Hi guys,

here is the answer our health expert sent us after we asked him about your problem.

If your vagina or vulva is irritated by seawater, there are several steps you can take to prevent this from happening in the future:

  1. Wear a bathing suit made from a breathable material, such as cotton or a moisture-wicking fabric. This can help reduce the amount of friction between your skin and your bathing suit, which can cause irritation.

  2. Rinse off in fresh water after swimming in seawater. This can help remove any salt or other irritants that may be lingering on your skin.

  3. Use a barrier cream or ointment. Apply a thin layer of petroleum jelly or a similar product to the vulva before swimming to create a barrier between your skin and the water.

  4. Avoid swimming during certain times of the month. The vagina and vulva may be more sensitive to irritation during menstruation.

  5. Try swimming in a pool instead of the ocean. Chlorine can also cause irritation for some people, but it may be less likely to irritate the vagina or vulva than seawater.

Hope this can help.

Hi everyone. I am 24 years old and have had this issue for as long as I can remember but I’ve finally found a solution. There is a cream you can buy called vagisil. If you’re from the U.K. you can get it at boots. It contains a little bit of lidocaine so it numbs the area. Apply it to the vagina and insert your finger with some of the cream on to make sure it goes in properly. Do this before going in salt water and it should stop the stinging. This stuff has saved me! I’ve always stung in the sea or salt water pools but been fine in freshwater. I also experience stinging sometimes on my period. The vagisil allows me to go in the sea pain free :)

I am having the same problem. My vagina stings every time I go in seawater. My sister used to have this problem too but it’s gone now. I love the ocean but hate the stinging sensation. Please let me know if there is a cure. I wish I could be more of a help to all the girls my age who are being deprived of the ocean. Wishing everyone luck!
