I've had BMS for twenty years. It keeps me from sleeping at night, which is when it's the worst. I awake pain free, but it begins mid-morning, progressing to torture by night. My only relief is Valium to sleep. Many medications make it excruciating, mostly anti depressants. I was started on Welbutrin, and with the very first pill, my tongue was in a staple gun. My only relief has been from ice. A few years ago I began taking Alpha Lipoic Acid, and that does seem to help some. I do wonder if having had X Ray treatments for
exzema many years ago is the cause. I had it around my mouth, and a quack dermatologist gave me many treatments in my early 30's.
I'm now 70, and a compounding pharmacist recently recommended progesterone cream 6 times a day for my migraines, and that I get off the tiny dose of estrogen I had been taking for hot flashes. My BMS seems to be much better!

I have had BMS for 18 months and have been treated with gabapentin which works brilliantly for a couple of months and then it's as though I'm taking nothing and it reverts right back to not bad in the morning and excrucuating by evening. I have had to give up my job as Headteacher as can not predict how I am going to be. Then a few weeks of hell and gabapentin works againj or does BMS go away for a short time. I just do not know. Fruit, mint, onions and garlic are huge triggers and my eating habits have become really boring. Everyone out there with BMS - why doesn't anyone know how to help us?

My mother is 65 and has burning mouth syndrome. Her case is severe and very painful. Not sure what the cause is but she is taking Klonopin for it. I recently discovered a mouth rinse at Walgreens that she says actually works in giving her some immediate relief. It's called: G-U-M Rincinol P.R.N. Mouth Sore Rinse. Not all Walgreens has it, so you have to go online to check for availability. Here's the link: ***edited by moderator*** web addresses not allowed. Hope it helps everyone else too. Good luck!

I have had it for six weeks now and it is horrible. Chewing gum helped for a bit but it made my jaws ache so much that I had to stop. I will be seeing my doctor/dentish soon but in the meantime I suck on a small stone when I am not eating. This gives some relief. I am 66 years of age and I think it is a complication of vulvodynia in my case.

Hi June. I have been suffering from this hellish problem for 4 years. It comes and goes, but when it comes it lasts a long time. It waxes and wanes, goes away for a couple of weeks and then is back with a vengence. I have sores in my mouth sometimes, but they are small and hard to see. The tip of my tongue burns like hell and sometimes I just cry. I know how you feel. No one seems to care and the only thing I've tried that works is magic mouthwash with lidocaine. My came 4 yrs after breast implants, but also, my effin husband came home with herpes so who knows. Doesn't look like herpes and no sores on the lips. Do you have other symptoms because I feel this burning in all mucous membranes....it's horrible. Hang in there honey.

I have had this burning mouth thing off and on for about a year. I started having it after I had shingles on my face. I told my Dr. but she did not believe me. Now doing more research on it I now don't feel alone. I was thinking it was all in my head. My tongue, roof of my mouth and sometimes my throat all burns and it gets worse when the day goes on.

Hey Janelle. I finally convinced my doc to put me on valtrex. I take 1000 while all this burning is going on, but will drop back to 500 for maintenance. Mine was on the downswing anyway, but I think it is helping me. I also take neurontin for post-herpetic pain, although I've NEVER seen an outbreak. If you've never taken it, Neurontin makes you feel really weird and groggy at first, but that goes away after a couple of weeks of taking it (at least for me). I ended up taking 3200 mg daily, which is the highest dose. Anything above that doesn't work because your receptors are saturated. Hope this helps, but try magic mouthwash - dentist or PCP can prescribe this. Also, yeast could do this to you. You would need to see a holistic doc if so because traditional medicine doesn't recognize the harmful effects of yeast..... There is research online which shows a woman had been suffering with this for a while and finally her dentist thought maybe yeast, gave her medicine and it worked. However, yeast is tricky, there are about 6 -10 different strains and what may work for one strain doesn't for another. However, if you've had shingles, it wouldn't surprise me that you may have post herpetic mouth burning. There are a lot of smart people in the medical community, but I don't understand why they think they know everything. If they did, we wouldn't have herpes at all! End of rant ;-) Anyway, hope this helps.

