Thank you so much for saying this! I AM SCARED TO DEATH of being overweight after my upcoming thyroidectomy. It's now even effecting my job - all I do all day is research "TT and weight gain" and get myself so depressed I can't even think. THANK YOU FOR POSTING YOUR POSITIVE STORY!!!

I was also very concerned about weight gain after my thyroidectomy.  I had a total thyroidectomy 6 months ago (after being diagnosed with Graves disease in February 2012).  I am a 28 year old female. I gained about 5 pounds in the first 3 months following the surgery. I'm now back to my normal weight and have also gained back most of the muscle mass that I lost due to the Graves. My thyroid levels are now in a normal range (I'm on 92 mg levothyroxine/day).  I exercise 5x/week and eat a healthy, balanced diet.  The hardest part has been adjusting to my new appetite; I find that I am rarely hungry.

My doctor has recommended a thyroidectomy for benign multinodular goiter. I am VERY WORRIED about weight gain after i have this procedure as about 90% of these posters said they gained weight. I need this surgery as the goiter is compromising my airway and i have trouble breathing, but i CANNOT gain anymore weight. I am at 220lbs and 5'8". Any information you can offer would be helpful.

Thanks!

I originally had a multinodular goiter and had it for years because I didn't want to have surgery.  Well, in 2010, I changed doctors and had a needle aspiration performed. Results showed a "grey" area - never good to hear that. So we agreed on surgery. I preferred to have a complete thyroidectomy, but was advised that I should see what the results show. Doctors felt, why remove the thyroid if there was a chance the right side was okay. Had the prominent side of the goiter (left side) removed and sent away for further testing. Result - thyroid cancer. Second surgery was performed. UGH!

Weight gain has been a major issue for me following the surgery. I am active, I eat healthy and it wasn't making any sense to me. I spent a year testing and researching. Finally, found out that the good foods that I was eating was working against the effect of the Synthroid. The medication was not being fully absorbed. Yes, I was taking it on an empty stomach, first thing in the morning.

Who knew, that eating two hours after taking it AND the healthy foods that I was eating, would be an issue.

This has to be the WORST discussion board I'v ever seen. I had my thyroid removed almost a year ago and I looked at this site before I had my total thyroidectomy and it totally freaked me out, I thought I was going to gain tons of weight, get foggy brain and just over all be a different person. DONT GET ME WRONG - I understand that the people on here cant help what they are going through, BUT anyone reading these posts should know that you DONT know these people, you dont know if they are taking the synthroid regularly, you dont know if they are taking it on an empty stomach...you flat out dont know. SO from my personal situation, I have not gained any weight at all... not at all. and anyone who needs to have their thyroid removed, OR are thinking about it, do not get scared because of posting like on this site. The only bad thing that happened to me, was that during surgery my laryngeal nerve was tampered with and as a result i had trouble with my voice for 1 month. SO, to sum this up, from a positive expereience , I have not gained any weight at all, and In actuality i feel more like my old self... :-D

by 2 months post op I did gain 15 lbs. I have not been doing anything major but started to walk 30 minutes 4 times a week and cut down food intake especially carbs but have not lost a pound. I wonder if a very restricted diet and vigorous exercise would make any difference.
