doubt you will read this but you miss the point. It is critical to accumulate stories like this (assuming we can get better at makin sure we are in fact describing the same thing) so that we all know it isnt in our heads and docs can see a pattern.

and as i think about this , it is possible that the ileocecalvalve hypothesis and this hypothesis might intersect...although to be more accurate the ileiocecal valve is ennervated from L1 as I recall

I have something similar, and have had this for many years now. for me it seems to be cramping in the large intestine, or at least intestinal movement related. So, I live with it and some days I do better and some night I even sleep through. I would say it is, at least for me, related to IBS. I wake up in the middle of the night around 3 most nights, and stay awake for a while usually, and have to lie on my left side most of the time, or on my back. If I sit or stand or move I feel fine, but if i lie down again I feel it. I have had constipation with hard stools for many years which led me to use more magnesium ( which may help you too) as well as herbs to move my stool. If I do not, then I would say I would not have a BM every day, so I have to. Even so, the movement in my intestines wakes me up every night. I also became a colon hydro therapist, and doing enemas and especially colon hydrotherapy is really, really helpful. I stuck to eating liquid food, which was soups and juices, and doing colon hydrotherapy, for one month, and that all helped so much. Every time I do a colon hydrotherapy session, I feel better for a few days. I have already been off gluten and milk products for many years now and yes, if I have gluten and or milk products, I feel worse. Increasing water intake and greens as well as really limiting sugar, caffein ( unless it is coffee in an enema which is fine) alcohol and other things is important for me. Eat all organic as much as you can too as GMO foods wreaks havoc on our intestinal tract. I am still searching for something that can help me more, as it is hard to cleanse all the time, but the more cleanses you can do the better you will feel. You can do fasting or eating limited foods - just like all veggies and fruit. Try to have it be smooth foods, or soups that you liquify and also juicing is great. I make a smoothie of greens ( lettuce kale arugula etc.), apples, ginger, dates, lemon, lime, mint and avocado almost daily and have gotten to really like that. If you have constipation another solution is to increase vitamin c until you have loose stools. Adding a good probiotic as well as fish oil is vital for me, and I am also trying MSM right now as someone told me to try it. I do regular parasite cleanses, and there are a lot of herbs out there which you can find to help with that. If you can tolerate charcoal then that help some people, but for me that is too constipating, unless I use C60, and also something like clay or psyllium husk is way too constipating for me, so watch out if you have constipation. but clay can be very good if you are more of a person with loose runny stools. I am not a doctor so do everything on your own risk or consult with your own health practitioner - and good luck! If anyone else has other ideas then I am all ears. I would even consider a fecal transplant if that was something that would help.

I want to add that I also had extensive testing, colonoscopy's and have been going to chiropractic care for years as well, which is of course very helpful, but has not helped me with this particular issue. Testing ruled out Sibo, which for a while I thought I had, but showed parasites. I do parasite cleanses a few times a year using herbs and essential oils.

This is exactly the issue I've been having. I'll wake up 3-4 hours after going to sleep with intense pain in my solar plexus, usually coupled with nausea and burping, and sometimes I'll end up having a bowel movement. The pain is usually worse if I'm sleeping flat on my back, but can happen in any position, and is not always relieved by the BM. But it almost always goes away once I fully wake up the next morning.
I've had blood work, barium x-ray, upper and lower endoscopy, and it all comes back clean, the doctor has no idea what's causing the intense pain.

I’m a gastroenterologist and recently my daughter begin having this problem. We have done endoscopy CT scans gallbladder evaluation and small bowel enteroscopy. All blood test so far basically negative. We are possibly looking at doing a laparoscopy. Today also doesn’t usually act like this. She does not have an ulcer. I’m not sure what’s going on but it doesn’t fit the clinical picture of irritable bowel syndrome. Her symptoms are a pain particularly at night waking her up. Perry umbilical sometimes epigastric. Associated with significant nausea. If we find an answer I’ll let the blog now

I just scanned the first and last page of comments... I don't see any solutions or diagnoses... isn't that odd!?!? But a bit reassuring, as many have had colonoscopies and endoscopies with no problem found... sort of rules out colon cancer... but I have had this for 6 months... almost exclusively at night lying down... but I do have a little discomfort during the day too... and seem to feel just a little bloating/swelling in abdomen... worse when I am lying on my left side. Blood tests/stool tests normal.
I had thought it might have been my use of MJ (small amounts nightly for many years)... but I stopped several months ago and still have the dull but aggravating discomfort/pain in my mid to lower abdomen... it is relieved when I get up and move around... antacids don't seem to help much, perhaps a little... bentonite clay seemed to help... and when I took a .5 Ativan, that helped more than anything... could this thing be a symptom of anxiety? Constant, unnoticed gut clenching? These days of insanity... that would not be too surprising! I also work out the abdominals pretty hard... and started somewhere around the time this discomfort started... when gyms opened again? So... that may be a cause...

Angle your body upside down. Much like how co2 escapes from a bottle, I’ve found I can alleviate trapped gas by being angled down.

It's 4 a.m. and I'm awake now because of this cramping in my lower abdomen

...Does anyone use a bi pap or c pap machine?I do and I'm wondering if I'm not simply swallowing air while I sleep.

My nighttime pain on right side and hip started a year ago. I also have IBS -C
The chiropractor has helped. My pelvic floor is tight as well . I do get relief when I get up and and empty bladder. I have had scans and blood work. Everything is ok along with colon checked. I do massage and heat across my pelvic floor that helps.
I also do an activa every am.
