Just to try to help people feel better, I've been on Implanon since October 2010. I've had constant dark brown discharge ever since. The only way I can make it stop is if I take at least 800mg of Ibuprofen or Naproxen every day until it clears up, but it still ALWAYS comes back. The Ibuprofen/Naproxen isnt a good idea because they ARE Blood thinners. So unless I do that, I have had constant bleeding for the past 2 years. I'm extremely ready to get it taken out because it's beyond embarrassing.

hi, i dont think that that it is because you need to have it taken out, i have had mine 9 months and within the first three months i have been having the same problems.

Recently within the last month I have had dark brown discharge, the first time it happened it lasted for 4 days then the same thing happened 2 weeks later also for 4 days. It hasn't happened since then but yesterday it started again. I have taken multiple pregnancy tests over the past couple of weeks n all came back negative. It doesn't expire till august nxt year, so could this be effects of coming close to the expiry date? Should I be worried? Is this normal? Help!!??

I'm having the same problem, mines due to come out in March and I've had no periods since i had it put in but during the past couple of weeks ive been noticing dark brown discharge. Should i be worried? Should i get my implant taken out sooner rather than later? will the discharge go away on its own?

It's not pregnancy. I've had the discharge before too. Taken a pregnancy test because i was so paranoid. It's just the birth control messing with your estrogen levels.

Hi girls,
Just wanted to share my story:
I got my first 3 year implant in 2009 and had it replaced last June 2012 - so this is my second one.
The first one worried me like crazy! I spotted for a year and a half pretty much non-stop and think I only had about 3 periods. During that year and a half I only 'came on' when I was about to have sex which really sucked. I think it was something to due with changing hormones levels. I was determined to keep the implant, however, because it really is a very convenient method of birth control.
I had my second implant put in just under a year ago now, and have been spotting pretty much every day again, although sometimes there is no spotting and that's fab. What I mean by spotting is brown discharge - this is simply a mix between normal discharge and old blood - there are occasionally a few clots - but this is all normal. As I haven't had a set period in over 4 years, the body needs to find a way to adapt after ovulation.
As long as there is no smell or extreme discomfort there is usually nothing to worry about. Sometimes it feels more comfortable to wear tampons as opposed to a pad, but in many cases a panty liner should be sufficient, and it will allow your lower bits to breathe and avoid a yeast infection. If you ever feel bothered by the discharge, I would recommend eating more yoghurt, drink lots of water and wash your intimate bits with a neutral PH shower gel (vagisil do one I think).
It's all normal, usually nothing to worry about - your body just has to get used to a huge hormone change!

I would regularly get a brown-y discharge after a regular period before implanon so I'm sure it's nothing to worry about, it will be your body removing excess mucus and tiny amounts of blood (hence the brown colour) Blood contains Iron, which is a metal, and the iron has various oxidation states, and dependent on the state of oxidation depends on the colour, and one of the colours of Iron is brown- think of Rust on the garden gate or the old ash bucket outside your grandparents' house, the brown discharge is perfectly normal, panic not, and if you still worry, see your GP or Nurse Practitioner if you want further reassurance

I had the implanon inserted back in June last year (just under 1 year ago), I have never had any sign of period since I had it inserted, not even spotting, but last week I had a period that ranged from very dark red blood to brown spotting, it only lasted about 3 days. Is this normal?

Hello All!
Ive never actually been in one of these forums, so excuse my awkwardness :p
I got the Implanon Decemeber 2012. It's now almost March 2013, and I'm getting mine taken out. Not only do I have brown, stringy periods, I have them about twice a month. Other side effects include: Fatigue, Mood Swings, achy body. I'm always tired. I work with kids, and lately I've been very easily irritated with them, and its totally not me, because I love my job. I get a proper 9 hour of sleep, maybe even more, because I'm just so exhausted all the time, that I pass out at 8:30 pm, when normally, I sleep at 9:30 or 10.
Im not bashing the implanon, but it most definitely isn't for everyone. With my friends, it stopped their periods completely. With me, it gave me an extra period a month, and its not even a normal period.
But my question is, Is the Brown stringy period normal on Implananon? of course, I googled, and loads of pages suggested its "implantation bleeding" but how could I be pregnant on Implananon? I know its possible, but highly unlikely.
