About me:
24 year old male. 5'9 about 220. I have always been very athletic and involved in sports.
History:
In 2004 While playing football I injured my right knee. I had caught a ball and there was someone to the right of me that I didnt see and I went to make a sharp cut because of the person in front of me and there was a very painful popping sound and then the guy to my right hit right into my right knee. I was told by our trainer that it was an MCL tear, although I am not really sure how much that should be trusted. Being that football wasnt my main sport I did the PT and that ended football for that year. Over the years I have always had knee pain on that side. In sports, walking, running, and stairs. Running and going up steps always seemed to be the worst. Sense that injury I have worn a brace during any type of sport, running, or working out at all. Over the years there were a few minor injuries that required me to stay off of it or stop running or working for no more than a week but, nothing overly serious. Oh and at about 13 I was diagnosed with arthritis (which appears to be very common to have at that age for the males in my family).
Current:
My entire life I have been blind in my right eye and about two and 1/2 years ago I became legally blind in my left eye (this will help explain what happened). I was walking down some steps at our home and when I was about three steps from the floor I kind of slipping off. I went to grab the hand rail right my right arm but due to a previous shoulder injury I wasnt able to hold on so instead of falling on my face I tried to jump off and land on my feet. I must have jumped unevenly and ended up landing all on my right leg. My entire knee buckled right and then left and again made a horrible popping noise and a massive amount of pain and I fell to the floor. I wasnt able to get up and it was extremely painful. I would have gone to the ER but I was home alone and I knew I was already due to see my Dr in a few days and to be honest I cant stand going to the ER. So from then on I stayed off of it as much as I could. I took over the counter anti inflammatory med and also iced it 20/20 every few hours while keep it elevated as well. Anytime I do walk on it it feels like its going to give out any second. I also have duck feet and Supination (I walk and run with my feet pointing out), I mention this because my right knee/leg keeps feeling like its pulling in at the knee which makes me even more unbalanced like I am going to fall to the right. I would have used crutches but because of my should injuries I couldnt. I went to the Dr and explained everything I just said above and after a 10-15 min examination he said he wanted to give me a cortisone shot and said it was a dislocated knee cap and that, thats prob what happened the first time I injured my knee as well. I had already had shots in my shoulders and they did nothing but I said okay, I figured it couldnt hurt. These once again did nothing and it even seemed like it made things worse. Well after about 2-3 hours I know theres generally some pain and what not but I was in the worst pain in my entire life, to the point where I was literally yelling out rolling around on the floor. Again I was home alone and didnt really have many options and thankfully after about 2 hours it went away but i dont know if this was some kind of reaction or indication of the injury or what. I am already in physical therapy three days a week and he told me on mon (this mon) to start going for my knee as well. Oh I ended up breaking my old brace a few weeks ago and the Dr gave me a new one that does seem to offer a little bit of help with the stability but not a ton and nothing else really.
Issue:
I have been around the medical profession my entire life and all of the information I have and know is telling me that this is no where near correct. There was no x-ray or mri done and its my understanding that these are supposed to be pretty much some of the first things that you do. I am pretty much lost at this point, I dont know if anyone else has even had that experience but everything I have seen and everything I know (which isnt much) is telling me that theres no way thats what is wrong and I am worried that its either much more serious or its only going to make things worse.
I am hoping that someone can offer some insight into this situation. Maybe you have experienced the same injury or type, or even if someone has had a dislocated knee cap and can kind of compare what they went through to this, I hate saying it but I am desperate and having already been involved with PT that is going terribly wrong I really dont want to do it twice. Any information, advice, or anything that anyone can offer would be great and if anyone has any questions or anything please ask. I tried to give as much information as I could but I know I can ramble and might make it hard to understand. Thanks.
