Hello! My mother had a cataract surgery last year. Her surgery went well and without any complications. She recovered really fast after the surgery and returned to her everyday activities. I remember she had only mild discomfort for few days and I thought her problems were over. Yesterday she he told me she had cataract again. How is this possible? Would you advise a second cataract eye operation?

Hello! You mother most probably has posterior capsule opacification (PCO) which is often called the after cataract or the second cataract. The second cataract can develop months or years after surgery and it occurs when the back of lens capsule becomes cloudy and impairs vision. I would advise it since the treatment is simple and safe. It is a simple laser technique which lasts only few minutes and there is no need to stay at the hospital. The patient has to stay at the doctor’s office for an hour to make sure the eye pressure doesn’t increase.
