Hello, guys. Yesterday I was looking for my friend at his house and his mother told me he had hip fracture. I thought this was reserved for the older people. Can younger people suffer from hip fracture? What do you think? I would appreciate if someone could reply to me. Bye!

Hello. You are right. Hip fractures are more common for hip fractures. However, in some cases, they can appear with younger persons. They are usually linked to some medical conditions. Lack of vitamin D is one of them. Endocrine disorders like hyperthyroidism, rheumatoid and gastrointestinal disorders which interfere with calcium and vitamin D metabolism can be blamed for hip fractures with younger persons. Nutritional disorders can also be cause. Cystic fibrosis is also an option. Bad lifestyle like heroin consummation is also one of the risks. I hope I’ve helped.

Hallo,
You have to understand that hip fractures can occur at any age. The fact is that high trauma or injury to the hip might cause hip fractures to anybody. However elderly people are more prone to hip fractures because bones and joints get weaker as you get older. How old is your friend? Did you know if he had any injuries in past period? The severe injury can easily cause someone to have a hip fracture no matter how old are they. I think that he will be fine but he will need a good physical therapy in order to get rid of the problem. I hope this helped.
All the best to you,
Karen

Hi Tricia, I am 54 and I fell off a bicycle and broke my hip November 2018. I had surgery to fix my hip (ORIF surgery). I had to use a walker for 6 weeks with 50% weight limitation on that leg. I did home PT for 2 weeks while on the walker then went to Outpatient PT for 6 months starting in Jan 2019. I was in very good shape before this happened. I was spinning 3 to 4 times a week. I thought I would heal a lot faster because of this but I realize everyone is different. For me the healing has been steady, but slow. I saw the most results in the first 3 months then I continue to get better but at a slower pace. I hear that the soft tissue healing takes a long time. I no longer use a cane but my gait is still a little off which causes me a little bit of pain in my knee and back sometimes. It is very important to do your exercises and keep moving. I think I overdid it a little at first and had to pull back a bit but when I don't exercise I feel worse. I almost have my full range of motion but still have some issues like pulling my knee to chest, reaching down to the left side of my foot, etc. This has been difficult but I have always remained optimistic and just keep moving. I am still hopeful to get back to hiking and biking like I did before. I think some of my hesitations about going back to biking, etc. is fear of being reinjured. I am working on that too. My best wishes to you and your healing and if my experience can help you at all, let me know. Always try to stay positive as it can wear on you but you will keep getting better.
