Hi, folks. When I always do the blood test, my doctor asks for sedimentation to be done. Last time I was doing this, there was increased sedimentation. I would like to know what this value can tell us. I would really be grateful if someone could tell me something about this. Thanks.

Hello. Erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) is the value at which red blood cells precipitate in a period of one hour. This only shows that something is happening in organism. The units are mm/h. Normal value for men is 10 and for women 15 mm/h. It can be little higher with age. If the ESR is three figure number, then cancer is suspected. ESR alone is not enough for giving diagnosis. It can only be viewed with other laboratory parameters and other diagnostic procedures. C-reactive protein is even a better mark than ESR since it gets increased earlier, only 6-8 hours after the inflammation. I hope I’ve helped.
