Did you put it in a glass of water? I have a 24 oz. Tervis tumbler and I fill it with ice and put around 2-3 capfuls and then add water.

This explanation actually makes sense to me. Give the body acid and it won't make more of its own...

I don't have acid reflux real bad, I mixed apple cider vinegar and a little warm water the other night and it stopped the reflux quickly.

ACV has done wonders for me! I'm always recommending it to people who have issues with heartburn (they usually look at me like I'm crazy - haha)

I've spent the last year or so gathering information on why/how it works, and unfortunately there haven't been any scientific studies I've found to explain it. However, after reading so much, I've put together my own theory based on what others have shared:

The average American diet is richer and heavier than our bodies are naturally meant to process/digest, so our stomachs produce excess acid to break down the foods we put into it. If you know a little about heartburn, or if you've experienced it first hand, you know that the pain can be worse on an empty stomach. The reason is that your stomach is still full of this excess acid with no food to digest! From here you have a couple of options: you can take some meds from the pharmacy that will cause your stomach to produce less acid OR you can ingest some ACV, which indicates to your stomach that there is enough acid and it can stop producing more.

I'm not a doctor or scientist, but this explanation makes the most sense to me. If you want to contribute to this, or critique my theory please do! I would love to know more about how ACV helps with heartburn.

For those who are wondering, this is how I ingest it: I put about 1 Tablespoon in a cup with about 1/4 cup of water. Mix it up a bit, and then drink it as fast as I can, kind of like a shot (it's not the most pleasant thing to drink in my opinion!). Then I drink a big glass of water to get it all down, and out of my mouth/throat. The initial shock sometimes makes me feel like I'm going to throw up (especially when I take too much), but after a few minutes my heartburn is gone!

I don't mix my ACV into a big glass of water and drink it slowly, because the acid isn't great for our teeth/esophagus (though not as bad as stomach acid). Using a straw doesn't really help, as it still gets on your teeth. I just try to drink it fast.

I really hope this info helps someone who is thinking about trying this to help with heartburn! If you don't want to get heartburn to begin with, changing up your diet may be the way to go. I cut out animal products for 2 weeks (meat, milk, eggs, cheese, fish, etc.) and didn't have any stomach problems/acid the entire time.

My thought is that the excess acid is there because we are doing something to our bodies that they don't like. Maybe it's an intolerance to dairy, gluten, caffeine, alcohol, fried food, meat, etc. Do some research and you might find a solution that you never thought of before.

i've been diagnosed with GERD on the 1st week of February this year, it was the first time that i experienced gerd symptoms especially the heartburn thing, GP prescribed omerprazole for 2 weeks but of no avail then i went to a gastro doctor and he put me on a different brand of omeprazole for a month and a half but my symptoms did not totally improve, i still have bouts of heartburn every now and then and to make matters worse, a few days after stopping the omeprazole, upon doctor's recommendation,  i experienced severe chest pressure and severe belching. my gastro recommended endoscopy, he said he wants to look into the possibility of hiatal hernia since my symptoms did not improve with the omeprazole...i am desperate to look for alternative solution for my symptoms and thankfully i came across the acv thing...will be trying it early am tomorrow and hopefully will cure my symptoms and will not have to undergo that endoscopy thing.

The ACV has been a savior for me. I've been on it for 1 year now and can say my GERD symptoms have improved at least 95%. The doctors kept giving me pill after pill which made me worse (I felt like they were killing me!), and so I decided to treat myself. 1 tsp in a warm glass of water with a teaspoon of honey taken with meals has overwhelmingly made a difference. It's so sad that the Gastroenterologists won't even listen when I suggest to them that some of us older people simply don't produce enough acid in our stomachs anymore to digest food. They are all about their "studies in the American Journal..." My regular doctor said she would pass it along to a few of her patients though. Sometimes you need to have patience with it as it worked well in the beginning then I had a small set-back, but I doggedly kept going with it and am so very glad I did.

adding more acid to your stomach is the perfect solution (excluding modifying your diet). This is because your stomach begins to recognize that there is already acid in there to help combat the heavy foods, so it stops making as much acid on principle. Since you digest the vinegar, you don't experience reflux after eating.

I don't know who delegated u the person who tells us how to live our lives, u need to fall back and just stick to the program known as health forums. Which r here to help people to give and take advice. I don't think we need u telling people they need to change their eating habits, common sense says those persons most likely know what they need to do. Lastly, even without being an MD I know for a fact that everyone is different. Especially when discussing homeopathic remedies. Its a c**p shoot. That ends my rant, and THIS America is what really Grinds my gears O_o btw the apple cider vinegar, as well as white vinegar mixed with warm water in small doses about 3-4x daily(especially before bed)can absolutely help/cure gerd or acid reflux. Its not a guarantee but well worth a shot, I'd imagine it has to do with the reason behind your acid reflux, the severity and how your body processes the h2o+acv. Good luck and spread the good word, it's about time we pass on home remedies that are actually backed up by fact...not like the stuff my granny told me growing up lol spoon full of sugar under the tongue for hiccups?? All that got me was a standing appointment with my dentist O_o oh snap, FYI its important to dilute the vinegar because the acidity is horrendous for your tooth enamel. I have even heard of people receiving caustic burns in their throats.

logically no, but often the symptoms are from a lack of enough stomach acid and the resulting "rotting" of food sitting undigested in the stomach. I personally have terrible heart burn/reflux and have experienced great relief with taking ACV (Bragg's brand). I get immediate relief. I wasn't getting any relief anymore from omeprazole and switched to ACV. It requires frequent use but works better.

My wife some times  uses charcoal for upset stomach.

There were times that i have had reflux, and for me it was from certain foods, or food combinations that set it off.

if you regularly suffer form this i would suggest looking into this as it is not a good condition (a mate of mine lived on quick-ease for years and didnt think anything of it).

There is a book called FRIENDLY FOODS written by the doctors at the Prince Alfred hospital and if you chose to follow this diet for a time, i think you will experience some amazing benefits.

or you can google FAIL SAFE FOODS.

those finding relief with apple cider vinegar likely have low stomach acid syndrome pretty much like GERD - acid reflux dis.- symptoms. keep adding betaine HCl or vinegar before or during meals. things might get better.

Acid reflux is usually caused by low stomach acid. When the stomach acid is low the sphincter at the base of the oesophagus doesn't get a string enough signal to close during digestion causing stomach acid to escape and cause heartburn, acid reflux, etc. drinking mild acids in vinegar before/after meals corrects the problem somewhat and helps the sphincter function more normally. Massively reducing sugar and fructose consumption also helps.
