I didn't think anyone in the world was having this problem but me... Thank God!
I'm 25 yrs old. Sucdenly within the past year I've developed an allergy to alcohol??? No way!!
I make it to about half of one drink and there are a number of symptoms that occur.
*instant flu-like sick. so bad I must sleep it off.
*pain that goes into my left arm that are similar to a heart attack, so similar it could've been.
*brief black out during flu sick that made me bust my ribs on the bath tub trying to crawl back to the toilet.
*can't look at light, severe migraine.
*dry heaving
*effects lasting until the next morning and not stopping before sleep.

What is this? What's wrong with me?
I heard on a Reba episode the daughter Cheyanne says that she's been given some pill that's called Booze Away, she names it, but I didn't catch it. It gives a violent sick reaction to alcohol.... It's at least an idea. Please, I need answers! This is way worse than your average acid reflux.

I feel for you big time!...I have apparently and rather suddenly, at the age of 44, developed a similar aversion to alcohol! I get really sick after 1/2 glass: suffer from 'asian flush' (look this one up! red cheeks after a drink, and I am not of asian decent), dizzy, feverishly hot, feel like I am going to faint, feel like I am detoxing, so sick that I start to panick and cry and want to go to the hospital! Never in my life have I ever felt so unbelievably ill.

I think to myself, "WHAT the HE** is going on here!?" I was able to drink a LOT in the past, have a few beers here and there and then BOOM! No tolerance whatsoever starting last summer. I was having a few beers on a Sunday night with friends. Went to work the next afternoon and nearly fainted at work. Got very hot, flushed and nauseous. Felt like the WORST hangover I had ever had. Was fine in the morning, however....

As I tried to drink a few days later and over the course of the next while, I could tolerate less booze and was sicker faster. Now I am at the point where I cannot take a shot without having to lay in a cold tub of water! What fun is that? I have completely quit all alcohol, even cough syrup as I took some 2 wks ago for a chest cold and got just as sick!

I have had bloodwork done to check my liver. All clear. I am following up with more tests: billirubin blood count, pancreas, liver, HepC, as someone suggested it could be secondary reaction to an environmental issue that has shut down my system in this way. WOW!

Check out asian flush on the net. Lots of info about flush faces and some of the folks feel as we do. However, much of what they suffer from stops there: at the redness of the face. It seems that you and I have taken things one step further and need to look into our wellbeing further.

I've had this problem for about 4 yrs i'm 32 now and its not gettin any better. I went for a scope about 2yrs ago and was diagnosed with having H. pylori, not an ulcer. It is a bacterial infection that is located in your stomach and lower intestines. When I first had the treatment for it my reaction to alcohol had disappeared but a year, or maybe less, after it reappeared with a vengeance. No one understands what it is like they all think its just a hangover, I wish! The headache is unbearable you lie there and wait to throw up, then you try and drink water then wait to throw that up! After 24hrs you can finally eat something...NIGHTMARE. I spend last news year eve with a basin beside me and I also ended up losing out on a mates wedding because of it. Went on another course of med's for the H. pylori to no avail, one thing that seems to work sometimes is ZOTAN. My GP says that I should stay on the Zoltan but I'm not in favour of long term use of medication....any suggestions would be welcome.

My reaction to alcohol is also very severe. I feel very groggy and have trouble with my short term memory. I also feel flushed and nauseous.
I have this reaction even if I just smell alcohol and it lasts for 5 days.

Advil and pecid ac don't eliminate the reaction but they help a little with the symptoms.

I have similar symptoms. I don't feel aweful the next day but if I drink two beers I get a intense sinus headache that radiates into my neck and then i feel really sick. I'm thinking it is our bodies way of telling us enough is enough?

I didn't think I would find anyone else who experienced the same thing as me. I've never had a bad reaction to alcohol until this December when I was at my cousin's house, and I had a few sips of whiskey sour. I got extremely hot, and felt weak and like I was going to throw up. Also, I felt a tightness in my neck and shoulders. It's hard to describe, but I really felt like I was going to die. I didn't know why this happened, and figured it wouldn't happen again. And it didn't the next few times I drank. Just recently it happened again though, when I had vodka and coke. I only had not even a shot, and got the same symptoms. The symtoms lasted for hours, but were gone the next day when I woke up. Does anyone know what is causing this? It seems like it happens only when I drink hard liqour, but not when I drink beer or wine.

