Hi there,
For as long as I can remember my eyes always do this incredibly annoying thing where they involuntarily scrunch up under pressure. This happens more so when I'm hot or tired, but can happen anytime, say if the big bad boss talks to me about something specific, if I am in an interview, talking to someone and feeling a bit shy, etc. It's meant I've actively never taken on receptionist jobs or anything where I've had to be face to face with general people in a slightly professional, under pressure manner!
Any suggestions what this is? Have you heard of it before? Anything I can do?! Thanks!

Hi, it sounds to me like you could have blepharospasm, or benign essential blepharospasm as it is sometimes called. This can vary quite a bit from person to person, from being mildly annoying to causing someone to become functionally blind. The choice of treatment is generally botox injections from a qualified practitioner. I'm not a doctor, but I have had blepharospasm now for 2 and a half years. It was diagnosed by a neurologist. A word of caution, if you go to a normal doctor chances are he/she will not have heard of it as it is very rare.

I've never come across anyone else except me that has experienced this so interesting to hear about your issues. I have very much the same thing. It started around 12 years ago (I'm not sure how or why) and was really bad for around 5 years, but has got slightly better over time. It is particularly bad for me early mornings when I'm tired or if I have a cold and the skin around my eyes feels sensitive. I wonder if it might be linked to sinus issues. As you say, pressure situations where you are on the spot often trigger it. It has been particularly embarrassing during early morning meetings when presenting and when having a professional photo done when I started a new job. Now I dread having a professional photo taken in case it happens again. So embarrassing as you can't really explain why it is happening to anyone. Hope you've managed to find ways of coping with this!
