I have had a yeast infection for over three months. I'm a registered nurse and I had been researching this. I asked my PCP to do a fungal culture to identify the species of candida . I knew before it came back it was glabrata. I had intense burning but no itching, I also had very little discharge. It was not like other yeast infections I had in the past that were cured by fluconazole or other azoles. I have basically had every azole drug there is in the past three months. Every time I went back to the Dr. they would send an affirm test to the lab to have it come back positive for candida . I have been receiving bladder instillations weekly for a few months for a flare up of intercystial cystitis. They would give me cipro before I received a bladder cocktail of Solu Medrol which is a corticosteroid . I have researched this and discovered that steroids can predispose you to glabrata and especially when they are used with fluroquinolones of which cipro is one. I did a lot of research and according to what I have read the medication that is most effective , and has a 90-100 % cure rate is flucytosine 1 g and amphotericin b ( 100mg) mixed in a jelly base used per vagina for 14 days.I It is supposed to be well tolerated and not have many side effects when administered this way. I was super frustrated because my PCP was not familiar with glabrata as well as the rest of the staff. In the research I've done, boric acid is usually the first choice because its cheaper, but it has a 60-70 % cure rate with a high reoccurrence rate. Nystatin is also used, but not found to be as effective, it seems to be recommended as a maintenance drug once you are cured. I have seen where flucytosine is used alone, but not recommended because of the high rate of resistance that can occur when the drug is used alone. . Also boric acid can cause burning and irritation, and it is not known how toxic it might become if used past the 14 days. I am frustrated because the Dr. had to do some research and said the CDC recommendation for the first line of treatment is boric acid. I had a hard time finding a local pharmacy that compounds boric acid , and they were unfamiliar with the compound of Amphotericin b, and flucytosine. My PCP's nurse told me that Amphotericin B is only given by IV ! This is not true! It is used for systemic blood borne infections and given by IV, but the medication is fairly toxic when given this way. It is usually a life threatening illness when glabrata is blood borne.I was frustrated they didn't know of this compound and know it could be given in jelly form . I am frustrated that so many are unfamiliar both with this drug and also with glabrata in general. I found one of the few pharmacies in town that can prepare the boric acid gel suppositories. I don't hold out a lot of hope for this treatment. I've had it so long, and tried everything at this point. I have an appointment at a university hospital that has a clinic that specializes in issues like this, but they cant see me until the end of March. I would be interested in hearing how other have done with boric acid. Thank you so much for any input you can give :)

Hi. Totally get what all of you are saying. Read on. My journey began from hysterectomy/salpingectomy then my non surgeon insisting I was discharged with a Foley catheter which led to Urinary Tract Infection. Don't take Bactrm start over with Cipro. Nobody listened when I said I had burning. They kept doing Urine Analysis coming back negative. Finally, someone did a wet mount to say yeast infection do Diflucan. Went back the next week and they did another wet mount and this time sent to culture. In the meantime, do more Diflucan. They wrote the script 4 times, seriously. Ladies, this can mess with your liver. Luckily, they did a liver panel to see where I was to re-write the scripts. Follow this (finally they could say Candida Glabrata and then ear infection/sinus infection and by the way no mention until Easter Sunday that my good and bad bacteria are out balance and also do probiotic. So that was antibiotics off and on February 23 through Easter Sunday. All from a Doctor who insisted I was discharged from hospital with a catheter. The latest is my surgeon wants me to do nothing including no Boric Acid due to inflammation for a "few weeks" but do lidocaine jelly for burn and probiotics - which I will say is not working to permanently cure the Candida Glabrata and from what I read on the internet is not the thing to do from possible escalation to really really bad things - DON'T try this at home I would say.

UK lady - do not feel bad about visiting the USA and not thinking to pick up the Boric Acid vaginal suppositories. I could not find them at local health food stores either pre-made or gel caps with Boric Acid to put together Here is my proven suggestion: Amazon. I truly hope they can ship to the U.K. for you and you get better soon. In the meantime, push to advocate for yourself it's your body after all and you that is living it everyday.

