After I injured my knees and couldn't get help from the doctors, I started experiencing the same strange burning sensation you are all describing. Finally, I called my old doctor in Calif. & she told me burning was normally caused by stress. I know it's hard to believe, but it's true. It's a strange sort of anxiety/panic attack that your mind gets hooked into. I discovered I get it when I'm worried about a health issue and start thinking I might die from it. And it's worse if I've had sugar or sucralose, etc. Mostly I wake up with it in the night. Today I had to rethink what I was thinking before I went to sleep and I was worried that a little spot on my leg might be a blood clot and it might go to my heart, etc., etc. My friends say it's related to hormones and fear of dying and not feeling well, etc. It's very much attached to fear. Any pain I get now I think it's going to turn into arthritis or I'll die from my osteoporosis and at the least be crippled. So, it's just getting wired into our illness and our fears. It will take you awhile to believe it and talk yourself back out of it, but you will. Now I'm trying to figure out how to get myself out of the dying and disease mode and back into the land of the living. My friends and I also think it's made worse by watching our parents age and die, along with a lot of our friends, and knowing what's in store for us. So, if you are stressed and fearful and have minor pain or injuries, and then you start burning, I bet this is your problem. It's sad, though, as I know many of you probably won't believe me, but it's so true. Good luck!

I believe you will find research to support that niacin can cause this skin burning sensation. I have had it too, in recent months, when out walking. I've been taking Centrum chewable vitamin/minerals w/ 100%rda of niacin in it. I'm stopping it now and I'll see if it was the culprit.

I have also experienced this skin burning sensation which, in my case, lasted for a week. I was so stressed out that time from domestic problems plus a urinary tract infection which required me to take several trips to the bathroom during nighttime, thereby depriving me of quality sleep. After my infection was gone, I still couldn't sleep at night due to the burning sensation which was painful. It was a vicious cycle because my lack of sleep made the burning pain worse.
So I looked for ways of taking out the stress by making peace with the person who was giving me the headaches, having quality sleep during daytime when the burning sensation wasn't in its peak and finding food for my soul, which for me was going to mass.

I have had this burning skin since July. I've been on steroids. Nothing helps.I'm not on any meds now. Even my scalp hurts to brush my hair. My dr. said it was photo sensitive skin and to stay out of sunlight and florecent lights. Not much helping. It feels like a very very bad sunburn all the time. Please help if you can..

I can't believe I came across this because I have been suffering with these same symtoms for several years. The doctor tells me it is stress, but I can be standing still just daydreaming about something nice when an attach comes on. I feel like my body has been place in a hot tub or that I've got a bad sunburn. I can't stand to have clothes touch my body it hurts so bad. BUT when the feeling goes away, I get a rush of heat that goes up my body to the top of my heat and then a cold sweat comes over me. I have 2-3 attack a hour. It is a horrible feeling. When it started the feeling was in a small area around my bellybutton and now has increased to my legs and arms. Let me know if you find out anything.

I am 51 yrs old and also am experiencing burning skin. Feels like a sunburn. Started in the face and in the past 3 months has spread through out my body. To brush my hair feels like my scalp is burnt. My Dr. has no idea. He suggest allergies. I know its not. When I go to bed it goes away. As soon as I resume my day and become active or even just anxious the burning starts. It starts and stops through out the day. But in 3 months a day hasn't gone by that I don't burn. Some days its very hard to deal with.

We noticed this is in the past tense .... how did you get past the Fibromyalgia? Anyone else have experience with the burning sensation and fibromyalgia???
My friend has had the weird burning sensation that comes and goes but can get pretty bad ... like a sun-burn feeling all over ... sometimes seems to have flushing also, sometimes not ... she has some pain with touch also (fibromyalgia symptom???).

I have that same burning. It feels like a really bad burn. Mine comes and goes but when it comes, it is bad. I can't stand to be touched and I constantly look at wherever it hurts expecting to see something. It started last year. I just turned 36. I talked to my doctor about fibermyalgia because I was sure that was what it was. He said no way. He says I am too young which I did not know was a factor. He says it is caused from the muscle underneath. He says it stretches or pulls when I am stressed. He says this causes my body to react by responding to the area as if it was hurt. This he says causes the burning. I don't know! Half the time people get treated for necessaries so who knows what is the right answer. I know he says that there is nothing to give me for the horrible pain. Those patches for muscles do not work so who knows!

I have been diagnosed with fibromyalgia for 2 years. Just this week I have begun experiencing a bad "sunburn" feeling on my neck, chest and trunk only on my left side. I will be contacting my rheumatologist tomorrow. I pray there is a treatment. I keep looking for a sign of burns or maybe shingles. There is nothing visible.

A few days ago I woke up in the middle of the night with the sensation of my skin being sunburned. It lasted for about 30 minutes and eventually went away. My Doctor prescribed niacin and I think this is what caused this reaction.

Was doing a google on "burning skin" and it seems that I'm not the only one affected. I get small streaks and patches all over the body that last for about 1-3 days each. I've had them since I was a kid. Most of the time I have no burning areas, but sometimes they flare up. I've done some research and thinking...
It doesn't behave in any way like MS. Picture you have 10000 lamps that are mixed green, red and blue, with little white wires leading to them and now you cut off 100 of these wires at random. The chance that only red lamps will go out is of course extremely remote. In the same way, MS does not tend to cause the identical symptoms on different parts of the body. Besides, they would last longer typically.
Lyme, I don't know, in my case I've had them since I was small, and I've had tests so it's probably not that. Despite the fact that I've pulled out more ticks than I can count in my life.
There may be other conditions that lead to this, but again, I've had them for so long without any progression or any other serious troubles.
The hottest lead so far is a by-effect of anxiety, stemming from hyper-ventilation. Before you swear that you don't hyper-ventilate, check it. I didn't think I did either, but you don't really notice if you're breathing at double speed. So what I heard is that another thing that I get - small muscle twitches, fasciculations - can be caused by hyperventilation increasing the acidity of the blood. Fasciculations involve the tiny peripeheral fibres, they last for a couple of days and they are just about as localized, and they turn up in the same form now here and now there. So perhaps the burning areas are simply "sensory fasciculations"? The sensory equivalent to twitching... It would make sense.
These were some thoughts...