The people who are describing an immediate reaction to just a few sips of alcohol are probably experiencing "asian flush".

The ones with the super bad "hangovers" are talking about another problem.

Im no Doctor but i have been expriencing syptoms similar to those ascribed to "asian flush" im not even remotely asian and i dont "flush" but i do experience almost every other symptom. From my reading your liver produces and enzyme ALDH thats designed to break down alcohol to basically vinegar. If that enzyme is not being produced one will begin to experience symptoms which include but are not limited: hot flashes, heart palpitations, dizziness, nausea, extreme fatigue. All within a few sips of alcohol. Im currently working with my Dr. and he noticed that my ALT (another enzyme made in the liver) are really high. Still dont know why but i am working with my Dr until i find out whats wrong.

the bad "hangovers" may also be related to these enzymes, but i personally have not experienced these uber hangovers.

ohhh I can so relate to all these posts - Last night was a classic example - I had 2 gins was feeling happy and having a great night ... next thing BANG .. joint pain, shivering unbearably cold like BAD flu - I reacted like this once before to red wine and thought it was just the tanin or something - seems to be happening all the time now - whenever I drink - its awful and calls a quick end to fun times with friends _ When this occurs I need to get home and wrapped up in bed quickly or can hardly function - I am a 49 yr ols woman HELP

Yep....I am in the same club.

I am 50.....used to binge drink when I was in HS, college, and
later I would drink off and on.

Always had pretty bad hangovers which kept me from drinking more..
I could only drink on weekends so I had time to recover for school or
work on Monday.....so I quess the bad hangovers are a blessing in
some ways.

But gosh I still love sitting on restaurant patios having a few drinks
with friends or having a beer at a football tailgate or at a concert.

But lately 2-3 drinks makes me sick for days.

Right now I am still not 100% from 2 margaritas and a beer
almost 8 days ago!

8 FREAKIN DAYS AGO!

Doctors are gonna just tell ya to quit drinking....it's the easiest
advice for them to give.....it's a sure cure and they dont have to
investigate any further.

So I quess that's what I'll have to do because 3 drinks isn't worth
a week or more of hell.

Lemme know if the "magic pill" is invented....until then I'll be at Starbucks!....lol

im 26 and used to drink like a fish in university, but as of 6 months ago, even a small amount of alcohol has left me feeling brain fogged/cognitively impaired and flu like for 2/3 days...

the doc has called it silent migraines and put me on propranolol - with no effect as of yet .... but iv also read that exaggerated hang over is related to lyme disease or similar diseases and possible ibs - not sure iv been exposed to any of those though.

deep down iv felt like this might be a blood or hormone thing ...but thats just a guess/feeling ....

ANYONE GOT NEAR A CONCLUSIVE DIAGNOSIS?

Im so glad I found this, I thought I was the only one!
When I have even just one drink it makes me have flu-like symptoms, I shiver uncontrollably for hours. I am sick all night, have an upset stomach and unable to sleep. The next day I have a headache all day and feel awful.
My friends are always trying to get me to have a drink and they think I am very boring! I am 31 now but used to drink without these problems when I was younger.
I asked my GP today but she had no ideas and told me to look it up on the internet.
I shall keep my eye on this subject and hope we will all get some answers.
Take care everyone.

I am 21 years old and have been experiencing a similar thing for about 5 years on and off. There is no rhyme or reason with it at all. There are nights where I have drank large amounts of alcohol and mixed everything and woke up feeling fine and then days where I'll have a few glasses of wine and I'll be sick as a dog. It's very frustrating because I'll drink a decent amount (like any 21 year old) but become VIOLENTLY ill the next day and NO ONE can understand why. I'll get an excruciating headache and throw up bile (sometimes strange looking) NON-STOP sometimes 5 or 6 times a day but it's so much more than I can describe. It's sounds exaggerated but it makes me want to die, anything to take away the misery of it. I just try my best to sleep it off but it lasts the entire day, sometimes extending into fatigue and general discomfort the next day. I've had an upper endoscopy done and all they've found is some acid reflux. No doctor wants to hear me out because the just tell me to "stop drinking." I'd love an explanation. It almost feels like my body is fighting something off, or alcohol triggers some kind of terrible reaction, but it only happens 2/3s of the time. Why can I drink and be fine sometimes and not other times?

