Anything that drys the eyes out increases the desire to blink. Dry eyes is where Bleph usually starts 1 in 5 people. Keeping well hydrated helps. Cosufferer

Has anyone seen a neurologist for his condition? I see a dry eye specialist and a plastic surgeon for botox injections, but was wondering if a neurologist would be a better choice. If so, is there one that specializes in eye treatment. I just wonder if there is an underlying effect that my doctor's are not actually looking at for the cause.

My 10-year-old daughter had the eye widening and twitching - progressing to rolling, all uncontrollably. We went to a naturopath, who detoxed her from her kindergarten immunizations. This decreased the rolling some. We reduced the amount of gluten in her diet. This helped a little. The remedy that has appeared to work for us is the elimination of MSG and autolyzed yeast from her diet. When she does not consume, she is symptom free. When she partakes, depending on the amount, her eye will twitch and roll the next day. We were never diagnosed by an MD, but all of her symptoms led me to this post. I hope this helps someone who is searching.

I take NATURAL Beta Carotene, two pills in the evening, and three in the morning for blepharospasm (eye twitching): each pill is 25,000 IU. I had tried Botox, I tried going to a neurologist, I had an an MRI, yada yada yada --- Botox helped some, but too expensive because my insurance will not cover it --- no cause, no cure.

With Beta Carotene my twitching has all but been eliminated. If you decide to try this, be sure to purchase NATURAL Beta Carotene and not synthetically made. The brand I buy is "NOW" and I bought them online for about $13.00 for 180 tablets.

Because this supplement is not regulated by the FDA there are no guarantees or promises, of course. However, everything I've researched online says the NATURAL product causes no harm. NOW brand is a company that goes through a certification process for their products. Nancy

Nancy, I have tried a number of natural products to ease the blepharospasms and have not found anything I feel has helped enough, so I have resorted to the Botox injections with mixed results. I would prefer natural treatments. Please give an update; Did you continued with the Natural Beta Carotine and if so, did you continued to see improvements? maureen

Hi Steve my name is Kelly. I have had this constant blinking, eye squeezing for about two weeks now. It has gotten progressively worse in just two weeks. I'm going to an eye doctor tmrw, I'm all for natural remedies, I haven't taken any sort of medication for probably 4 1/2 years for anything, even an Advil. I hear u have a gret story and maybe some answers. If u could get back to me I would extremely appreciate it. Ill try almost anything! Thank you.

It is neurological, the root of problem is the brain not eyes. Of course, what is seen is abnormal movement in eyes, spasms ans often squeezing shut. She needs to see a Neurologist. Also as a 12 year sufferer of this I can say treat the dry eye that 99% time goes with this due abnormal blink reflex.. Aggressively. Our tear film is poor quality causing irritation & severe light sensitivity as well. I have for 5 years went from severe dry eye to mild using a product by Carlson called Moisture eye, it is salmon oil and borage oil, available at health food stores or online. It has helped decrease the light sensitivity and the feeling of gritty eyes which does help( not cure, there is NO cure). Light exercise also increase the oxygen to the brain which I have found helpful. I do get Botox A injections, they help give me ok to good time for about 6-8 weeks which for me is worth it! Vs. blindness ALL the time. Flax seed has also been helpful again with the dry eye that goes hand in hand with Bleph. Deep sleep and rest are very important, melatonin is a natural sleep enhancer. Sleep is the only time this condition gives us a break by the way. The Benign Essential Research Foundation in Beaumont Texas as a Bulletin Board for much needed support as this is a life changing, often disabling condition. There is also a fb group for blepharospasm and many for dystonia of which Bleph is a focal dystonia. Good that your sister has you for support!

Blepharospasm is a neurological condition. A focal dystonia, the problem is in the basal ganglion of your brain. Yes, a neurologist or a highly trained ophthalmologist would be more helpful and appropriate than a plastic surgeon.

Thank you, Nancy it sounds good. Unfortunately I have diabetes and HBP so I would have to speak with my PCP. I've had Blepherospasms for 19yrsand botox injections don't help anymore. But thanks for the info. Right now I'll try anything.
