I have had them from time to time in both ears. Very rarely at the same time. Sometimes more painful than others. Eventually they run their course and usually (but not always) drain (Sometime an amazing amount of c**p comes out) then they go away. Sometimes I just get a bit of pain and think oh c**p... here we go again. I have found If I don't mess with it at all there is a pretty good chance it will not get big and it just shrinks and goes away in a few days. I have one now in my left ear. Can't sleep so here I am looking it up on the internet. I have never gone to a doctor. Today I read there might be a reason they keep coming back so I might actually go have it checked out. I have had a couple dozen of them over the last 30 years or so. Painful... no fun... but it does go away. I have never needed an antibiotic...

I have had problems with my left ear for around a yr now, it itches like crazy, this past month I went to the emergency room cause it hurt and my neck hurt with it. They said it was muscle spasms, yesterday my ear was completely shut, today I went to urent care and they said abcess, im on antibiotics now and I get it removed october 26th. Long wait, but I know patience is key, what's another month when this has been going on for a year now. I see horror stories about abcess return because it never was removed in first place on here and my advice, take antibiotic, get it removed and buy peroxide. Hope that helps

I had an abscess in my right ear caused by an infection from a small congenital hole I had in my ear. It was excruciatingly painful. A doctor sent me away with antibiotics saying they would kick in in 24 hrs. Firstly antibiotics will not work quickly when an abscess is that far gone. I ended up in a and e 12 hrs after doctor visit and had it drained by them cutting into my ear. The relief was instant. I then stayed on antibiotics for a week after to fight any left over infection. When it’s all cleared up will be having surgery to close the hole that the infection got into. It’s know as auricular sinus and many people have this hole.
