I was told to come back in a week for another u/s.

Hi Jen,
It is hard to respond when you're already dealing with professionals that can actually see what you're referring to. Still, it sounds as if they didn't explain anything to you.
At 6 or 7 weeks they expect to see a heartbeat. Is it uncommon for them not to? No. There are a number of reasons why they may not be detecting it. It could be the position of the uterus or your abdomen.
The concern is the size of the crown-rump. Once it gets to a certain size they expect to see a heartbeat.
Remember too, the age of the embryo is an educated guess. There are normal variations and the ultrasound can be off by a week or more.
Hopefully you'll have a better experience when you go back next week. I urge you, if you have any concerns or questions ask them.
Keep us posted and good luck.
