I had my surgery 2 weeks ago and it wasn't all that bad. The pain used to keep me up at night because the pain meds prescribed didn't do much to numb the pain. The stool softeners gave me gas and I wasn't able to take my pain meds if I took the stool softeners. So I was off the meds by day 3. The pain was easing away by day 5. I was able to go back to school and work within a week. It could be because I am only 20 and heald faster than those older than me. I do have bloody stool still and it only occured during week 2. Hopefully it is nothing when i go to my follow up visit in two weeks. If I never needed a hemorroidectomy I would not get it, nor refer it to anyone. Urinating and passing a bowel movement was the most unpleaseant experience.

Well I had mine in January 2012 and it is now March and I still cannot have a BM without pain. I hurt for up to 1 hour thereafter. Even with the sitz baths, which are soothing, I have pain. I am going to call my physician in the am to see why I am still having pain. It seems like you all healed within 2-4 weeks. I hate going to the restroom for a bm, and SEX forget it, its not even an option at this point.

Hello there! I am writing in order to see how others recovery after hemorrhoidectomy went. I had my hemorrhoidectomy done 2 weeks ago and I still have pain while passing stool. There is also still bleeding and soreness while bm. What about any of you? How did it last for you to fully recover?

This site has kept me sane while I researched hemorrhoidectomy.  I always had soft bowel movements and after surgery they just got softer.  I am 4 days post op and on day 2 I had my first  bowel movement.  I basically just stood over the toilet and it dripped out of me.  Felt like there might be something else in there, pushed a little, but when it didn't come out I stopped because I didn't want to start that cycle all over again! Morning of day 4 started out with the same type of bowel movement but as the day went on it just kept coming out very slowly, not even enougth to sit on the toilet for.  I'm wondering if this could mean that there was a mistake on my doctor's part or if I need to lay off some of the stool softener because I had soft stools to begin with.  Kind of scared to try and push anything out, espsecially after the stories on here!

Hi

I had my surgery 48 hours ago. Last night I was in agony, my anus was swollen like I still had the hemorrhoids - this is normal I'm told. Oxy and paracetamol weren't helping with the burning sensation so by 2am I'd had enough and a nurse suggested an ice pack. It was the best relief, I've had 3 of them on rotation now for almost 24 hours and my pain has reduced considerably. I do have quite a bit of gas but I'm puting that down to all the fruit and veg I'm eating. Passing the gas is a little uncomfortable and I have spot bleeding all tge time. I had one small BM and it hurt but I had a quick was, slapped on some numbing cream (rectogesic) then back on with the trusty icepack.

I'm drinking about 5L of water a day so my stools will be soft, it's worth forcing that much water down. Another good natural way to get a soft bowel movement, drink a cup of prune juice.

I've been up walking around the hospital and doing things do I'm hoping my recovery only gets better and better from here. Good luck to anyone else out there who is going through it. And just remember, if you expect a lot of pain and focus on that then that's what will happen. Positive thoughts :)

Hey AmandaD

The "other thing" you can feel in there is an internal dressing. If you don't pass it, it will eventually dissolve. You may need to push a tiny bit to get the dressing out because it sounds like its blocking you from having a decent BM

Hello all and I hope your all feeling better. I had my surgery 3 days ago and am still in agony! I was in a very bad dirt bike accident as a teenager wich resulted in a 2 week coma along with over 300 stitches in my head and face, broken ribs, broken collar bone and a ruptured ear drum. I'd gladly go through that again to avoid this PAIN!!! I had 3 very large internal and 4 external hemorroids removed as well as a colonoscopy and a small section of intestine removed for biopsy on Tuesday morning. This is the worst pain I have ever experienced or imagined! Because of the colonoscopy on top of the surgery I ended up with a lot of air trapped inside me. Wich is causing uncontrollable spasms in my rectum. The pain meds " when I can keep them down" don't even touch the spasms. I still haven't had a BM yet wich I am very worried about. From what I've read the first few BM's are pure hell ! I'm not sure if I would have gone thru with this of I knew beforehand about the level of pain involved or the lengthy recovery time. But it's too late now! I'm kinda commited at this point. Lol Anyway I'm rambleing... Excuse me. I have found that a hot pad applied to the rectum and another on the stomach helps the spasms a lot. Hopefully this helps some of you. I will gladly accept any advise out there as well. I wish you all the best of luck and happy healing!

I have had my surgery approx. 3 weeks ago.  Now my problem is after bm, I can't seem to wipe that area clean.  I tried sitz baths, wipes, etc.  But after bm I wipe and wipe and wipe, think I am clean and then go to uritnate and when I wipe, I still have a messy area in the anus area, also lots of itching.  I thought I went through this surgery for that very reason.  Has anyone had this issue and did you have any strategies to correct this?

