My son was born with one lung and his heart on the right side. He also was born with 3 ribs and 2 vertabrae not developed which caused his spine to curve. It started when he was born to curve at 20 degrees but up until his surgery it was curved 55 degrees. It was causing pressure to his only lung and heart. He just recently had surgery on his spine which they put a rod in his back. He is doing wonderful and has no complications. He gets short of breath sometimes due to his lung condition but overall he is doing well. He is 16 years old now and pretty much can do anything like anyone else. The doctors were a bit concern about him having surgery because of his heart and lung problems but he came out it of with no problems. I would love to get in contact with others who have the same health issues.

The condition of having the heart on the rights side is called "dextrocardia".

Hi,
I know you wrote this over a year ago but if you do happen to get this then I'm intrigued about your skydive.
I've wanted to skydive since as far back as I could remember and had the opportunity a few years ago. - But when I asked my doctor she was adamant it was dangerous. I asked another doctor and he said the same thing. I asked my specialist she said the same thing and my GP Uncle also said the same thing. Sooooo did you Dive in the end? and if so how was it? What did your Doc say?

Also I've got my right lung and a hypoplastic cyst thing where my left should be. I'm quite sporty but do find it difficult to keep up sometimes.

Hi after my son was hospitalized at 7 days old, We discovered that he had a cyst on his right lungs. He end up having more that 1/2 of that lungs removed and might have to have the remainder removed. Nevertheless, he is doing great breathing on his on and eating. He is now 6 weeks. Dr says he is going to be fine and have a normal life

My daughter also has only one lung(missing the right lung)? Regarding your daughter, which lung is missing? Did she ever have surgery of any kind? What fills the void? What about her anatomy(back, shoulder, etc.)? My daughter cannot be that active so I'm wondering what the difference is.

Hi everyone, Two years have passed since my daughter was born. Of all the scenarios we were given of what we could potentially encounter at her birth, we were lucky that it was the best case scenario that we experienced. I gave birth naturally to a 6 pound 12 ounce girl who cried moments after being born. Tears of relief (for us)! They took her to intensive care to check her but after 16 hours was able to join me in my room and we left 2 days later. She sees a cardiologist who at her one year check up said he didn't need to see us for two more years. He thinks that if she were to develop pulmonary hypertension she would have already displayed signs of it and so feels confident that she won't develop it. She also sees a respirologist once a year who helps monitor her and looks for signs of scoliosis, which I don't believe we'll see until she is older. For her first two years she qualified to receive the RSV shot but am not yet sure if she needs it this year as well. When she was 7 months we flew across the country (Canada) with no issues. She is incredibly active, keeping up with her two older brothers playing chase, on the playground, swimming, you name it she is there. She sweats more than my others do but I'll take that over any other scenario we were given. Sometimes I stand and marvel at how fierce she is. She is strong and healthy and beautiful and loved. We were lucky, and I know that in those early pregnancy days after her prognosis, these sites helped me tremendously so I wanted to give an update on Lucía, our little light.

Hi - I was born with one lung, dextrocardia (sp?) and a narrowing of the trachea and I am now 42yrs old.  I haven't had any surgery and the narrowing of the trachea was only discovered about 8 yrs ago (when they had difficulty inserting a tube for anaesthetic).  I have had restrictions in the level of excercise I can do, but have lived a pretty normal life incl walking to school and work (just not running marathons!), though it does take me longer to recover from being out of breath, and going up hill is always harder.  I have travelled overseas and haven't had any issues - I haven't had kids (but was told I'd need to be monitored closely if I did).  I did develop PAH about 3-4 years ago but am on medication which helps and am still working full time (just have quieter weekends).  It's been great reading these stories as I've never met or heard much about others who have the same condition.  For parents, my only recommendation would be to let your child live a normal life, but let them set the boundaries of what they can manage.  Encourage them to walk and do moderate excercise to keep their heart healthy (and if possible, give up smoking and encourage them not to smoke).  And get used to being the "star' attraction among doctors (!)

To heathykym88,

Am replying to an old post, so not sure if this will be useful - I also have a small thumb on the same side as the missing lung, it appears that the muscle around the base of the thumb is missing. It's never occurred to me that the two things could be connected so it's very interesting to hear your daughter has this too! I also have limited rotation in the elbow on that arm - is this the case with your daughter? Have you been given a medical explanation as to why the thumb is small? Thanks.

Hi everyone.. In my case, we just discovered that I was born with one lung when we saw my 1st xray when I was in college.. My parents and I were shocked when we saw my 1st xray showed only one lung... My parents didnt know that im living with just 1 lung.. I live healthy and normal same as the other kids.. In fact, i was an anthlete when I was in primary and secondary school... My mother never had an ultrasound when she was pregnant.. The only problem was when I was 1 month old, i was in and out in the hospital and the doctor just said that my lungs are weak... And i just remember that i always have cold when i was a kid... Now, im 29 yrs old... With wife and daughter.. A structural engineer and still healthy and kicking... :)
