An Echocardiogram is non invasive and painfree procedure to look at your heart. Very similar to what they do to look at babies in pregant mothers. They will put gel on a probe and rub it over your chest, ribs and slightly below your breast bone. You will feel no pain except a bit of pressure. Occasionally, they will start an IV to inject a contrast to "light up" your heart borders (usually done if you are large and if they are having trouble getting a good view of your heart). Another reason why they may start an IV is if they are concerned about a small hole going from right side of your heart to the left...one in which blood could bypass your lungs. In this case a "bubble study" would be done. Let me say that most Echocardiograms do not involve an IV unless the above is needed.
