I rolled my foot in a pair of sandals and broke my 5th metatarsal, walked on it 11 days before going in.. It is a Transverse non displaced base of 5th metatarsal Jones fracture. 1.6cm . I was splinted for two days then casted with non weight bearing. The doctor has me coming back at the 5 week time and in his notes say he will remove cast and get new xrays and reelvaluate.  Does anyone know if they normally recast or put in walking boot? Its been so hard on my other foot it almost feels sprained and my shoulders ache getting myself up and down . I hate it so much but almost fear Ill be recasted.

Hello.

Jones fractures can be challenging to heal due to the limited blood supply to the area. The treatment approach may vary depending on several factors, including the severity of the fracture, your overall health, and your doctor's recommendations. Here are some possibilities:

  1. Non-Weight Bearing Cast: It's common to initially treat a Jones fracture with a non-weight bearing cast to allow the bone to heal without the pressure of body weight. This helps ensure proper alignment and healing.

  2. Follow-Up X-rays: After a few weeks, your doctor may schedule follow-up X-rays to assess the progress of the healing process and the alignment of the fractured bone.

  3. Change in Treatment: Depending on the results of the follow-up X-rays and the assessment of your doctor, the treatment plan may be adjusted. This could include continuing with the cast, transitioning to a walking boot, or exploring other options like surgery.

  4. Surgical Intervention: In some cases, especially if there is poor alignment, delayed healing, or complications, surgery may be recommended to stabilize the fracture using screws or other hardware.

  5. Reevaluation: Your doctor's note about "reevaluating" at the 5-week mark suggests that they will assess your progress and decide on the most appropriate next steps.

It's entirely possible that your doctor may transition you from a cast to a walking boot if they determine that your fracture is healing well and that it's appropriate for you to begin partial weight-bearing. However, the decision will depend on your specific condition and your doctor's judgment.
