Hello, all I had my surgery yester July 4th 2014 what a day to have this done.  I had significant pain prior to surgery and am about to take a 2 week road trip in a truck.  Seriously I should have read the posts prior to going to the urgent care, however I am leaving in 2 days so here is my experience.  I had the surgery in the urgent care 7/4/14.  The doctor gave me a total of 6 tablets of norco, the insurance company actually had the pharmacy call the doctor and ask for more pain medication for me as they said this was not enough.  Can you believe the insurance company actually wanted MORE for the patient.  Well the doctor refused said 6 tablets were enough.  Here is what I am doing.  I have Aleve, Norco for the 1 st day (good thing I am medication sensitive as I took a total of 2 yesterday, on my initial day of surgery)some Anucort HC suppositories twice daily (not sure if they are helping as my hemorrd was/is external, but will not stop using just in case they are helping)  The doctor told me to get some Dibucaine OTC to help (no pharmacy here in Texas knows what this is)  However I found a miracle at Walgreens it is called RectiCare 5% lidocaine Anorectal Cream, and this is over the counter.  It cost $33 plus tax, and worth every penny.  I have used it every 4 hours, while awake and my significant pain has not been back, but I put it on when I am starting to get real uncomfortable, It works quickly.  I had my first BM today, so for those of you who have not had a BM or a comfortable one spend the cash on something like this, it works wayyyyy better than the HC stuff.  I need to work today and tomorrow then start on a road trip for 2 weeks.  I will look fopr another tube of this stuff before I go as there was only 1 tube on the shelf at the store, so call before you go to the pharmacy.  A couple pharmacies told me the lidocaine was by prescription only.  That is not true, I have a tube I bought so keep looking.  Good luck I will post again as I recover and update on any findings that might help others.

Update.

So after I posted last night I decided to treat myself with a beer.  It wasn't the smartest thing to do, taking Vicodin and all, but I figured it's just one and it was the 4th and all.  I was stuck at home alone and rather bored.  Well I think it helped relax me because I was able to have my first BM since the surgery.  It was soft and just kind of came on it's own as I stood over the toilet.  There was a small amount of blood on it. It did sting as it passed over my incisions, but hopped in the shower afterwards, got to love the shower wand, got cleaned up and had hope that things were going to keep being alright.  The discomfort was more than manageable.

This morning the urge strikes again, pretty much a repeat of the first minus any blood.  I just felt like there was more but did not want to strain at all, so cleaned up and went about my day.

Later that day, about 12:30, I got a really uncomfortable feeling, wasn't sure what it was and decided I just over did myself this morning walking around.  Decided to take a nap, well that wasn't working.  Went in the John to pee and that's when I felt it coming.  OMG, I had the biggest, hardest BM of my life.  It hurt but still wasn't close to a 5 on the pain scale, I'd call it a 3 1/2.  They kept coming one after the next until the toilet was filled.  My biggest shock was that there was zero blood.  After I got cleaned up in the shower I felt the best that I have since my surgery. My bowels felt empty. I did learn that I need to up the amount of softeners or cut back on my Vicodin.  If they weren't so hard, the pain would have been much less. Before the surgery a BM like that would have caused tremendous blood loss, now none. That alone makes this all worth it for me.

At least I have a reference point now.  I don't fear it, because it's not unknown anymore.  I know I can get through all of this.

I feel terrible for all the people that have had extreme pain recovering from this procedure.  I was expecting it myself, in fact I keep waiting for it, but it hasn't come.  I am going to force myself to rest as much as possible the next few days, because I know my body needs it.  In fact the pain may be there and the drugs might just really work for me.  I'm not quite ready to cut back on them as this has been rather smooth sailing and I don't want to Jank with the formula that is working for me.  I know it is still early in the game and things can change, but I am very optimistic about it all now.

My best wishes to everyone out there that is, has or will have to have this operation.  It's nice to have support as these can be difficult issues to discuss.  In fact that's why I waited so long to do anything about my symptoms, I was embarrassed.  Silly looking back.  Well wish me luck with day 4 and moving forward.

Dan

Update 2.

I can't believe I'm 12 days post-op and feeling great.  I stopped my pain meds 3 days ago, just take an Aleve twice a day now.  I guess my recovery has not been typical, compared to other posters.  I have started driving again, though I limit it.  I guess the worst part for me has been all the down time.  When you feel good it is hard to limit your activitys.

I have had one small issue.  The spot where I had my IV.  Hurts, tender to the touch.  I noticed it when I came off the pain meds.  There is a small bump where the needle went in.  No redness, discoloration or bruising.  I talked to my surgeons office today and since I have a follow up in 48 hours we are going to wait and check it out then.  Weird that my arm hurts more than my bum.

All my plumbing is working normaly.  Just slight discharge, which gets better everyday.  I haven't looked at the "site" yet.  I'll leave that for the doctor on Wednesday.  Just don't want to see something weird and freak out, lol.

All in all, I'd say  this was a possitive experience.  Surgery is never fun, but the beneifits definately outweigh the cons.  I over-hyped this whole thing in my head, but it wasn't bad.  I'd do it again if I needed to, in a heartbeat.  I just never had the pain that some people have endured with this.  I'm so glad that has been the case with me.

I can't wait to ride my ATV again, go hiking or climb a random mountain, just need my doc's o.k. first.

Good luck everyone.  Just remember it's not necessarily as bad as some of these posts make it sound.  Everyone is different, just be strong, have a good Doctor and maybe you will have a story like my own, almost pain free.

