I would like to know if this problem (bright streaks of blood in stool) will correct itself and if so how long?

Any time you have blood in your stool or green stools, you should go to the emergency room. It may be rough stools scraping against the skin, causing it to bleed, but you want to make sure that everything is okay. Get yourself to the hospital.

If your stool is BRIGHT red, than that means that there is possibly a rupture or fissure near or on your colon. That can be caused by lack of fiber, stress, constipation (too much strain), bowel movements too large, or other caused that are too numerous to say. None of them are good, but 9 times out of 10, they're an easy fix. Either way, a trip to your doctor should be your next step.

As far as GREEN stools go, if it makes you feel better, you can ask the doctor about that as well, but ask yourself this first: Have you been eating/drinking anything that had a lot of blue food dye? Or just an excess of the color blue? A specific food coloring (Blue Dye No. 5) is used quite often in Kool-Aid, Blue Hawaiian Punch, or "Grape"/purple sodas. Any excess of this food coloring/artificial dye is sometimes too much for the stomach to digest properly, so what doesn't get digested/absorbed is left untouched, which...you guessed it: is the green leftovers from the dye! How long it takes for your stool color to return to "normal" depends on how much of the food dye you intake. I drank a very dark blue Slushy from 7-11 and I had a neon green stool for days. A little "test" of this will most likely show a pattern.

Of course, if you're sure you're not digesting anything blue at all, well than get yourself over to the M.D.!
