So I've been having some issues with my body: https://www.steadyhealth.com/Unusual_period__now_spotting_a_week_before_period_is_due_t267420.html if you want the full story. My period's come a bit earlier than usual this month--somewhere between 5 days and a week early--I started spotting yesterday, full flow today. It's been abnormally heavy, I'm changing my tampon (super) about every 2 hours, which is unusual for me. I just had lunch, but now I'm feeling a bit lightheaded. I've been having pain in my left leg--on the outside of the thigh/lower hip, regular cramping and also cramping specifically on the left, as well as some lower back cramps in addition to my regular cramping (cramping is normal for me, the back cramps are not) My last period was strange-lighter than usual but with more and larger clots. I'm worried that there's something wrong. I was paranoid about pregnancy even though it was very unlikely (details in the link), I've also been experiencing breast pain since my last period. I want to write it off as just a weird period, but I'm worried. Could this possibly be a cyst or something? I have an appointment for a physical in 2 weeks, the wait is killing me because my body's been feeling off for weeks now.

Hi Emay,

Call your doctor, now.  Don't delay.

Not to scare you, but you might possibly have an ectopic pregnancy.  You have many of the symptoms.

If you feel very lightheaded and the flow doesn't slow soon, get a friend to take you to the hospital.  I don't want you driving and passing out.  Loss of blood can make you lightheaded.  If you get sharp cramps, call for an ambulance.

Keep me posted.  Good luck.

I'd taken a number of pregnancy tests-negative, as well as a blood test a week and a half ago that was negative. I wasn't sure if it was even possible for me to be pregnant, since I don't think I had sex (the only time I'd engaged in any sexual activity was a drunk incident a month and a half ago with some fooling around, I don't remember all the details, but he said we didn't have sex and I didn't feel like I had). I took an advil a few hours ago, the cramping's mostly dissipated. The flow has slowed down substantially as well--normal to light, there seems to be blood mixed with clear mucus?

I'm still at work, and I commute via public transportation to get home so I won't be driving. After moving here I haven't had an established physician yet--just recently scheduled an appointment for a physical in 2 weeks. Should I have one of my roommates take me to an urgent care clinic or something when I get home? Since I haven't had any proof that I'm pregnant, I don't want to seem like a crazy person.

Hi Emay,

Go ahead home and relax tonight. If you do get sharp cramps or heavy bleeding, you should see a doctor about this.

Testing early for a pregnancy is not always accurate. So, you may have had a negative test a week ago and actually be pregnant.

Just as an FYI, the signs of an ectopic pregnancy include:

Cramping
Abnormal bleeding
Breast tenderness
Nausea
Pain in the lower back or pelvis

Hope it helps.

The bleeding seems like a normal period now, I'm still a little freaked out. Is it possible it's just stress? I had my period last month after the incident at the right time, it was just a little off--more clots, but lighter overall (stress?) The breast tenderness that had been lingering since my last period seems to be gone, so maybe my hormones were just out of whack? As for the negative pregnancy tests, I was under the impression that blood tests are very accurate. The blood test was 5 weeks after the incident, so my understanding is that even with a late ovulation/implantation, etc. it still certainly would have shown then? The most recent home pregnancy test was a few days ago...

Is it possible that stress has screwed royally with my hormones? I haven't been able to relax about it, so it might just be feeding back into itself.

Yes, stress can play havoc with your hormones and it should have shown at 5 weeks.

Normal period = not pregnant.

Hope it helps.

Now on day 3 of my period, the bleeding has been very light, barely there. I've been having periods for nearly 10 years now, and other than the first few irregular years, this has been the strangest period of my life. They're normally 5-7 days with a regular flow (heavier, then gradually lighter), not heavy bursts and then almost nothing. I've been having the same occasional twinges on what I assume are my ovaries (alternating between sides) that I've had for a few weeks now. Since it's a holiday, short of an ER, there's no way I can see anyone, and I don't think this necessarily constitutes an emergency. I'm going to try to move up my appointment, or at least get in to see an NP sooner because this is really freaking me out.

Hi emay,

I'm glad the bleeding is very light, that's a good sign.

I don't think it is an emergency now either. Do get in to see your doctor as soon as you can.

Good luck.
