I have a friend who used to use heroin til she was 33 weeks. She is now almost 36 and has not used since. Used maybe 2-3 times every wkend to every other wkend. Never shot it up, either. Will it show up in baby's drug screening or no? She is freaking out and needs answers. She doesn't want to talk to her dr.

Hi there

Yes, opiates during pregnancy can lead to complications in the child. She should share opiate use with her doctor. In any case it will show up during screening. She and her baby will receive proper treatment. Opiates also transfer through breastmilk, so, it is prudent she shares such info.

Good luck

She says she only used for about a month or two. And only when she needed something for back pain. Can this cause as much harm to the baby as using every day? Like I said before, she only used 2-3 times every wkend to every other wkend. And she snorted it. So out of all the times she probably used it maybe 20-25 times in small amounts. A guess from what she has told me. Just enough to ease the pain, but nvr to be "messed up" because she wanted to be or wanted to shut out the world. She regrets doing it and wishes she nvr came to it but she couldn't bear the back pain and her drs would not do anything about it. She has called plenty of times and they say the same thing, giving her the same instructions. Is there a chance of withdrawls to the baby or no?

It all depends on her pregnancy stage and then amount of opiate use. The doctors will be the best judge in this case. She MUST share this information with concerned doctors. Doctors will be better prepared if she shares info. Having said that I understand that she did not mean to harm her baby. Love, light and blessings for both of them.
