I have heard that one woman was undergoing treatment with prednisone and methotrexate for vasculitis. What scarred me is that I have heard she developed painful vesicles in her mouth. I think she is diagnosed with Behcet’s disease, and they said it is form of vasculitis. Can you give me an explanation, say is this situation possible? I would like to hear more about vasculitis, and its type Behcet’s disease.

There is no specific Behcet’s test to diagnose this type of vasculitis. Consequently, the diagnosis is based on the occurrence of symptoms and signs that are compatible with the vasculitis. It is quite clear when doctors found out presence of certain features that are particularly characteristic for vasculitis such as oral or genital ulcerations. Then it is needed to done elimination of other possible causes of the patient’s presentation. Beside this, it is recommended, whenever is possible to proof diagnosis of vasculitis by biopsy of an involved organ. An international group of physicians has established a set of guidelines to aid in the classification of Behcet’s patients that suffer of this type of vasculitis. This is done for conducting research in the disease. The criteria put forth by the group include recurrent oral ulceration with at least three occasions in a year. In addition, a patient must also meet two of the following four criteria for Behcet’s disease as a type of vasculitis: recurrent genital ulcerations, eye lesions, uveitis or retinal vasculitis, and skin lesions or positive pathergy test.
