I had a total thyroidectomy due to Hyperthyroidism/Graves Disease in mid Oct 2016 - I have my 6 week post op appointment with my Endo today actually but have been exercising (and i mean EXERCISING..I have been running about 5 miles 3x's a week and walking up to 5 miles the off run days and having only 1 rest day) and have managed to only gain about 8lbs post op) ... to me, that is good considering I was HYPER prior and lost a lot of weight that I wasn't meant to lose to begin with. It's all about balance. You can't not work out..even if you're dead tired, you HAVE TO. Yes med dosage is everything but restrict carbs and sugar as much as possible (allow yourself a cheat day or two a week, won't kill you!) and just be as active as possible. If you used to work out hard before, up it a notch...What i'm finding is activity you were at, at your healthiest should be upped a bit post op once you get the green light to work out. It just helps your mental and even tho you might not see the lbs decrease, a lot of it is MED WEIGHT ... you're carrying it because of meds not because you're losing control. Control what you can, be positive, and just live your life! This disease sucks but it's controllable if you really care and a realistic. you MUST WORK OUT!!!!!! A lot.
