Although I haven't been diagnosed for it all the symptoms are the same as what I have Its very discomforting to know that most people have had this for more than one year. I've had it for about 4 days and I'm sick of it already and my family is sick of hearing about it. I also noticed that most of the people who have it are older than 30, I'm only 20 so whats going on? It really is sad to hear that there are so many people out there living with BMS day in and day out, thank you for sharing your stories! At first I thought it was the contraceptive pill that triggered it, as I was taking the hormone pills when I got it. But then I realised that I have been over stressed in the past month so thought that tthat was my trigger. I realy hope someone finds a cure, and I hope you all are rid of this ugly sydrome very soonXD.

I happened upon this forum after looking up the same oral symptoms you are all having sore mouth, tongue, throat (burning sensation) and what feels like a swelling of the throat, for approx. 3 days now. First time it's ever happened.

Age: 54, post meno, diabetic type 1, stressful separation from partner of 20 yrs! Prime candidate right?

as of tonight I will try the baking soda rinse, but have not seen the dr yet. Let's see how this works out for now. Will keep an eye on this thread. :) Thank you all!

Don't get discouraged. It can get better. I got this in mid-May. It drove me crazy! I was riding in the car trying to stick my tongue out the window to cool it! I started and stopped all my meds and lots of foods but nothing helped. I chewed gum and sucked on Edy's fruit pops to help the burning. It was no fun. Then in mid- July it went away. I still sometimes have strange reactions, like toothpaste burned my tongue like crazy yesterday, then last nite it was fine to use it. No explanation for any of it. I suspect it is some kind of neurological qwirk. Good luck and I hope it passes soon :). Kathy

I have had it since last October. Am 64 years old, post menopausal. Had gone off anti depressants the previous May,then had a lot of stress 6 months later and got this problem. I now am taking Viibryd ( an anti depressant) and also have neck issues from too much exercise. I am convinced it is one of the cranial nerves that goes down into the muscles in my neck which leads to the mouth. It definitely is improving with extensive physical therapy. And I don't stress out about it as much with the taking the Viibryd. It is a horrible condition and people who don't have it think we are crazy! I think it's caused by stress or something to do with the nerves that are around the mouth/neck area. I also have every

type of test that could possible be done and they are all negative.

I feel your misery. I've had bms since jan & I'm at my wits end. I've spent 2k @ the dentist thinking it was 1 tooth. I'm on xanaz & sythroid bcuz I had thyroid cancer in 04. I've been to ever specialist & just today was started on neurotin. I'm so hoping this goes away. I've had tons of blood work & today was tested for allergies to metal because I have a partial that I can't wear at all. So eating is a misery too. If I don't find some relief soon I'll probably be divorced before long & all I want to do is cry. I seen a post that someone said they found an answer & to read their blog but I can't find the blog. Just something else to increase my stress level. Help anyone??????

I don't have a blog and don't know how to do that but I would suggest finding an experienced physical therapist who knows about the mouth and the nerves that go to it. I have tried neuron tin and all it did was make me tired.mi find that when the BMW is really bad that the Biotin mouth rinse is ok. Also I will chew sugarless gum and suck on sugarless mints. It's amazing that no md's know about this and will subject us as patients through numerous tests to prove nothing. I think Dr. Oz should do a segment on this problem since it appears so many people suffer with bms!

Hi, I,m the person who wrote about having bad shoulder surgery. I found the information the person spoke of about the blog, it's a few posts back, his/her doctor said to brush the tongue with baking soda after every meal...if it was that easy, we wouldn't have this problem. Having said that, the baking soda does give some temporary relief. I have made two water bottles one with a tsp each of baking soda and salt. I leave one down in the kitchen and one up in my bathroom for ease of use and swish and spit several times a day. Once a week I make new bottles. I am also on neurontin just trying to find a beneficial dose that doesn't keep me exhausted. I do feel the testing is important or the doctors won't learn anything. Through all mine my neuologist found I have neuropathy, I failed all the tests for it. the problem is they are starting to "know" what it BMS but not how to fix it.

I replied once to you already but just wanted to give you one more quick note. You have been suffering with this just about as long as I have. It will be a year for me in November. Give the neurontin a chance it took my burning down from feeling like someone putting a lighted matchbook in there to a mild annoying tingle that was very livable. The trade off is being tired. My doctor and I are now trying to find a middle of the ground dose that will give me benefit without being so tired. Now about the stress. Over this past year, I have had nothing but, and BMS can be brought out by a traumatic event which is where I believe mine came from, then the stress that followed. If I have a stressfully day, the BMS flares up so bad. You and everyone reading this must find away to get your stress level down, if I manage to have a nice stress free day my BMS is doable the minute my stress goes up I know it, I can feel it in my mouth before my breathing changes or my heart rate changes or any other stress factor you may have. Start being aware of how you feel, I would be interested if you notice the same.

Yes, I absolutely feel that stress and something to do with it. That is why I am taking an anti anxiety pill as I was under much stress last year when the bms started. I do feel better taking the anti anxiety pills as it helps keep my reactions to stress down.

I have had BMS for over 15 years and sorry but you will all just have to learn to live with it.

There is NO cure and most of the doctors think you are some kink of nut job.

Actually, I am feeling better since my physical therapist has been working on the nerves that connect to my mouth. I am fortunate enough to have found this person who is so knowledgable about the nerve connection from my neck to my mouth.

RELIEF!!! I have suffered with Burning Mouth Syndrome for many, many years. I went to every doctor under the sun. Nobody knew squat about this problem and some thought I was a hypochondric and a few tried to load me with depressents. I finally found an oral mouth doctor, a former teacher at Johns Hopkins, Dr. James Sciubba, an oral pathology expert and researcher of this disease. He prescribed me Neurontin and Klonapin and it has decreased my symptoms by half. I can finally sleep. I am not symptom free. I still having some tingling and a bit of bad taste, but I am out of pain. He will continue to adjust my meds until I am symptom free. And there are a few other drugs that are usde to treat this if those dont work for you. As crazy as this sounds, if you rinse your mouth with water and a couple drops of Franks hot sauce a couple times a day, the burning goes away. I know it sounds counter intuitive, and it hurts like hell, but 15 minutes later, you will have relief. I promise.