Its been 3 days after my hemorroid surgery and had first bowel movement this afternoon it wasnt that bad. Yes it hurts but it was not like you gonna die. After yes your butt feels like its on fire but I put some ice pack and felt much better within 1/2 hour. I was really scared because surgeon had said I had some packing in rectum that they leave in there so I was scared but I am happy its over. Do believe that better days are coming. Keep praying and taking pain killers and stool softeners to help you out

Hi everyone, I'm writing because I'm stressing, a lot. I had my surgery for what I'm assuming was just two external hems. Don't really know because my doctor left right after my surgery and I was told I'll receive the details at my check up in 2 weeks. Day 1 was a breeze, took a pain pill and went to sleep. Day 2 not so bad, just a strange tight feeling in my anus all day. Day 3..... I've never actually wished to not exist on this earth more than anything in the entire world..... I cannot stress enough how important stool softeners, mineral oil, and a soft diet are prior to surgery. At least 3 days of this and you could have an unbelievable recovery. Had I been informed of this, I probably would've been 1 of the few who got through this horrifying surgery with little to no pain. However, not doing any of thisead me to Day 3 being a was between pushing like I'm trying to get an elephant through a doorway or metally deteriorating over the fact that I could feel immense pressure on my lower body from needing to have a BM. So Day 3 ended with me being pretty positive I have a new external hem, god only knows what's going on inside.... I'm doing fine I suppose you could say, but why I'm writing is to not only vent, and share my experience, but to get some advice or at least some relief from someone who's experienced what I've wrote about so far. My main concern is the fact that now that I've been taking Colace, Metamucil, Mineral Oil, Probiotics (Curelle), and eating very fiber enriched foods and a relatively soft diet, I'm having a BM at least 3x a day and always feel like there's more right there ready to come out but can't seem to push it out unless I strain ridiculously. It's really taking a mental toll on me. Also the muscle between my two private parts feel very tense and is protruding slightly enough to where I can feel it being tensed up. Is there any way to release that, I'm positive it's from my first BM pushing, but now it's so uncomfortable to the point that I can't tell if it's my next BM or just the constant tenseness of that muscle I aggravated. Any advice or tips or experience pertaining to my post would be very much appreciated. Thank you.

I had my surgery a week ago. I dealt with internal hemmoroids that would become external upon BM and had to be put back in. This went on for about 2 years until it got to the point of sometimes not being able to get them back in. I had 3 removed one having a fissure. Yes I do agree with everyone that the initial pain is excruciating!!! To the point of almost regret. But after day 3 and having my first BM that I of course held my breath throughout. Then day by day it got better and a week later I am back at work. A little buttox discomfort but BMs are bearable now. Baby wipes have become my BF. I preferred to take anti inflammatories instead of prescribed pain meds. Because I didn't feel it was pain. It feel like it's more "fire in the hole." Good luck to anyone going through this aggravation.

Hi everyone, and happy 4th of July!  I had my hemorrhoidectomy, shpincterotomy surgery coming up here on 72 hours ago.  I almost canceled the procerdure because of finding this site and reading all the horror stories on here, and my surgeons dire warninings about the pain.  He told me he rarely does this procedure anymore because it's so painful, and he's tired of patients calling him in the middle of the night saying, "Doctor, it hurts."  He said, "I'm telling you right now it's going to be very painful and hurt like nothing else, I just want you to know that up front".  He told me to plan on a 5 week recovery time.  My quality of life was suffering because of the Roids and the leaking.  I never knew when I was going to bleed out from them. Mine didn't cause me pain like some others have experienced.  I'm a younger guy and it was making me change my life in all sorts of ways.  I told my Doctor that I just wanted to get my life back, and I was ready to bite the bullet and deal with the pain.  Side note, I am an Alaskan and I get hurt badly from time to time.  I've had to suture myself, climb down a mountain with a bone poking out my arm and quite a few other crazy things.  My pain tolerance may just be high. Not sure if it's that this time, or the drugs I'm on. I don't want to stop them to find out.

I don't want to jinx it, but I have not had the extreme pain that others have had, at least not yet.  I take a Vicodin every three hours, setting alarms throughout the day and night so I don't skip a dose, plus 1 Aleve every 12 hours. Soteners and lots of fiber. Ice packs, heating pad rotation.  So far so good. I was actually thinking of going to the 4th of July Parade today because I feel good, but declined as I know my body needs time to rest and heal.

I have to deal with this alone for the most part. The only one here with me is my dog, and though he's a comfort, he's still a dog.  My good friend pops in to walk the dog, get me items I may need from the pharmacy, store, etc.  I don't have a bathtub, but the shower wand is great. Plus I made an Alaska style spitz bath, lol.  I think I may be walking around my place too much this soon, but it's either that or lay down.  I am very active and get edgy sitting still for long.  I have to make myself take it easy, hard when you are feeling ok.

My concern is that I have not had a bowel movement as of yet.  Urinate just fine, had to start that to get out of hospital.  Yesterday I was so bloated, I almost looked pregnant, realized later that night that it was built up gas. It finally released and has been coming out with no pain, just the weird sensation that it's not gas coming out.

We did a Fleet ennema at the hospital right before surgery, I ate super light the day prior and day of.  Doctor said it might be a few days before I have a BM, but at what point should I worry.  I don't want to get impacted/ constipated.  I know the Vicodin will, but am doing all in my power to counter that.  Guess I'll find out soon enough. Just afraid to get back to eating at normal levels untill I have that first BM. I just have to get through the first one, and I'll know how my body is going to handle it and adjust accordingly.  I was so regular before the procedure you could set a watch by me, lol.

I went into this hoping for the best, preparing for the worst.  Things have been good to this point.  Though everytime I go to the Doctor from now on I will automatically assume the postion.  I left all modestey behind these past few weeks if you get my drift.  I have my first follow up appointment on the 16th.  I'll update if any major changes before then.

Dan
