Help! I am 40 and female. Two weeks ago, I had a pretty nasty stomach virus (which everyone in my family had). A week later, I was throwing up again--I think I had another stomach virus (but no one else got it this time). Ever since the second one, I have been really bloated and constipated. What can be causing this? I am really scared that something is seriously wrong.

You had typical stomach flu (gastroenteritis) with the usual symptoms, such as vomiting and I believe you had the abdominal cramps, diarrhea, fever and a logical consequence of such conditions- weight loss.
We all know that stomach flues usually go away without any medical treatments after day or two, and they seldom come back so I think what is now happening to you might be the consequence of the stomach flu you had.
Constipation have many symptoms which may be the sensation of needing to have a bowl movement and then, when in the bathroom you realize there is nothing to pass, or in turn, when you have already experienced a bowel movement you have a feeling there is more to come.
The hard and dry stools of constipation occur when the colon absorbs too much water and this happens because the colon’s muscle is slowly contracting causing the stool to move through the colon too slowly.
The common causes of constipation are: not enough liquids, the lack of exercises, medications, not enough fibre in diet etc.

And this is the same question that I am asking. Heather_2's answer is just a combination of the info generally available on the internet. Maya's and My question is different. We know we had a tummy bug, we just wondering is tghis normal and how to stop it, get rid of it. The constipation is not just a feeling of wanting to go, it is CONSTIPATION ie cannot go, at all. I've even had Psillium seed husk, baked beans, cabbage, prunes, and yes, a good amount of water. I excercise, I'm fit, I don't smoke, or have much alcohol. Just how to stop this constipation and terrible flatulence! Please reply someone that knows an answer to this PARTICULAR problem. Thanks all you helpful people!

Hey girl, my name is Ulrich. I know what you must be going through. My cousin has went through the same thing couple of years ago. But, it wasn't too complicated for her, and it ultimately passed on its own. I don't know why is bloated stomach caused in the first place, but what I can tell you is to go and see your doctor or a specialist because this problem in your abdomen might not be naive at all. Do blood tests and stool examination as well as full body examination just in case you have all the tests.

I have the same problem.

My 20 month old had it first. I told the pediatrician but he just gave me regular advice for constipation. Then 2 weeks later I developed the same problem. It is horrible and now I feel so bad for my baby. Finally his stool is back to normal, but I don't think I can handle it for 2+weeks.

I thinks its a virus. We eat fruit at least 3 times a day, drink juice, move constantly. The only change in lifestyle is we started drinking tap water instead of bottled water after hearing all the c**p about plastics!

Use Nature's Plus - Nature Cleanse. It has fibre and superfoods that directly heal and cleanse your stomach and gut. You will notices the difference right away but should continue for sometime, weeks or even moths with a day off now and then as it rebalances the bacteria in your gutn. It is the most cost effective programme I know of, the herbs and superfoods are the best and gentlest. I consider this the best medicine for all sorts of stomach/gut related issues. It also helps allergies, asthma and skin problems, as well as headaches caused by overtoxicity. It clears your skin too. You need to drink lots of water with it.

Can a 9 year old use Nature's Plus? She was sooo sick for a week with high fever and weakness. She ate very little and drank very little and has had lower stomach problems every since. The nurse at her school even questioned what was wrong with her. I was concerned that we had given her too much ibprofen during the fever and not enough liquids. She was taken to the doctor but given nothing for the flu like symptoms. It took everything out of her for 2 weeks and she only vomited once. They again told us it sounded like IBS, but why did it just appear after this illness? She has been very regular on bowel movements and eats just about anything you give her. She has lost approx 5lbs in 2 months and cannot eat without complaining of lower pain and thinking she may have to use the restroom. She is having bowel movements but nothing regular or anywhere near like she use to have. If anyone can give suggestions please let us know, I want my child back.

We just got back from the hospital with my 5.5 yodd after noticing she was becoming dehydrated after 2nd round with a 24-48 hr stomach bug (vomiting only). Everyone in the family had it and are basically fine now. After getting IV fluids in the ER (she WAS found to be extremely dehydrated with a combo of low blood sugar to boot), she was admitted for another 24 hours. Seems that with dehydration, the stomach can become averse to food. Maybe the same is true for the lower intestines. I would consider a run to the ER if you still can't keep food in it's right place or moving properly. Get your blood checked for toxicity levels. Just my opinion.

Hello i am also having the problem of major stomach problems following a stomach virus i have had for the past 5 days.  I had bad diarhea for 3 days and alot of "gas" that is going along with it.  Now it feels like major constipation!  And feels like its never going to go away.  Also i am having a "acid reflux" feeling that is so bad its making my teeth feel gritty? I know that sounds weird but a bad taste and weird acid indigestion coming up my throat is ACTUALLY making me brush my teeth hourly to get rid of that yucky feeling.  Is anyone else experiencing any or all of these things following this terrible stomach flu/bug??  HELP

After reading through this thread I am glad to know I am not alone with this problem, I am only 16 and on Monday I started with a stomach virus. It was mostly diarrhea and I was only sick once. On the Tuesday I was just getting rid of the bug with less runny and more solid stools. That afternoon I was feeling much better after feeling like I also had the flu and was sleeping all the time. I also had a few carrots with lasagne and wedges as I needed some food, but I only had a very, very small portion. But that night my stomach was hurting, I was thinking maybe it wasn't a good idea to eat something with tomato in it. But it has been three days since this bug I have not got rid of his stomach pain. But that is not all, I am constipated and I have been having food with fibre in; brown bread, weetabix and egg, egg probably isn't that good to make me feel better. I am worried because in 13 days it is my seventeenth birthday and I was hoping to have a meal out with my mum, but I don't want it to make me feel bad. I am probably being paranoid and it is most likely that it wont last for 13 days, but I would just like to be reassured that I am ok, or it will go soon. I have been drinking plenty of water, but I haven't been to see anyone about this. Only my mum and sister have been told as my dad and brother don't listen that much. Only my brother has had this bug but his was vomiting and as far as I know he has been eating fine. It could be that I am bigger than him, which could be a likely cause, and my mum thinks she has ibs. Also, when I say I am constipated, I mean there is NOTHING coming out. I feel the urge to, but all that comes out is gas, from both ends. Please could someone give me an explanation, I would be so thankful. Also, good luck to everyone else and I hope they get better soon.

Many of these cases might have been norovirus. One of the ways that the virus is so successful is that before you feel ill, it shuts down your digestion so that you keep everything inside your body. Then when the virus has used your cells to reproduce, it draws water into your intestines and also makes you nauseous. The result is that every gram that you then expel from either end contains billions of viruses. A few airborne droplets can settle and contaminate a surface for someone else to touch. This virus is amazingly good at spreading!

I am recovering from norovirus and have the problems described. I haven't puked for 40 hours now, but any food that I eat seems to stay parked in my stomach. Bleh. My guess is that the virus is so good at stopping digestion that it takes a while for traffic to pick up again.

I am going to try taking probiotics to restore my gut flora. Other than that, I'm going to nibble bland foods but mostly go with electrolyte drinks, water, and diluted fruit juice until my body remembers how to get things moving again. The main thing: stay hydrated!

I had exact same thing about a year ago and had a bunch of tests done but to no avail. Doc said the flu bug can sometimes make a portion of the intestines like fall asleep or quit working after a bad flu. Essentially, the food u eat keeps backing up since the intestine isn't doing its job and contracting the food through. The pressure keeps building up the more food you consume each day. I had to drink an over the counter purple medicine that was suppose to make you poop, plus, do an enema or two to get things going from the end. It worked...and my intestines have worked fine ever since.
