in 2000 and have steadily put on weight. I take .175 synthroid daily. I have watched calories, added exercise, even hired a personal trainer and continue to gain weight. The medical professionals have no mercy and say it is due to my age and eating habits. I cut my caloric intake to 1350 a day and increased workout time to 1/2 hour of walking and 1/2 of bicycling and GAINED weight. It is frustrating. Sure wish I had an answer.

I had a partial thyroid removal and they will not put me on any synthetic hormones agh. I have gained 40 lbs. in two years and nothing works. I wish they would listen to me me when I tell them something doesn't feel right, and aside from the fourty pounds I now am suffering from panic attacks, and depression. What do I need to do ?

I had total removal Sept 2009, and have gained weight. I have increased exercise to hit target heart rate plus intervals, plus weight training, plus restrict caloric to 1300 cal/day. There has to be more in the "diet" portion. Foods that should be avoided, etc. ANY information would be helpful.
Also, I agree, Dr's are pretty unsympathetic to the weight gain.

I wish I had better news for everyone, but I have been battling this problem as well as others for well over 25 years ago. I had total thyroid removal at age 16 due to cancer. Since then, I have had to following chronic medical symptoms:
Chronic Fatigue (this is the one that gives me the most problem), failure to loose weight even though I workout vigorously six days a week and strictly monitor my caloric intake (no more than 1200-1300 daily), constipation, thinning-dry-brittle hair, constant feeling of being cold, lowered sex drive, moodiness, inability to stay focused or concentrate, depression at times, dry skin, achy bones, and many many more.
As far as weight loss, the only success I have had with it is through prescribed diet pills that are too expensive. I workout to keep my heart in shape as I am on 250mg of thyroid hormone replacement daily, and to keep from being morbidly obese) I am 5'7'' and work hard to maintain under 180 pounds. Not easy at all. I have gained as much as 10 pounds in one week and not from overeating or under exercising. The weight gain just happened suddenly.
All these years, I have yet to find a doctor who has been able to help and to be honest, most do not seem to care about my symptoms or the effect they have had on my quality of life. They have all said it is part of the disease and I "just have to learn to live with it." I have learned to tolerate the symptoms, but refuse to "Learn to live with it." as I believe there is a doctor who will come up with a miracle cure for everyone who suffers from this unfortunate disease. I do feel thyroid doctors need to stop and really listen to his or her patient, research further than what they learned in medical school, and above all be sympathetic to sufferers because this can be an extremely depressing disease for many.

Hi there,
So far I have only had a partial thyroidectomy, but I just found out today that I will be having the remainder removed as well. I also have follicular variant of papillary carcenoma. I immediately started taking 1600IU of Vitamin D, which contrary to popular belief is a safe level for anyone that does not spend hours a day in the sun. Vitamin D helps the body to use calcium better, which the brain needs. After my total thyroidectomy I also plan to start with magnesium and zinc. Most of the research on this comes from searching myself. I quit smoking last year and have gained 20lbs between that and this thyroid thing. Based on the particulars of one thyroidectomy diet, the key is to eat more than the traditional diet calories to stop your body from storing. For my height (5'4") and current weight, I should have about 1600 calories in 5 or 6 small meals during the day. I have already lost 4 lbs using this method. Now we will see what happens when the whole thyroid is out. I am certainly not accustomed to carrying this extra weight. My legs and feet feel swollen most of the time.
Don't give up trying!!

I had my thyroid removed in Sept '05, and almost immediately gained 50 pounds. Granted I was at a very unhealthy weight due to the inability to get my hyperthyroidism undercontrol, but imagine the shock I got when I added on 50% of my previous weight! Since then my weight has slowly gone up, and like many I have been very frustrated with the doctor telling me my med levels were fine even when I wasn't taking the pills. I'm never in the normal range, yet he still says it's fine. It hasn't been until recently that I've said enough is enough and started to tone back up.
In the long run, I think the weight will always be there, it's just a matter of feeling good about yourself and healthy while accepting it will never be like it was.

I have been putting off thyroidectomy surgery mainly because of the side effects. Ive been on synthroid for about 40 yrs and fighting weight gain has been a constant struggle for the last 20 with increased arthritis, and a torn bicep its almost impossible. Needless to say when thyroid removal was recommended 8 mo. ago I have been very depressed. Reading all the letters on this subject is very discouraging. Most of the people are MUCH younger , are taking the proper dosages, diet and exercise and still gain or cant lose weight. Ive been saying I dont want to be 400 lbs. but it seems unavoidable. Im only 5'1 and every poiund looks like 5. I feel like crying whenever I think of it yet friends and family are nagging me to go through with the operation. I have yet to see a letter that doesnt say they are tired, depressed and heavy.

My TSH levels stay between .5 and 2.0....still gain weight or maintain my over 60 lb. weight gain even though TSH levels low....for 4 months I exercised 2 hours a day and ate restricted 900 calorie diet...took off 12 lbs., then caught a cold, and was inside for one week....gained it all back. So very discouraged with lethargy, foggy brain, inadequate sleep patterns, etc. My doctor suggested either lap band surgery or 'duct tape' for my mouth....my blood sugar levels are down requiring no more diabetes meds and blood pressure down....all due to diet and exercise but NO weight loss ... thyroid removed Oct. 2007 due to cancer...took 15 doctors in 8 years to get appropriate diagnosis...lost my job, almost lost my marriage, currently on disability....funny thing is, once last year my TSH levels got up to 9.0 and I never felt so good...energy all over the place...don't know what happened but got it back way down...I take 120 mg. of Armour thyroid. I'm tired of being so overweight. Any suggestions? Tried T3 (cytomel) didn't work so switched to Armour instead of Synthroid. I weigh the same as when I had surgery....over a period of 10 years I gained about 5-6 lbs. a year. HELP!

I scoured the Internet in preparation for my full thyroidectomy, and boards such as this really scared me. So for anyone who was in my boat: my surgery was over 6 months ago. I've not gained a pound or seen any other change. Except now I take a pill every day and I have a scar. My doctor says my levels are perfect. So don't worry and remember, it's generally only people who have a problem who post, and one can find anything on the Internet.
