Healthcare professionals worldwide are advocating the use of probiotics for boosting our health. A recent study suggests that pregnant women should consume probiotics for lowering the risk of allergies in newborns. Read on to learn more about the study.

As per a recent study conducted by Dr. Eric Forno and his fellow associates at the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, babies whose mothers consume probiotics during pregnancy and the babies who consume probiotics early in life are less likely develop allergies.

The team of researchers analyzed 25 trials of probiotics supplements which were administered to pregnant women and babies within the first year of their lives. All the trials compared the results with a similar group comprising mothers and babies who were given placebo supplements. All the participants were given probiotics doses daily for a few months to a year. In some cases, the probiotic doses were administered more than once a day.

A questionnaire was formulated to track whether the children who were exposed to probiotics tested positive for common allergies such as pollen and peanut allergies. The study also tracked whether the children wheezed or exhibited signs of asthma.

The study found that babies who had been exposed to probiotics when still in the mothers’ wombs or those who were administered probiotic supplements after birth were 12% less likely to develop allergies subsequently in comparison to the children who were not exposed to any probiotics. The study also found that the risk of allergies was not reduced when children were exposed to probiotics only after birth. Another significant observation of the study was that there was no difference in asthma risk in children who were exposed to probiotics.

Pregnant women might ponder about the safety regarding the use of probiotics during pregnancy and lactation.

Numerous studies suggest that the use of probiotics by healthy pregnant women and lactating women does not pose any safety concerns.

Safety of Probiotics

Health professionals worldwide have been advocating the use of probiotics for the overall improvement of health. Probiotics have been known to boost our immune system, digestive and respiratory system and are also known to alleviate infectious diseases in children.

However, probiotics might be dangerous when consumed by people who have a weak immune system or a serious illness. People suffering from severe pancreatitis should absolutely avoid consuming probiotics.

Probiotics can, at times, also trigger allergic reactions. In some people, consumption of probiotics might cause a mild stomach upset, flatulence, diarrhea, or a bloated feeling. The use of probiotics might have different effects in different individuals. You must always consult your health care provider before using probiotics. If you are suffering from a serious ailment, your healthcare provider needs to be carefully monitor your health for any negative side effects associated with the use of probiotics.
