Some pepole will experience intense facial flushing after having even small amounts of alcohol. These symptoms are most common in those with an oriental / Asian background. Other side-effects of fluttering of the heart (palpitations, tachycardia), sensation of heat, headache, tummy discomfort or a drop in blood pressure (hypotension) are related to high blood acetaldehyde levels.

Alcohol (ethanol) is broken down by liver enzymes within minutes. Conversion of ethanol to acetaldehyde requires the enzyme alcohol dehydrogenase. Acetaldehyde is then transformed to acetic acid ("vinegar") by the enzyme aldehyde dehydrogenase. If individuals can't break down alcohol easily, problems may occur if alcohol is consumed.

Hi, I'am 33 years old male and I've abused alcohol for many years. I started when I was approx. 16-17 years old and over time I drank more and more. At the beginning everything was okay, there was nothing special about how I reacted to alcohol. Things changed when I was approx. 26 years old. From that moment something has changed in the way my body reacts to alcohol. I have reaction to even the smallest amount of alcohol. The smell of it is enough to trigger this.

For example it allready happened to me after exposure to detergents, which contain an alcohol (eg. glass cleaner, floor cleaner, furniture cleaner), after exposure to the screenwash fluid in cars or after eating plain yogurt (it can contain small amount of alc.).

Symptoms include powerful mental and physical discomfort, anxiety and depression, massive problems with concentration and thinking, muscle cramps, pain in various parts of the body, shaking, skin appears dry, damaged especially on face and the outer parts of the hands, hair becomes dry and looks not healty, dameged, cold numb hands.

Symptoms are very severe persist for weeks and over time partially subside. This is a nightmare, it's immposible to live like that. The only thing I do is constantly thinking how to avoid sytuations where potentially I can have contact with alcohol.

I know that I'm an alcoholic and that is why I do not drink. But it's impossible for me to avoid all those situations where alcohol can be present. There must be some way out of this situation... I want to try drug called naltrexone but I have no idea if it will work.

If there is anyone who has had contact with anything like this, please let me know. Thank you and sorry for my english.

Tobias.

Hi Marie, I'm experiencing the same symptoms as you... Everything on the right side of my head, went to neurologists and got MRI and CT scans and bloodwork and everything came back clean but the problems haven't gone away. Have you figured out a solution?

This is exactly me! It happens all the time now for about the last three years. ...few drinks and BAM! Chills, shivering, body aches, bed. It's happened with beer, wine and scotch. I'm 46. I used to be able to drink all night and have lots of fun. Not anymore. Doctor is no help.

Your symptoms are just like mine,. I use to drink every weekend up to 8-10 beers on a Friday or Saturday over a few hours and not have a hangover. Then I started getting sick after a 2-3 beers. It took me a while to associate the sickness with the alcohol due to never having an issue before. First my joints start hurting, then my core or trunk, then come the cold chills followed by shivering and lots of pain. Tossing and turning and puking. When the chills go away I get hot and sweaty, just like a flu breaking and I am fine after about 6 hrs post last drink. This is after 2 beers.,
I am leaning towards the enzymes or the bacteria infection for my first visit to the doc. If anyone here has positive results, please post!!!

I’m 17 and not someone who usually drinks. I’ve had a few occasions now that when I consume alcohol I become dizzy and feel ill. The dizziness goes away after I eat lots of food and time goes by. If you all think it might be a lack of a certain enzyme then you might be right, I suffer form lactose intolerance which means my body fails to produce enough of the enzyme “lactase”. My body may also struggle to produce the enzyme required to process the alcohol.

This reply right here explained exactly how I feel and I’m not even 21 yet. Started drinking at 15 and it was basically 2 bottles of the cheapest liquor you could buy everyday of my life. And now this. It is sad. Tonight I took 2 shots and felt like I needed to rush to the hospital. Then I researched this stuff.
I need to just stop. But it’s so hard. ! :(

My boyfriend had a high intake of alcohol at the weekend. The next day he was puking blood. The following day he still feels ill and is having hot flashes. What could be wrong?