I am cured , its been 2 years and no sign of Glabrata , It was not easy, prescriptions did not work for me, i went homepathic all the way... Diet is a huge factor to beat this. ..I went Sugar free, yeast free, gluten free did over 1 month as yeast/glabrata grow off sugar etc...Google garlic tampon, garlic on a string inserted in vagina every 2 days, this was no fun, burned a little but worked as Garlic is a natural antibiotic, I took garlinase pills , 2pills at least 3 times a day, more if i remembered... I also drank diluted raw organic apple cider vinegar about 4 times a day, its about 1 tablespoon of vinegar with as much water as u want, this makes your body alkaline and yeast cannot live in Alkaline environment..on the days i did not used garlic tampon i did Kefir douche in the shower, its really easy empty out douche bottle and pour kefir in it. Squirt a few time in vagina as u shower,...I also took swigs of kefir through out the day regular kefir no sugar/flavor added its gross but u get used to it. ..I also took really good probiotics pills about 3 times a day, good probiotics are refrigerated in the vitamin store, it had over 5million active cultures.....I did this tiredlessly for over a month. ..and im glad i did, i was trying to conceive a baby when i contracted this after a trip to mexico, i took Cipro after getting Montezumas revenge ..i was determined to cure myself because glabrata can kill fetuses, Happy to report i did get pregnant a few months after and didn't have any problems during or after pregnancy ...Good luck this really does work!!!

Hi all I am in Ireland I have glabrata for nearly a year now..its pretty much now resistant to everything..the only thing I had some success with was boric acid which also took it from heavy growth to light but didn't kill it off. That was four months ago and I'm back to square one! I'm also on strict candida diet , taking natural antifungal etc while this helps its not enough..I may be able to source boric acid again which is next to impossible in Ireland.. If so can anyone advise the best way to use it..last time I did one every night for fourteen nights and did become very irritated and swollen which I don't care about if it worked..just wondering if I should try shorter bursts may be in conjunction with probiotics vaginally..and help would be great..I totally empathise with all who have this or had it..its a nightmare that keeps on giving! No help here from doctors as its so rare they don't understand what they are dealing with..to the point I've been told I may have to live with it if it doesn't resolve itself!!!

Hi, I just came across this post. I also have candida glabrata. I just finished 14 days of boric acid. Right now, the infection still feels like it is there. Just curious, were you able to cure this? If so, how?

I am trying this. Did you have any side effects? How did you know when the infection was actually gone. Sometimes mine is really bad and sometimes I almost feel normal. How long did you have it before you started this treatment?

The following is what finally worked for me.. I had a year long glabrata infection, after being misdiagnosed with a uti and given three weeksweeks antibiotics for anno infection I never had. I ended up with glabrata. It was resistant to all azoles, ended up in hospital for iv treatment which was unsuccessful.. tried boric acid that was compounded for me for 14 nights, it irritated me badly but took the growth from heavy to light.. after that I was left with the option of a referral to another country for treatment but that wasn't an option..so I tried the diet, natural antifungals, probiotics all the natural cures.. garlic, tea tree oil, coconut oil etc.. after three months growth still moderate to heavy..
You name it, I have tried it.. I was desperate. I got boric acid again..pure pharmaceutical grade boric acid powder and some 00 gelatin capsules.. I filled them up and inserted one a night for 14 nights..no irritation whatsoever. Next swab result it had gone again to light growth.. this is where most people and.doctors give up..but because I was out of options..I left it a week while waiting for results and went back in at it again for 14 nights.. next swab was very light growth.. but I had no normal flora in there at all..with my doctors approval who confirmed that I was not irritated or damaging myself, again I left it a couple of days, and went back in at it for the third time for 14 nights, in addition I was taking acidophilus but I also opened a capsule and every morning sprinkled one on a panty liner.. to help reestablish the good bacteria.. next swab totally clear and flora back to nearly normal... I am continuing with my diet but just not as severe , I will always take a good probiotic.. I am not a doctor and I did do this under a doctors supervision, but it is what worked for me..so if boric acid helped in any way, I feel its worth giving it another shot whilst adding good bacteria directly to the area.. bottom line is don't give up.. xx