My BMS stated 1-year ago and at first I thought it was related to having my teeth cleaned, but the pain persisted. I went to my doctor, who sent me to an ENT doctor and had 2-scopes and was told she couldn't help me, she sent me to have an endoscopy and got a 30 page report with basically an excellent report, except that I had slight gerd and he put me on medicine, but sent me to an Infectious Disease Doctor, who tested me for everything, which all came out negative and he suggested I see an Oral Pathologist or Oral Surgeon. I finally (after 3-month) went to Columbia University Hospital and the doctor diagnosed me with BMS. She asked me about my life and if there was any stress in my life and my age and basically I fit the profile of a person with BMS. I'm 58 (on hormone theraphy), my husband had died a year before this started and I was transferred out of state with my job. she told me that it would eventually disappear (it could take years) and that it would not be life threatening, but unfortunately there was no cure. She suggested to take vitamins and reduce the stress in my life with yoga and exercise. My mouth is on fire every day and I chew gum (which at times help), but once I stop it gets worse. I drink water and ice cubes and the only relief I get is at night and in the morning, but as the day progresses it gets worse. My throat is on fire as well, and at times I think I need to start all over again, as I cannot believe I have BMS and that it has to be something more serious - cancer. I'm at a loss as to what to do and everyone thinks I'm a complainer and so basically I don't say anything about my mouth anymore. I'm taking 600 mg of Alpha liploic acid, B Complex, B-12 and Zinc, Mulip and Iron. I'm at a loss and I have resigned myself to living with this condition. If you have any suggestions, I am more than open to receive them. Barbara

Hi,
I'm 53 and have had BMS for 5 months now. I am on Climara Pro patch for hormones. It is comforting to find others with the same problems. I take many vitamins and have started Alpha Lipoic Acid, but not consistently. The only relief I have is from Clonazepam and Magic Mouth Wash with Lidocaine, but only temporary. I only take half pill of Clonazepam in the morning and half in the afternoon, but it makes me very sleepy. I am going to try Progesterone cream and brush my tongue with baking soda three times a day like this post suggest. Let's see if that helps.

Hi, I have been suffering with BMS for 9 months. First a little background. I discovered that I was Salicylate Intolerant 5 yrs ago. Look up sickfromsalicylates.com. I was able to get rid of migraines, asthma, arthritis, dry eyes, dizziness, nausea and foggy headedness by getting off salicylates as well as artificial colors, flavors, and preservatives. But this BMS really had me stumped. I tried eliminating fluoride, brushing teeth with baking soda, ice cream, corn syrup, baby oil as moisturizer, but none of these were the problem.
I already have a very limited diet since salicylates are in most fruit (except peeled yellow apples, pears, papaya and bananas), in most vegetables (except string beans, peas, lettuce, cabbage, brussels sprouts,) in tomato sauce, olive oil, cinnammon, oregano, pepprika, mints, almond, fluoride and many other things.
If you are already eating salicylates I would say to try to avoid them for awhile to see if the BMS gets better. Next I would say to avoid wheat for awhile and see if it gets better. Since I already avoid all that, I didnt know what was causing my BMS.
I eat a lot of cabbage, brussel sprouts and cauliflower since I can tolerate them. Recently I read that these cruciferous vegetables (including broccoli which I cant have) effect the mucous membranes. I tried cutting out cabbage for a week and my BMS seemed to subside a bit. Ate some today and my lips and mouth are burning. So if you eat a lot of broccoli or the other vegetables I mentioned, try avoiding them for awhile and see if it helps. If not, look into Salicylates Intolerance, which is responsible for so many symptoms.
Take care, Joan