I get this weird intermittent intolerance to even tiny amounts of alcohol.

I'm comforted to read that I'm not alone, though I notice that there don't appear to be ANY answers!

Basically, sometimes, I drink a very moderate amount of alcohol, and the next day it makes me feel like I'm going to die, while at other times a larger quantity has no ill effects.

The symptoms I get are:

Weakness - peculiar, terrible, awful weakness; like something very bad is going on inside you.

Headache - a weird indescribable constant aching, like 'flu.

Joint pain - knees, wrists, neck, waist.

Intolerance to light (eg daylight, other bright lights).

Intolerance to sound - also, sudden sounds, even if they're not too loud, can make me jump out of my skin, like my nerves have received a terrible shock.

Itching.

Awful mental malaise feeling truly like I am going to die. This is no joke - I feel so bad that quite rationally I think I'm going to die.

The weirdest thing about tall this is that sometimes I can drink quite a few drinks and feel fine the next day (a bit muzzy, but really not too bad and I just get on with the day)... BUT SOMETIMES I can drink one small bottle of beer of 2.7% vol. strength, and the next day I have the devastating symptoms I describe above.

Once I had ONE SIP of wine and had these symptoms terribly all the next day.

I have tried to isolate the cause of this weird "sometimes get nothing, sometimes feel like dying" and there seems no pattern whatsoever. It doesn't vary with having eaten properly, etc., or anything I can identify.

WHAT IS GOING ON? DOES ANYONE KNOW THE ANSWER?

Although I feel bad that everyone that has posted experiences these horrific reactions, it's good not to be alone in this! I am 29, used to be able to drink anything from beer to tequila, now even a little sip of anything turns my stomach inside out. I get horrible headaches, feel dizzy and completely unbalanced, get truly unbearable stomach aches, nausea and vomiting, and spend hours in the bathroom. Twice it has been so uncontrolable that I have had to go to the emergency room for dehydration. As if that was not weird enough, the reaction is worse if I go to sleep after drinking. I wake up 2 - 3 hours after with uncontrollable symptoms.

I have gone to 2 different gastroenterologists already. The first one did an upper GI and found erosion in the lining of my stomach, prescribed a daily pill and that was that. I went to a second one because, even though now I won't drink anything as I am too afraid of the reaction, I don't think it is normal. When I explained my concern he told me not to drink, that it was not necessary, and that was that. Can you believe that?!?!?!

I am an internet addict ;-) , so I started to look online to see what I could find and it is scary. The Mayo Clinic lists this reaction as a possible sympton of Hodgkin's Disease which is a very scary thought. I just hope I can find a doctor that truly takes the time to get to the bottom of this. I wouldn't wish this feeling on anyone!!!

I'm 16 years old, nearly 17, and I have the same reactions. At first I'm fine with it, but after a few sips, I feel bloated and like theres air trapped in my stomach, after a few other drinks, I'm throwing up constantly, dry heaving, chest pains and other flu-like symptoms.

I've only ever gotten drunk twice in my life, first time I was okay uptill I tried to sleep, I started to vomit, but I only did once, the second time was recently, I vomitted constantly, about 5-6 times..

I would've thought it was my IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) and weak bowels that had to do with it, maybe i'm allergic to alcohol, but I do get nights where I'd just randomly wake up in the middle of the night with the same pain, this was way before i even started drinking, and I'd just throw up a lot..

Recently I've been nearly passing out, I was on the bus, sweating cold sweat, feeling light headed with pain in my stomach and feeling numbness all over, I had to run off the bus 'cause I threw up my lunch.

This happened again a week later except I didn't throw up 'cause I had not eaten that morning.
I should really go get a check up, but most the doctors are useless here...