Hello! I had my hemorrhoidectomy last week tuesday (september 16). I had a hard time when having a BM, I felt so much pain. There's blood came out after I poop yesterday. I cried a lot and felt almost dying. I'm scared to have BM. The doctor gave special instructions after I will discharge that 3 days soft diet, Lactulose before bedtime for 5 days, antibiotics for 4 days, pain killer if needed and follow-up check-up after 2weeks. Still I felt uneasy/uncomfortable and you know having BM.

I've noticed people talking about the pain of clenching muscles and I lucked into an answer - zanaflex, a muscle relaxer. I take it only twice a day and it is the answer to prayer! I can take the other little aches and pains from the hemmoriodectomy but once those muscles decide to clench, it is hell on earth! I hope this helps.

Hello to everyone, I am a 47 year old male. I had a Hemorrhoidectomy in April of 2012. I had a total of six hemorrhoids removed, two small internal and four external. Two of the external ones were about the size of a golf ball. Before the surgery the surgeon said that the surgery could go three ways, successful, restricted bowel movements, or uncontrollable of the bowel. He said that in 95% of the surgeries all works out just fine but that there is always a chance that something could happen when working around the rectum area. I was feeling fine and was released to go back to work after about six weeks. I was still having pain with BMs but that was it. Then one night I had to do a lot of lifting for about three hours and the next day I could hardly walk. I started having spasms so bad I was ready to die. I went back to the surgeon and he put me on Valium, muscle relaxers, and hydro's and took me off work for the next two months. I last visit I had with him was in September of 2012 and he said there was nothing else he could do. He sent me to therapy and pain management. Since then I have had 24 weeks of pelvic floor therapy, five caudal nerve blocks and one pudendal nerve block. Nothing has helped. I am now on Morphine 3 x a day, Flexeril (muscle relaxer) 3 x a day and Hydro's 4 times a day. The nerve blocks helped for about one week and now because of them I have tail bone pain that will not allow me to sit straight in a chair. I have a lot of pain when I go to stand from a sitting position. When I have a BM I am in the bed for a few hours after because of the pain and I even take fiber and stool softeners so my stool is not hard. I can't drive because I cannot sit straight in the sit and because of the meds. I cannot wear any pants that have a hard seam because I cannot stand for it to rub my tail bone. I have not been able to work since July of 2012. The doctors have me on restrictions of can't stand very long, can't sit very long, can't walk far and can't lift more than ten pounds. The next step that the doctors think will help me to get back to some kind of normal life is to implant a spinal cord stimulator. I am waiting for the insurance to approve this next step. All I can say about this surgery is that, if you can live with the hemorrhoids then don't do it. If this is a surgery that you must have done, then give yourself plenty time to heal and don't go back to work until you are ready. I wish I had never had this surgery. Just keep in mind if you are thinking of having this surgery, most people never have problems afterward, but there is a chance that if you get this surgery done something could go wrong and really mess you up. Even the smallest mishap can be big with this surgery because every time you lift something, stand up, sit up. squat down almost every thing you do puts some pressure to the rectal area. Good luck and I hope your surgery has a better out come than mine.

I'm considering having Hemorrhoidectomy for years now I have had Hemorroids in the last 5 years the have gotten worse. I have pain and one sticks out after having a BM. It goes back in after awhile but just feels weird because I can feel it. I met with a surgon she said I have 3 large internal ones and some externals. It would take me about 2-3 weeks to recover. After reading some of the story's here I'm not sure I want to do this now. I can't belive how one  person here has ended up with a perminient disablity from this surgery.

1/24/2015: had hemorroidectomy 1/16, so roughly 7.5 days ago, and have been mostly bedridden dealing with it. I have taken the full cycle of anti biotics, am taking colace twice daily, and continue taking 1-2 hydrocodones daily in anticipation of bowel movements. Didn't have bm until day 3 which was a slow dribbling accompanied by an intense burning that lasted for over an hour after the incident transpired. Needless to say, I wasn't worried about having the pain meds constipate me, as avoiding a bowel Movement sounded like a better alternative. The only problem with remaining constipated is that I makes me feel sick and extremely nauseous, almost as though the food I've already digested backs up to my esophagus, and all over I just feel ill. The pain I would say has been as high as 8 or 9 during bm, and stays around a dull ache 3-4 most of the time. However, if this surgery yields me the results of no pain rectally, post recovery if course, no more pushing internals back up in me, no pain or burning or itching, and spares me the embarrassment (I'm gay) then, it will have been a major success. The one thing that really pissed me off was when my dr wheeled me into surgery at 9 AM asked me if I had done an enima, and I told him no, he looked at me and seemed to be holding me responsible for his office not telling me I needed to have done one prior to the procedure. This resulted in an excruciating five enemas prior to having the surgery as he wanted to make sure that everything came out completely clear. Later, I found out that that was actually misguided and that he only wanted me to do one and it wasn't important in the end of the liquid came out clear or not. So anyway, back to work in a couple days, wish me luck, happy healing to you all! Also, did anyone else have what looks like open holes where previous hemorroids had been? I have what look like two open wounds around the periphery of my actual anus :-/

I haven't had a BM yet and its day three, I'm so scared after reading all these storys. I'm a mom of a 2 month old and a 2 year old. So far the pain hasn't been too bad for me but I've been taking the Norco pain meds, hope they aren't making me constipated. They also have me taking Mineral Oil, Milk of Magesia and Miralax and still no BM. :((
