Yes, you can use the end of a toothpick to keep the hole open. I never knew about this until today where my mom told me to use toothpicks to keep my piercing open. She says she has done this when she was younger. But the only thing is that she used a knife to scrape the toothpick to make it even thinner so you might want to be careful. If it hurts, make it thinner.

2 days ago, my mom had put a toothpick in my ear piercing. I had woke up and the toothpick isn’t there. Now i’m afraid that my ear swallowed it and it’s closing up. When i touch the part where my ear piercing at, it feels really hard and something solid there.
