Hi! My son is 3 years old and has underbite. We are living in Ankara. Have you found a non-brace treatment in Turkey or any other solution? I would be pleased if you inform me.

I had an underbite as a child that was fixed several times with extensive head gears. Every time I hit a growth spurt it would come back. I finally had major jaw surgery that fixed it when I was 22. I would take your child to see a good orthodontist and see what they suggest. I am so glad I had the surgery by it was extremely painful so if they can fix it without the surgery that would be much better.

Hi, sorry for the delay in replying. My son went through an awkward stage of having loose tooth and it took forever to grow back. I have had a bit of a set back. One of his new tooth has grown back and it is in the underbite position once again. I don't know if we didn't do enough exercises or as Dr Mahony explained, his jaw had a growth spurt. It's really frustrating! He has referred me to a specialist for a new procedure called miniplates (bollards) for class iii but I am really undecided as to wether I will go ahead with this as it is another procedure. If you google "minplates class 3" you can find some information on but I have put him through so much already but I could use the same argument for it. Really don't know what to do.

Hi there! Thanku for your update! Sorry to hear that the underbite is still a issue and you now have to make the tough decision of what to do next. isnt being a parent hard... all these decisions we have to make and sometimes its just not clear which is the best decision! Handbook please!!!!
I had a look at the bollard miniplates you suggested. I guess it has its positives as opposed to the traditional headgear which can only be worn overnight and the bollards provide 24 hrs of treatment so to speak and you can hardly notice when they are in. however i totally appreciate the concern re surgery and ur child having the plates anchored into bones.... seems invasive and painful. how long would they be in for? is the kind of thing they wear throughout their teens as well/while their jaw is growing? i guess the other consideration is that if all treatment fails the only other option when our kids are older is surgery anyway. everyones journey is different and i would never want to tell anyone what to do. i also dont have all the information to make a fully informed decision, but if the myobrace wasnt working for my daughter i think id definitely try the headgear or the bollard miniplates, as at the end of the day it isnt as invasive as the surgery they would have if no treatments work and they dont have to wait as long and go through their teen years with it etc. is the headgear an option and if that doesnt work would the bollards be an option after that?

my daughter just got her first myobrace (the infant trainer), its still early days with her even learning to keep it in her mouth (she is 2.5yrs).dentist said to just take it slow as she is still young and more options will become available when she is a bit older.... like the other myobraces and planas direct tracks.
i have taken her to see an osteopath several times and that has been really beneficial in releasing all the tightness around her jaw. id would notice the difference when i was breastfeeding her, she would latch on much better after a treatment. the osteo happened to have similar dental issues, so she has been good to talk. She also said releasing the tightness positions and supports the proper growth of the jaw/head etc. Could be worth considering for your son? can i ask does your son have a complete underbite.... all the teeth under the tops ones? it seems to only be the front teeth that are in the wrong position with my daughter (so most of her top side teeth are in front of the bottom ones and her front top teeth are behind the bottom teeth) not sure if really makes a difference, but just thought id ask.
i hope you can find some clarity with making your decision :)

Hi! Thanks for your reply! The specialist said we would be looking at a one year treatment and I agree with you, once they are in, it is very inconspicuous and doesn't rely on the child to be compliant. He said they have had great results and he performs one a week.
I also agree with you.. a small procedure now to fix the problem doesn't seem as bad as jaw surgery later. I will let you know if we do decide to go ahead.
In regards to his bite, prior to any treatment, the bottom teeth were completely in front, but sides were in normal position. Then with his Planas Tracks, his top teeth were almost over his bottom but since the new tooth, it appears as though one of them (at least) is behind the bottom again. Waiting to see where the second front tooth will grow.
Thanks for the communicating with me.. Nice to have someone who can relate with what I am going through. Take Care!

My son had an underbite ever since he had teeth. My orthodontist suggested braces when he was 13 at a consult. I had noticed over the years that his underbite was becoming less extreme as he got older, so we decided to wait on treatment to give his jaw more time to develope. He is now 15 and no longer needs braces. As a dental hygienist, I see braces being put on children routinely. I don't know if our case is unique, but sometimes letting nature take it course is not a bad thing. It use to be kids had braces in high school, now it's younger and younger. Food for thought....

If your child has under bit get it checked out right away. I have one and my son does. Not one dentist said anything to us when he was younger. He has surg to have 4 front top teeth removed from going to bed with juice so they decayed. They never said anything abt underbite. Needless to say nothing worked to fix it in HS now he is preparing for surg this year. His is not about his teeth it is due to lower jaw growing faster then upper jaw. No oral surgeon will do surgery until they are 18. No sooner cause they are still growing. The surg is min 30,000 dollars not including if they need to stay in hospital. Because this is effecting him with jaw pain and lock jaw Ect his medical health insurance is actually covering it. So if surgery is needed the surgeon should send papers to health insurance to try to get approval.
