I totally agree, I was vegetarian for quite a long time doing all the right things, very strict on my protein and iron intake, all my vitamins etc... educated myself thoroughly, turns out not everyone is capable of being vegetarian due to all ranges of medical reasons, metabolism etc... I damn near ended up blind. Doctors opinion is very much needed also medical checks continously to monitor your health is advisable. I am actually healthier and fitter as an omnivore.

My parents raised me on a vegetarian diet, along with my brothers and sister. We are all alive, and extremely happy and healthy. I stress that you research how to properly get all the nutrients you need on a vegetarian diet before you jump into it, though. It's mostly about educating yourself. I don't feel that I've been malnourished or slighted by not eating meat in my life. Make sure you prepare yourself before jumping into it. Read up.

You did in fact say " it is statistically proven that vegetarians are leaner and fitter" ...which is IMPLYING that you are referring to ALL vegetarians. At least that is how I also understood it.

I have a nephew who is almost blind and a strict vegetarian for a while now. I stumbled upon this site reading all the negative effects associated with vegetarian diets done "wrong". I tried when younger too and caused health issues which went away once reintroducing a blanced meat inclusive diet. I dont have the patience or time to do it right. Human brains take huge amounts of protien to fuel. Notice how humans evolved after giving up the vetetarian only diet. Probably explains the blank stares ya get when trying to ask the simplest of questions in a health food store :o. I hate meat and what it is but I need it now. Somewhere along the line my ancestors developed K-9 teeth as well. To develop meat tearing teeth takes a very very long time, unfortunately the rest of our body evolved as well and now demand easily assimilated protien rich fuel to keep up. If you do it right and make very sure your getting all the complete protiens needed your fine. If not..... well, do some research. Thats exactly what im doing to figure out whats with my nephews eyesight. Oh he started to have mental problems as well. After seeing a nutrionalist then going on a mega supplement routine that went away. Everyone is different. he was extremely smart in school doing all the extreme math/physics kids get now a days without trying. Now, post vegeterian? I dont understand him 99 percent of the time. No one does. He probably requires mega protien to power a highly developed brain. Again, I urge you to research everything. Dr.'s have no magic formula. We have all the information they ever read at our disposal. Good luck, I have to go back to reading the facts on eyes and diet. Take care.

I agree with Mindy. People are so uneducated about what they put in their bodies to begin with. If you do your research and expand your mind you will realize the benefits of any healthy diet. You do not need to eat meat products to be healthy. I think if you really want to be proactive about your diet, find out where your food comes from, is it organic? Are the foods that you are eating pumped with steriods and antibiotics? Seriously. I don't think its right to judge people on what they eat . IT's a life choice. I think if your daughter wants to be come one, do the research and make sure she is getting all the nutr. that she requires. Suppliments are a great way to do that, but if you have a well rounded diet you'll get those vit. that you require.

Get new parents who will agree. From what I read here Indian parents seem a most suitable choice, at least 80% of them.

i'm an early teenager and i have been on a vegetarian diet for 5 years coming up soon. I agree that if you don't eat the right nutrition being a vegetarian can be a big risk and can cause some health problems.
i really suggest going to see a doctor of some kind before deciding on becoming vegetarian- i'm very pale and skinny and i most of the time feel drained of energy and tired suddenly, that is probably because i forget to take my tablets the majority of the time.
stick to lentils, beans, and if you want to ease into the depriving process- become a pescetarian to see how well your body handles the lack of meat.
good luck and i strongly suggest that you do become a vegetarian, we can always to with more in the world

Done correctly, a vegetarian diet can have a host of health benefits. In some cases, following a vegetarian diet can even reduce or reverse your risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, hypertension, and other chronic health problems.
